Borderlands 4 Review: Excellent Gunplay, Uneven Story, and a Tough PC Launch

Borderlands 4 delivers excellent gunplay, loot, movement, buildcrafting, and co-op, but its uneven story, repetitive activities, and demanding PC performance keep it from being an unqualified recommendation.

Borderlands 4 is worth playing if your priority is shooting, looting, build experimentation, and co-op—not if you are primarily looking for a great story. Its seamless version of Kairos, traversal tools, summonable vehicle, and four differentiated Vault Hunters make it the most mechanically ambitious mainline Borderlands game. However, the writing is uneven, the activity structure can feel familiar, and the PC version launched with serious performance problems that later updates have improved but not entirely erased.

The short version

Borderlands 4 is an easy recommendation for players who value gunplay, loot, movement, and co-op more than story. Gearbox has made the series’ core loop more flexible with a seamless version of Kairos, grappling, gliding, swimming, a summonable vehicle, and four Vault Hunters with more distinct build possibilities. Fighting is excellent, equipment experimentation is addictive, and co-op remains one of the best reasons to play.

The reservations are significant. The campaign is serviceable rather than memorable, the humor is still overused, activities can become checklist-like, and the PC launch was troubled by stutter, crashes, inconsistent frame rates, and unusually high hardware requirements. Updates have improved the technical situation, but they have not changed the basic buying advice: Borderlands 4 is strongest as a combat-and-buildcraft game, not as a story-driven RPG, and PC performance should be considered before purchase.

Verdict: Recommended with reservations.

  • Best for: Loot-shooter fans, build experimenters, and groups looking for a four-player co-op FPS.
  • Less suited to: Players who want a tightly written campaign, dislike repetition, or have a borderline gaming PC.
  • Best edition for most people: Standard Edition.

The game moves the series to Kairos, a hidden planet ruled by the authoritarian Timekeeper. You choose from four new Vault Hunters—Vex, Rafa, Harlowe, and Amon—and fight through regions controlled by competing factions while trying to challenge the planet’s ruling power. The setup is familiar Borderlands territory, but the structure around it is substantially different.

Earlier games often divided their campaigns into clearly separated zones, hubs, and loading transitions. Borderlands 4 instead presents a more seamless world in which a vehicle, fast travel, traversal abilities, side activities, and optional encounters connect the regions. It is still fundamentally a combat-focused game rather than a fully systemic open-world RPG, but the broader structure gives the loot loop more room to operate.

Kairos makes Borderlands feel less segmented

The move to a seamless world is the clearest structural improvement. Getting from one fight to the next is less interrupted, and the vehicle makes longer journeys less tedious. Grappling, gliding, and swimming also give movement more texture than simply running between quest markers. These systems matter because they make exploration feel like part of the game rather than a corridor between combat arenas.

That does not mean Kairos is an immersive simulation where every location can be approached in radically different ways. The map and objective structure still point you toward combat, collectibles, missions, and familiar activity types. Much of the world can feel like a polished set of destinations arranged around the loot-and-shoot loop. If you expect a free-form role-playing sandbox, the open-world shift may feel less transformative than the marketing suggests.

For the audience Borderlands is actually targeting, though, the structure works. A better-connected world reduces friction between activities, lets traversal abilities become part of your regular movement, and gives you more reasons to leave the critical path. The vehicle is particularly useful for making the world feel like a place you are crossing rather than a collection of disconnected levels.

Gunplay is still the main event

Borderlands 4’s strongest feature is its shooting. Weapons feel responsive, encounters are more mobile, and enemy variety gives the game enough texture to prevent every battle from becoming the same damage race. The series’ famous loot fountain is still here, but the appeal is not simply the size of the weapon catalogue. The better moments come from the way drops interact with abilities, skill trees, gear effects, and your preferred combat rhythm.

You can build around the weapons you enjoy, use abilities to change how you approach an encounter, and adjust your equipment as the game introduces new enemy types and combat situations. A gun is valuable not only because its damage number is higher, but because its behavior may complement a skill investment or encourage a different way of moving and attacking.

  • Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback

That creates the familiar Borderlands tension: a new drop can be exciting even when it is not an obvious upgrade. You are constantly asking whether a weapon fits your current build, whether a passive effect is worth sacrificing raw damage, and whether a change in equipment will make your character more fun to play. Borderlands 4 understands that the chase works best when every item is a possible experiment rather than just another inventory entry.

Four Vault Hunters give the replayability a stronger foundation

Vex, Rafa, Harlowe, and Amon are more than four cosmetic starting points. Their different approaches to combat and build development make the choice of character materially important. The skill trees and gear interactions encourage you to develop a preferred style rather than simply selecting a class and following one obvious route.

That differentiation benefits both solo play and co-op. In a single-player campaign, changing Vault Hunters can make familiar encounters feel different because your priorities, abilities, and equipment combinations change. In a group, different builds give players more opportunities to complement one another instead of four people independently applying damage.

It is not useful to declare one of the four objectively best without a specific, current build context. Balance changes, gear availability, player skill, and the demands of a particular activity all affect that judgment. The important review point is that Borderlands 4 gives players a better reason to learn multiple characters, and that makes the game’s long-term loot chase more convincing.

The campaign is more controlled than Borderlands 3, but not a writing renaissance

Borderlands 4’s tone is less exhausting than Borderlands 3’s most criticized moments. The game is not constantly reaching for the loudest possible joke, and some supporting characters and individual exchanges work well. That improvement is welcome.

However, the writing remains uneven. The Timekeeper functions as a clear source of conflict, but does not have the same magnetic presence as the series’ strongest villains. The regional structure can also feel predictable: enter a territory, deal with local problems, confront a lieutenant, and bring factions together against a larger threat. The campaign delivers the necessary momentum, but it rarely creates the kind of emotional investment that would make the story the reason to keep playing.

Constant quipping remains an issue even when the overall tone is better managed. The jokes sometimes land, but the frequency can dilute serious scenes and make character development feel less sincere. Borderlands 4 is at its best when you are actively shooting, moving, and refining a build. Its narrative is connective tissue for that experience rather than a story-driven renaissance.

  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver

That distinction matters when deciding whether to buy. Players who treat the campaign as a delivery system for new weapons and abilities will probably find the writing adequate. Players who need a compelling villain, strong emotional arcs, or consistently sharp dialogue may find the familiar Borderlands formula increasingly visible beneath the new setting.

Co-op is one of the strongest reasons to buy

Borderlands 4 supports online co-op for up to four players, cross-play across supported platforms, and split-screen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-play requires a SHiFT account, and console online multiplayer requires the relevant paid platform subscription.

The design suits groups unusually well. Players can bring different Vault Hunters, pursue different build ideas, share the excitement of useful drops, and approach encounters with complementary abilities. The game’s movement systems also make co-op travel less cumbersome than it could have been in a large world. When the shooting is working at its best, a coordinated group can turn a chaotic fight into a satisfying combination of mobility, ability timing, and equipment effects.

Split-screen is a particularly useful feature for players who want couch co-op, although the experience has also been subject to post-launch fixes. Gearbox’s updates have addressed split-screen bugs, readability, audio, reconnect behavior, and progression issues. That continuing support is positive, but it also reinforces the importance of keeping the game updated before judging its current state.

A March 2026 update added shared progression features that reduce the friction of experimenting with alternate Vault Hunters. Collectibles, activities, SDU points, and map progress can now carry across characters, including existing saves. This does not remove the need to level and equip another character, but it makes trying a second build less punishing and strengthens the case for repeat playthroughs.

PC performance: improved, but still a buying consideration

Borderlands 4 should not be described as a universally successful PC release. At launch, players and reviewers reported stutter, crashes, low or inconsistent frame rates, and demanding performance requirements. Those complaints were substantial enough to affect the game’s overall reception, especially for players whose systems were below the recommended target.

Official updates have addressed GPU crashes, rendering, Lumen lighting, UI performance, stability, split-screen behavior, and other technical problems. The December 2025 update reported frame-rate improvements of approximately 9% to 20% on systems matching the minimum and recommended specifications. Those are official reported gains, not independent benchmarks, and they should not be read as a promise of a particular frame rate on every computer.

The fairest current assessment is that the PC experience improved materially, but the requirements remain high and performance is still platform-specific. A patch can reduce a class of crashes or improve rendering without eliminating shader stutter, driver conflicts, CPU limits, or problems caused by a particular graphics setting.

Official PC targets

2K’s official requirements target the following:

Target Resolution and frame-rate goal Memory and storage Processor and graphics target
Minimum 1080p at 30 FPS on Low settings 16 GB RAM and a 100 GB SSD An eight-core processor and an RTX 2070, RX 5700 XT, or Arc A580-class GPU with 8 GB VRAM
Recommended 1440p at 60 FPS on Medium settings 32 GB RAM and a 100 GB SSD An eight-core i7-12700, Ryzen 7 5800X-class processor and an RTX 3080, RX 6800 XT, or Arc B580-class GPU with at least 12 GB VRAM

These are targets, not guarantees. The minimum specification is already above what many older gaming PCs can comfortably provide, and the recommended specification is demanding for a game that targets Medium settings at 1440p rather than maximum quality.

Before buying on PC, check the complete official requirements, update your graphics driver, leave room for the 100 GB installation, and make sure the game is installed on an SSD. If your computer is close to the minimum, a console version may be the less frustrating choice, particularly if you want split-screen. That is not a universal claim that consoles perform better; it is practical advice for avoiding a troubleshooting-heavy purchase when your PC has little headroom.

Endgame and post-launch content

Borderlands 4’s long-term value depends partly on how much you enjoy repeating the combat loop. The announced post-launch roadmap includes Bounty Packs, Story Packs, additional Vault Hunters, endgame content, Invincible Bosses, and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode levels. Free updates have also added or refined events, balance, progression, split-screen, and quality-of-life features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first Story Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is paid post-launch content. It is included with the Super Deluxe Edition and the Vault Hunter Pack. This makes the edition decision more complicated than simply choosing the game with the largest bundle: the value depends on whether you expect to keep playing after the campaign and whether you actually want the announced expansions.

The Bounty Packs are more relevant to players who enjoy repeatable activities and continued gear chasing. Story Packs and additional Vault Hunters are more substantial reasons for dedicated fans to invest in the larger package. Casual players should not assume that every post-launch item is necessary to understand or enjoy the base game.

Edition Who it suits Our view
Standard — $69.99 listed U.S. price Players who want the campaign and core game, or anyone still deciding how much they will play. Best choice for most buyers. It lets you evaluate the main experience without paying in advance for expansions.
Deluxe — $99.99 listed U.S. price Players already committed to repeatable post-launch and bounty content. Defensible if you know you will spend substantial time in the endgame, but less compelling for a first-time or casual buyer.
Super Deluxe — $129.99 listed U.S. price Dedicated Borderlands fans who expect to buy the story and Vault Hunter expansions anyway. Potentially the efficient complete-package purchase, but not automatically the best value.

For PlayStation buyers who have made that decision, a platform-specific listing such as Borderlands 4 for PS5 is preferable to an ambiguous game search because the edition and platform matter. Check whether you are buying the Standard, Deluxe, or Super Deluxe package and whether the listing is for the PS5 version before completing the order.

For collectors and art-focused fans

The game’s visual identity and world design may also appeal to readers who collect game books. The Art of Borderlands 4 is a relevant companion purchase for that audience, but it is not required reading and should be treated as a separate collectible rather than part of the game’s value calculation.

Who should buy Borderlands 4?

Buy now or at a discount if you:

  • Want a fast, loot-heavy first-person shooter with a large supply of gear to test.
  • Enjoy building characters around weapons, abilities, skill trees, and gear effects.
  • Have friends available for online co-op or want to play local split-screen on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Like replaying campaigns with different classes and treating endgame content as a long-term hobby.
  • Are comfortable evaluating PC requirements and troubleshooting performance if you play on Windows.

Wait for a sale if you:

  • Play primarily for story and character writing.
  • Dislike repeated encounters, map activities, or the possibility of checklist-style exploration.
  • Mostly play solo and are unsure whether the weapon-and-build loop will hold your attention.
  • Are uncertain about paying for post-launch Story Packs or Vault Hunter content.
  • Own a borderline PC and do not want to spend time adjusting settings or diagnosing crashes.

How the reception matches the experience

The critical response is broadly positive but not unanimous. A current Metacritic snapshot lists an 81 critic score from 88 reviews and a 4.8 user score from 868 ratings, classifying the critic result as Generally Favorable and the user result as Generally Unfavorable. Those totals are volatile, and user scores can reflect launch-condition frustration or review bombing, so they are useful context rather than a replacement for analysis.

The review pattern is consistent across the broader coverage. PC Gamer treated Borderlands 4 as a possible high point for the series while criticizing some of its surrounding design choices. GameSpot scored it 7/10 and viewed parts of the new direction as an overcorrection. GamesRadar+ rated it four out of five, praising it as an excellent looter-shooter while warning players to be selective about how they spend their time.

That spread makes sense. The game’s best systems are easy to recognize within minutes: shooting feels good, drops invite experimentation, movement makes encounters more active, and co-op gives the whole loop a social purpose. The weaker elements accumulate more slowly: repeated activities, predictable story beats, constant jokes, and the possibility that your hardware will undermine an otherwise satisfying firefight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verdict

Borderlands 4 is a strong looter-shooter with a better-connected world, more useful traversal, and a more convincing set of playable characters than the series has recently offered. It does not reinvent the genre, but it improves the parts that matter most to people who play Borderlands for guns, builds, movement, and co-op.

It is also not a clean technical triumph or a narrative breakthrough. The PC launch left real trust issues, the requirements are demanding, and the campaign’s improved tone does not erase its predictable structure or uneven humor. Post-launch patches and shared progression make the current product more attractive than the launch conversation suggests, but they do not make every edition or platform equally sensible.

Buy the Standard Edition if you want to try the core game. Choose Deluxe only when you already know you want the ongoing bounty content, and choose Super Deluxe when you expect to buy the Story Packs and additional Vault Hunter content anyway. On the right hardware—and especially with friends—Borderlands 4 is very good at the thing it has always understood best: making one more gun, one more build, and one more fight difficult to resist.

The Bottom Line

Borderlands 4 is recommended with reservations. Its gunplay, loot, traversal, buildcrafting, and four-player co-op are excellent reasons to play, while the uneven story and demanding, historically troubled PC performance are reasons to be selective. The Standard Edition is the safest purchase; larger editions make sense mainly for committed long-term players.
