Its initial troubleshooting advice was to give shaders time to compile, then clear the shader cache using the graphics-card maker’s approved method if stuttering persisted. A 2K Support comment dated April 30, 2026 says the issue was resolved in a recent update, though it does not identify the build or confirm that every current performance problem is fixed.
What happened after the September 25 update?
The patch notes listed stability and performance improvements, including fixes related to hitching, low frame rates, crashes, character animations and some crossplay loading issues. At the same time, 2K Support acknowledged reports from players who saw performance get worse after downloading the patch. The September 25 update notes reproduced by SteamDB describe both the intended improvements and the reports of reduced performance.
PC Gamer’s coverage from September 25, 2025 also reported complaints of lower frame rates and more stuttering. It noted that some players saw improvement or little change. These accounts establish that players reported mixed experiences; they are not a controlled benchmark showing that the update lowered performance for everyone.
Why might Borderlands 4 stutter after the patch?
2K Support’s initial explanation was background shader compilation. Shaders may continue compiling while the game is running, which Support said could cause stuttering after the update. That guidance addresses the post-patch reports; it does not establish that shader compilation explains every performance problem a player may encounter.

What should you try if you are affected?
- Allow time for shader compilation. If you have just installed the September 25 patch and notice stuttering, continue playing for a while so shaders can compile in the background, as 2K Support advised.
- If it continues after 15 minutes, consider clearing the shader cache. Support’s advice was to use the cache-clearing method approved by your graphics-card manufacturer. Follow that manufacturer’s instructions rather than using an unrelated cleanup utility. Cache clearing is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check which game version you are troubleshooting. The original reports concern the September 25, 2025 patch. If you are experiencing trouble on a later build, the old thread may not explain its cause.
These steps and the 15-minute guidance come from 2K Support’s issue thread.

In a comment dated April 30, 2026, 2K Support representative Laura S. wrote: “This has been resolved in a recent update. Thank you for your patience!” The notice does not name the update or say that every later report of low FPS or stuttering has the same cause. It therefore confirms that Support marked the reported issue resolved, not that all performance problems in Borderlands 4 are fixed.
