imjpdct.dll is a Microsoft file associated with the Japanese Microsoft IME 2002 Dictionary Tool. If Windows says imjpdct.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, restore the related Windows or Japanese IME component rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is a legacy Microsoft component. It is historically associated with Windows XP Japanese IME components and older applications. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations use newer Japanese IME components, so an error on a modern computer often points to an old application, incomplete installation, damaged system files, or antivirus quarantine.

Before fixing the error
Write down:
- The exact error message
- The name of the program that displays it
- Whether the error appears during Windows startup or only when opening one application
- Your Windows version
- The path shown in the error, if one is provided
These details determine whether the problem belongs to Windows, Japanese language support, or one legacy application.
Do not download imjpdct.dll from a random DLL website. An unofficial copy may contain malware, use the wrong version, have the wrong architecture, or fail to match the application that requested it. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create DLL search-order problems.

Use Windows language settings, the original application installer, Windows Update, System Restore, or matching Windows installation media instead.
Fix 1: Reinstall Japanese language and Microsoft IME
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
This is the safest first repair when the error relates to Japanese input, text conversion, an old Japanese-language application, or an incomplete language installation.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- If Japanese is listed, select the three dots beside it and choose Language options.
- If Japanese is not listed, select Add a language.
- Search for Japanese, select it, and choose Next.
- Keep the language features selected, including the keyboard option.
- Select Install.
- Open Japanese language options and confirm that Microsoft IME appears under keyboards.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Under Preferred languages, select Add a preferred language.
- Search for Japanese.
- Select Japanese, choose Next, and install the language features.
- Select Japanese in the language list.
- Choose Options.
- Confirm that Microsoft IME is installed under keyboards.
- Restart Windows and test the program again.
Microsoft documents the current language and Japanese IME process in its guides for language packs for Windows and Microsoft Japanese IME.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the computer runs Windows XP
Windows XP used a different installation path:
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Regional and Language Options.
- Select the Languages tab.
- Select Details.
- Choose Add.
- Select Japanese as the input language.
- Select Microsoft IME Standard 2002 if it is offered.
- Apply the change and restart the computer.
Windows XP could require its original installation CD or a matching network installation source to add language files. Do not use a DLL downloaded from another computer as a substitute for the installation source.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if:
- The program starts without the
imjpdct.dllmessage - Japanese input can be selected from the taskbar
- Microsoft IME appears in Japanese keyboard settings
- The application’s dictionary or Japanese text functions work normally
If only one old program still fails, continue with Fix 3 rather than copying the DLL manually.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and repair system files
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
A missing or damaged protected Windows file can produce “not found,” “could not be loaded,” and “not designed to run on Windows” messages. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Install available updates
- Open Start.
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait until the operation finishes. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not detected as damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run
sfc /scannowonce more. - Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart into normal Windows and try again from an administrator Command Prompt.

If DISM cannot find repair files, Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source:

Replace the example source path only with a genuine, matching Windows repair source. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary download or a folder from a different Windows release.
Repeatedly hunting for damaged files and guessing which repair step changed the system can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft DISM and SFC procedure above.

How to tell whether this worked
Restart the computer and repeat the action that produced the error. If the message is gone, Windows component corruption was likely involved. If the error appears only in one old application, repair that application next.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If imjpdct.dll appears only when starting one program, the program may be retaining a dependency on the old Microsoft IME component. The error does not prove that a current game or application legitimately needs this file.
Use Windows app repair
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Microsoft provides additional guidance in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Back up the program’s settings and saved data if applicable.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its original vendor media or official installation source.
- Apply the program’s updates.
- Test it before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
If the program is very old, check whether it has a documented compatibility mode or a newer release. Do not install a DLL beside the executable simply because the error names that file.
What to do if the program is a modern game
A current game, launcher, or installer normally should not require the legacy Japanese IME 2002 Dictionary Tool. If one does:
- Record the exact executable name
- Record the installation directory
- Check whether the error appears before or after an update
- Verify or repair the game files using its official launcher
- Reinstall the launcher or game if verification fails
- Contact the application vendor with the complete error text
There is no reliable basis for assuming that every program reporting this filename needs the same repair.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a genuine legacy file, although restoring an unknown file is unsafe.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
imjpdct.dll. - Inspect the original file path and detection details.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
- Restore or allow the file only if you have confirmed that it came from a genuine Windows or application installation and the detection is a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to make the error disappear. Microsoft notes that Protection History retains events for a limited period, so older quarantine records may no longer be available. See Protection History in the Windows Security app.

If the file was quarantined from an old application folder, reinstalling that application from its official source is safer than restoring the quarantined copy.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The documented classic imjpdct.dll is an x86 or Win32 file associated with legacy Microsoft IME components. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but that does not make an arbitrary 64-bit DLL a valid replacement.
Check:
- The program named in the error
- Whether that program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The original path shown in the error
- Whether the file came from Windows, the IME installation, or the application
- Whether the file’s digital signature identifies Microsoft Corporation
Do not copy the file into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those directories serve different purposes despite their names. Do not copy an x86 file into a 64-bit application directory, and do not overwrite a system file without a matching official repair source.
A message stating that the file is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, a wrong architecture, an incompatible legacy component, or a file from a different Windows release. It does not by itself prove malware.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 6: Update input and system drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
imjpdct.dll is not a hardware driver. Driver work is therefore not a normal fix for this filename. Consider it only if the error began after a keyboard, language-input, motherboard, or system update and Device Manager shows a related warning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and any category related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available.
Get hardware drivers from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Avoid driver packages that merely promise to replace DLLs.
Manually checking each device and identifying stale versions can be tedious when the problem is broader than one keyboard entry. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is not required when Device Manager and the manufacturer’s official package resolve the issue.
How to tell whether this worked
Device Manager should no longer show a warning for the affected device, and the original input or application problem should be gone after restarting. If Device Manager is normal and only one application reports imjpdct.dll, return to Fix 3.

Do not start with:
regsvr32 imjpdct.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration-capable COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that the Microsoft IME 2002 Dictionary Tool is a self-registering COM component. Registering it is therefore unlikely to repair a missing-file, wrong-version, or bad-image error.
It can also produce a second error that distracts from the original problem. Microsoft explains the registration context in ActiveX control registry information.
Common causes of imjpdct.dll errors
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Japanese IME was removed or incompletely installed | Add Japanese and Microsoft IME through Windows language settings |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt |
| An old application was incompletely installed | Repair or reinstall that application from its official source |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection History and verify the original path before restoring |
| Wrong architecture or incompatible file | Use the correct application or Windows installation source |
| Recent update or driver change | Use System Restore or roll back the affected driver |
| Modern program unexpectedly requests the file | Identify the executable and repair its installation rather than downloading the DLL |
Frequently asked questions
Is imjpdct.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. Its description is Microsoft IME 2002. Dictionary Tool, and it belongs to Microsoft IME 2002. Its legitimacy still depends on where the file came from and whether its signature and path are consistent with a genuine Windows or application installation.
Is it part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
The file is historically associated with Windows XP Japanese IME components and legacy Microsoft IME 2002 installations. Its presence is not proof that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 requires it. On a modern system, first identify the old program requesting it.
Should I download imjpdct.dll separately?
No. Use Windows language settings, Windows repair tools, the original application installer, or matching Windows installation media. A standalone DLL from an unknown source can be malicious or incompatible.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy an unverified DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory. The correct location depends on the component and architecture, and manual copying often leaves the underlying installation damaged.
Why does a 64-bit computer report a 32-bit DLL error?
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications. A legacy 32-bit application may therefore request an x86 DLL. The solution is to repair the application or its genuine IME dependency, not to substitute a random 64-bit file.
What if the error says the procedure entry point cannot be found?
That usually indicates a mismatched or damaged DLL, an incompatible legacy component, or an application loading the wrong copy. Reinstall the affected component or application and run DISM followed by SFC.

One-click scans. No signup required.
What if every fix fails?
Run a full malware scan, inspect Event Viewer for the failing application, check disk health, and back up important files. If the problem follows system corruption that DISM and SFC cannot repair, use System Restore or an appropriate Windows repair installation.
