If an Xbox game will not download after purchase, first identify whether the failure is on an Xbox console or a Windows PC, then check Xbox service status before changing anything locally. On Windows, sign in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase, reopen the affected app, install Windows updates, update Microsoft Store from Library > Get updates, and use repair or reset before reinstalling. On either platform, an outage, account mismatch, regional restriction, device incompatibility, insufficient storage, blocked Store traffic, or a Gaming Services error can make a completed purchase appear unusable.
The safest approach is a decision tree: service check first, ownership and availability second, platform-specific repairs third, and reinstalling only after less disruptive fixes fail.

What should I check first when an Xbox game will not download?
Do not begin by buying the game again or repeatedly reinstalling it. Use the symptom and platform to choose the right branch.
| Where it fails | Typical symptom | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | Install does not start, download is very slow, or installation stops | Check Xbox service status, then follow Xbox’s console installation and download-speed troubleshooting flows. |
| Windows PC | No Install button, queue stuck at zero, Store error, or Xbox app installation failure | Confirm the purchasing Microsoft account, reopen the app, install Windows updates, and update Microsoft Store. |
| Windows PC with Gaming Services code | Codes such as 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F | Use the separate Gaming Services branch; do not treat the error as an ordinary download problem. |
1. Check Xbox service status
Open the official Xbox Live Status page before making local changes. A service incident can prevent licensing, store, or download requests from completing, and a local reset cannot repair an outage. If an incident is listed, wait for recovery rather than repeatedly cancelling the queue, resetting Windows, or attempting another purchase.

The status page is live and can change while you are troubleshooting, so record what it reports and check again if the symptom changes from “no Install button” to a stalled download.
2. Identify the exact symptom
“Won’t download” describes several different failures. A missing Install button points toward account, availability, compatibility, or device authorization. A title that appears in the queue but remains at zero percent points toward Store state, network policy, storage, or service availability. An explicit Gaming Services code needs its own procedure.

Is the problem on an Xbox console or a Windows PC?
Console and Windows troubleshooting are not interchangeable. Windows commands such as wsreset.exe, Microsoft Store repair, and installation-drive settings do not apply to an Xbox console.
If you are using an Xbox console
Use Xbox’s official console installation troubleshooting flow for a purchase that will not install, and its separate slow-download flow when the download starts but is unusually slow. Keep the console branch separate from Windows Store instructions; the account and entitlement can be valid while the console’s service connection or local queue is not ready.
First confirm that the purchased title is visible to the signed-in profile and that the console has enough free space. If the title is present but the queue is stopped, check Xbox service status again before repeatedly cancelling and restarting it. A service-side problem can leave a valid purchase waiting indefinitely.
If you are using a Windows PC
Use the Microsoft Store and Xbox-app branch below. The purchasing Microsoft account, Windows update state, Store cache, installation drive, firewall or proxy policy, and Gaming Services package can each block an otherwise valid purchase.
How do I fix an Xbox game that will not install on Windows?
Follow Microsoft’s least-disruptive order. Each step removes a different cause, so do not skip directly to reinstalling unless the earlier checks fail.
1. Sign in with the account that bought the game
Open the Xbox app and Microsoft Store and verify that both use the Microsoft account that completed the purchase. Microsoft describes this as the first step: “First, sign in to your Microsoft account. Next, work through these possible solutions in the order presented.”

If the game is absent from the library or the Store shows ownership without an Install button, account identity is the first branch to resolve. A different Windows user, a second Microsoft account, or a Store account left signed in from an earlier session can make the local app appear not to own the title.
2. Close and reopen the affected app
Exit the Xbox app or Microsoft Store completely, reopen it, and check the library again. This refreshes the app session without deleting installed games or changing the purchase.
3. Install Windows updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update, install every pending update, and restart when Windows asks. Microsoft lists a required restart after updates as one reason an app or game may remain unavailable until the system is rebooted.
4. Update Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store, select Library, then choose Get updates. Let Store finish updating before returning to the Xbox app. A stale Store client can fail to refresh ownership or download metadata even when the Xbox app itself opens normally.
5. Repair the Xbox app or Store
In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the affected app, open Advanced options, and choose Repair. Repair preserves the app’s data while replacing damaged app state. If Repair does not change the symptom, return to the same screen and choose Reset; reset is more disruptive because it clears the app’s local data and requires you to sign in again.
Apply Repair or Reset to the app that is failing: Xbox when the Xbox library or installer is broken, and Microsoft Store when Store itself will not retrieve the purchase. Do not reset several apps at once; changing one variable makes the next result easier to interpret.
6. Reinstall only after the earlier steps
Reinstalling the Xbox app or the game is a last resort, not the first response to a licensing or service problem. If Xbox service status is impaired, the account is wrong, the game is unavailable for the device, or Store traffic is blocked, reinstalling consumes time without addressing the dependency.
What should I do when Microsoft Store will not open or says I do not own the game?
Reset the Microsoft Store cache, then check updates, time, and location settings. This targets Store launch and cache state; it does not repair an Xbox outage, an account mismatch, or a blocked network.

Run wsreset.exe
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the blank command-prompt window to finish. Microsoft says it closes automatically after about ten seconds, and Microsoft Store then opens.
- Sign in again if prompted, open Library, select Get updates, and check the game.
The command resets Store cache and launch state. It is not a universal fix for every Xbox-app installation failure, so continue to the account, storage, and network branches if the purchase still does not appear.
Check time and location
Incorrect Windows time, date, time zone, or region can interfere with Store availability and licensing checks. In Windows Settings, verify that automatic time is enabled and that the region matches the account’s actual country or region. A region change is not a way to bypass a title’s availability rules; it can instead make an otherwise valid purchase harder for Store to resolve.

A completed purchase is only one part of installation. Microsoft identifies country or region, family settings, product availability, device compatibility, required restarts, and device authorization as reasons an owned app or game may be unavailable.
Check availability and compatibility
- Confirm that the title is offered in the account’s country or region.
- Check whether the game supports the Windows edition and device on which you are trying to install it.
- Complete any required Windows restart after updates.
- Review family settings if the account is managed as a child or family member.
- Check device authorization when the account has reached a device limit or the PC is no longer recognized.
These checks explain the specific “I own it, but there is no Install button” case better than repeated cache resets. If the game is available on the account but not on the device, contact Microsoft or Xbox Support with the exact account and device details rather than creating a second purchase.
Could storage or the installation drive be stopping the download?
Yes. Low free space can stop a Windows installation, and the Xbox app also needs a destination drive configured to receive new apps.
Check free space
Open Settings > System > Storage and verify that the selected drive has enough room for the game and its installation overhead. A queue that starts and then stops, or an installer that reports insufficient space, belongs on this branch before you change account or Store settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfigure the destination drive
In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved. Confirm that the drive selected for new apps is present, accessible, and has sufficient free capacity. If the Xbox app offers a drive choice, select that configured location rather than a disconnected or full volume.
When an external SSD helps
An external SSD can provide additional storage for Windows game installs or an Xbox-app library when capacity or the destination drive is the blocker. It cannot fix an outage, an account mismatch, a licensing or availability decision, Store registration, firewall or proxy restrictions, or a Gaming Services failure.

External-drive behavior on Xbox consoles varies by game and console-generation requirements. Do not assume that every Xbox console title can run directly from any USB drive; treat the drive as a storage-capacity solution only after the console’s compatibility rules and the installation message have been checked.
How do I tell whether a firewall or proxy is blocking the Xbox app?
Persistent Store download failures on a managed work or school PC can come from network policy rather than the game or account. Microsoft Learn’s Store troubleshooting guidance calls for checking Store registration, whether Store is allowed to download updates, whether required packages can be installed, and whether firewall or proxy rules block required endpoints.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Signs this is the network-policy branch
- Other internet services work, but Microsoft Store downloads remain at zero or fail immediately.
- The PC is managed by an employer, school, security product, proxy, or content filter.
- The same account works on another permitted network or device.
- Store registration or required-package checks report an error.
Ask the administrator to review Microsoft Store and Xbox service endpoints rather than disabling security controls permanently. On a personal PC, compare behavior on a permitted network and document any firewall or proxy error before changing rules.
What do Gaming Services errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F mean?
These codes are a separate, version-specific Windows 10 Gaming Services path. Microsoft’s support article documents them for Gaming Services installation or startup problems and identifies KB5004476 as the documented resolution.
Use the historical Windows 10 procedure only for the matching errors
If one of those exact codes appears, check whether the affected Windows 10 system has the documented KB5004476 update and install it through Windows Update when applicable. Microsoft also provides a Gaming Services removal and reinstall workaround for that scenario.
Do not apply this 2021 Windows 10 procedure as a universal fix for every Xbox app problem or to a different error code without matching documentation. Gaming Services changes over time, and an unrelated Store, account, storage, or network failure will not be repaired by removing the package.

Use the symptom to choose between service, storage, Store, and network branches rather than cancelling the queue repeatedly.
Queue never starts
- Check Xbox service status.
- Confirm the signed-in account owns the title.
- On Windows, reopen Xbox and Microsoft Store, install Windows updates, restart, and select Library > Get updates.
- Check that the game is available for the region, device, and account.
Download remains at zero percent
- Check whether other Store or Xbox downloads work.
- Run
wsreset.exeon Windows if Store is also failing. - Check the configured installation drive and free space.
- Investigate firewall or proxy restrictions if the PC is managed or filtered.
Installation starts and then stops
- Verify that the destination drive remains connected and has sufficient capacity.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Repair the affected Windows app, then reset it only if Repair fails.
- Use the Gaming Services branch if an exact documented code appears.
On a console, stay with Xbox’s console installation and download-speed troubleshooting flows. Do not use Windows Store commands on the console.

What information should I give support if none of these fixes work?
Escalation is faster when support can see the dependency that failed. Record:
- Platform: Xbox console model or Windows edition and PC.
- The exact error code or message, including punctuation and leading zeroes.
- The Microsoft account used for the purchase and whether the game appears in its library.
- Available storage and the selected installation drive.
- Whether other Xbox or Microsoft Store downloads work.
- Whether Xbox service status showed an incident.
- Which steps you completed, including updates,
wsreset.exe, Repair, Reset, and any Gaming Services procedure.
Use Xbox or Microsoft Support with that record. Do not keep making destructive changes once the evidence is collected, and do not purchase the title again while an ownership or service issue is unresolved.
How we organized the troubleshooting path
The order follows the dependencies that can block an installation while minimizing disruption: platform identification, service status, account and availability, app and Store state, storage, network policy, then error-specific Gaming Services repair. Hardware appears only in the storage branch because extra capacity cannot correct licensing, outages, Store registration, firewall or proxy blocks, or package errors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install the same purchase after switching to another Windows user?
The entitlement belongs to the Microsoft account that completed the purchase, not simply to the local Windows profile. Sign the Xbox app and Microsoft Store into that purchasing account; a different profile can show an empty library even when the purchase is valid.
Does running wsreset.exe remove my installed games or save files?
The command resets Microsoft Store cache and launch state; it is not a game-uninstall command. You may need to sign in again, but a Store-cache reset does not substitute for checking the account, drive, or service status.
Will changing my Windows region make an unavailable Xbox game install?
No. Region settings reflect Store availability and licensing rules rather than bypassing them. An incorrect region can create a new mismatch, so use the account’s actual country or region and contact support if availability is unclear.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can an external USB SSD run every Xbox game?
No. Its safest use here is adding capacity for Windows game installs or an Xbox-app library. Whether a console game can run from external storage depends on the console and title’s compatibility requirements.
