During its 2025 Kickstarter campaign, BrickBoy’s electronic upgrade kit was listed at campaign pledge prices that could exceed twice the price of LEGO’s Game Boy set. But BrickBoy is not a standalone LEGO alternative: it requires the LEGO set, sold separately, and the campaign has ended. LEGO’s US page lists set 72046 at $59.99 and available now as checked October 8, 2026; BrickBoy’s current retail price and availability are not established by the available sources.
Did BrickBoy cost more than twice as much?
At the time of the campaign, some reported BrickBoy tiers cost more than twice the LEGO Game Boy’s listed US price of $59.99. Brick Fanatics reported the Essential tier at €119, with Gamer at €139 or €129 early bird and Collector at €169 or €159 early bird. Lead Hacker Digital later described the cheapest option as €129, about $150 at the time. Those reports differ on the Essential price, so the comparison depends on the campaign date, tier and currency conversion—not a single verified current BrickBoy price.

The BrickBoy price was for an upgrade, and the LEGO set remained an additional purchase. Adding the LEGO set’s US list price to the reported campaign pledges gives an illustrative total of $59.99 plus the relevant euro pledge; that is not a precise dollar total because exchange rates vary, and it is not a current BrickBoy offer.

LEGO describes its model as a display replica: “The buildable LEGO® Nintendo system in this 421-piece set measures over 5.5 in. (14 cm) high, 3.5 in. (9 cm) wide and 1 in. (3 cm) deep and has no light, sound or digital play functions.” The lenticular screens and interchangeable Game Paks are display features, not working games.
What BrickBoy says it can play
Substance Labs says every BrickBoy kit supports Game Boy Classic titles; the Gamer and Collector editions also support Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games. The creator says original cartridges do not plug directly into BrickBoy and require its external Cartridge Reader add-on. It also claims compatible games can use local wireless multiplayer, but link-cable multiplayer is not supported. These are creator-provided compatibility claims, not independently tested results.
