Operation Belong was a proposed British Army Fortnite island and influencer livestream, not a released game. Army Jobs promoted a training-course-style experience under the “You Belong Here” slogan for 24 January 2024, with creators including Elz the Witch and Yung Filly (and, in contemporaneous reports, Talia Mar). The island was still in Epic’s moderation process and had not been published when it was reported. The Army later said the initiative was not active recruiting, contained no direct Army Jobs application link, and would not proceed after consultation with industry partners. Parliament recorded that the cinematic trailer promoting the livestream series cost about £100,000; that figure was not a disclosed total project budget.
What was Operation Belong Fortnite?
Operation Belong was a planned Fortnite Creative-style island designed around military-training obstacles, teamwork and competition. Army Jobs presented it as an experience connected to the British Army’s “You Belong Here” campaign, with a gaming-influencer livestream scheduled for 24 January 2024.

The concept was an activity inside Fortnite rather than a separate retail game, application or downloadable Army simulator. Promotional material framed the map as a training-course-style challenge. Planned creator participation included Elz the Witch and Yung Filly; reporting at the time also named Talia Mar.
That distinction matters because the project never reached the normal stage at which players could search for and load a published island. PC Gamer reported on 19 January 2024 that the island was unpublished and undergoing Epic’s moderation process. The Army subsequently decided not to proceed, so there is no evidence of a publicly playable Operation Belong map.

What was the timeline for the project?
The dates show a short-lived promotion that moved from an announced event to a non-proceeding project within weeks.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 4 September 2023 | The British Army launched the wider “You Belong Here” recruitment campaign for people aged 16 to 34, covering Regulars, Reserves and Officers. |
| 17 January 2024 | Army Jobs promotion for Operation Belong was reported, advertising a 24 January event. |
| 19 January 2024 | PC Gamer reported that the Fortnite island had not been published and was in Epic’s moderation process. |
| 24 January 2024 | The Ministry of Defence told Parliament that the Army was not actively advertising recruitment in Fortnite. The answer also put the cinematic trailer’s cost at about £100,000. |
| February 2024 | The Army’s decision not to proceed, following consultation with industry partners, was reported by Esports News UK. |
The schedule therefore describes a planned livestream, not a confirmed broadcast. An advertised date alone does not establish that the map opened to the public or that the creator event took place as originally proposed.

Did the British Army recruit through Fortnite?
The Army said no. In a statement quoted by Esports News UK, a British Army spokesperson said: “The initiative never involved active recruiting and there was no direct link from the game to an Army Jobs application.” A Ministry of Defence answer to Parliament on 24 January likewise stated: “The Army is not actively advertising recruitment in Fortnite.”
Those statements describe the project’s stated mechanism: awareness and values messaging rather than an in-game enlistment funnel. They do not erase why observers interpreted the promotion as recruitment-adjacent. The project used the same “You Belong Here” identity as a campaign explicitly created to address barriers to joining the Army, and it placed that identity in a game with a large young audience.
The most accurate description is therefore narrower than either extreme. Operation Belong was not documented as a Fortnite application portal or direct enlistment tool, but it was a military-branded engagement project linked to a recruitment campaign. Readers should separate the Army’s stated intent from the possible recruiting effect of presenting Army values and activities in a popular game.
Why did Operation Belong not proceed?
The Army’s public explanation was a decision made after consultation with industry partners. The spokesperson quoted by Esports News UK said: “However, after consultation with our industry partners we have decided not to proceed with the project.” The statement does not identify a single technical failure, legal ruling or named partner as the decisive cause.

What moderation had to do with the plan
Before the cancellation decision was reported, the island was still subject to Epic’s moderation process. That meant its publication had not been approved and its final availability was unresolved. Moderation status is not the same as a rejection: it indicates review was underway, not that the map had passed or failed.
What the public record does not establish
- There is no public evidence that the island was released and later removed.
- There is no disclosed total budget for the island, livestream, creator participation and associated promotion combined.
- The Army did not publish a detailed account identifying which consultation concern ended the project.
Accordingly, claims that the map was cancelled for one specific policy violation or that it was secretly playable go beyond the documented record.
Was the Operation Belong map ever playable?
No public playability is evidenced. PC Gamer’s 19 January report quoted an Epic representative saying: “This island has not yet been published to Fortnite … and is undergoing moderation.” The Army’s later decision not to proceed supplies no indication that a subsequent public release occurred.
Operation Belong should therefore be treated as a proposed island whose publication was never confirmed, rather than as a delisted Fortnite mode. Screenshots, trailers or influencer references cannot by themselves prove that ordinary players could enter the map. The available record supports a planned experience and a planned livestream, not a finished public game space.
How much did the British Army Fortnite advert cost?
Parliament recorded a cost of about £100,000 for the cinematic trailer promoting the gaming-influencer livestream series. The figure appeared in the Ministry of Defence’s 24 January 2024 answer and should be read as an approximate amount for that trailer, not as a complete Operation Belong budget.
The parliamentary answer does not separately state spending on island development, moderation preparation, creator fees, livestream production, media placement or the wider “You Belong Here” campaign. Adding those categories to the trailer figure would create a total that has not been reported. Conversely, describing the £100,000 as the cost of the entire Fortnite project would understate what the answer actually says.

How was Operation Belong connected to “You Belong Here”?
The Fortnite concept borrowed its slogan and hashtag from the British Army’s broader campaign launched on 4 September 2023. That campaign targeted 16-to-34-year-olds across Regular, Reserve and Officer routes and tried to challenge the belief that a person might not fit into Army life.
The Army’s official campaign material reported three figures:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- 59% of young people surveyed did not believe they would fit in the British Army.
- 88% said a career reflecting their values was important.
- 48% believed the Army would fulfil their values.
It identified shared values including respect, fun, hard work and helpfulness. Major General Tom Bewick, the Army’s General Officer Commanding for Recruiting, said the campaign was intended to evolve in response to barriers to recruitment and to show young people that they were more alike than they might think.
That context explains why a Fortnite obstacle course could be presented as a belonging and values message while still attracting scrutiny as recruitment marketing. The project’s branding was not created in isolation for a game; it was an extension of a campaign whose stated purpose included changing perceptions of Army careers.
What did Fortnite’s rules say about military recruitment?
Platform rules provide important context, but dates must be kept separate. Esports News UK quoted the Fortnite Island Creator Rules in force at the time as barring commercial content that promoted enrollment in the military. That contemporaneous rule language helps explain why an Army-branded island required careful review.
Epic’s current Fortnite Developer Rules were updated on 29 April 2026. The current wording says island metadata must not solicit people to “join, participate in, or donate to” a real-world military organization. This is evidence of the policy in force now; it does not prove that every word or prohibition was identical in January 2024.

The distinction is significant. A rule against solicitation concerns what an island or its metadata asks users to do. The Army’s public description emphasized awareness and values messaging and denied a direct application link. Whether that distinction would have satisfied the applicable rules was never resolved publicly because the island did not proceed.
How should players interpret the Army’s intent versus its effect?
There are two defensible lenses, and they answer different questions.
Stated intent
The Army described Operation Belong as an initiative without active recruiting and without a direct route to an Army Jobs application. Its format—obstacles, teamwork and an influencer event—was presented as engagement around belonging and shared values.
Likely audience effect
Regardless of the stated mechanism, placing military imagery, language and role models in Fortnite can normalize the organization for players who may be too young to consider an application or who are simply encountering the Army as entertainment. That is why critics and observers could regard the project as recruitment-adjacent even when no enlistment button existed.

These are not mutually exclusive claims. An advertiser can avoid direct solicitation while still influencing awareness, familiarity or attitudes. The public evidence supports discussing that tension, not assigning an unreported conversion rate or claiming that Operation Belong itself produced applications.

- Confirmed: The Army later decided not to proceed after consulting industry partners.
- Confirmed: Parliament recorded approximately £100,000 for the cinematic trailer promoting the livestream series.

This distinction prevents a proposed island from being misremembered as a released Fortnite mode and prevents a trailer cost from being mistaken for the price of an entire campaign.
Why does the episode matter for Fortnite and game marketing?
Operation Belong illustrates the boundary between branded entertainment and direct recruitment. A game map can communicate identity, teamwork and institutional values without containing a conventional application form. Yet the combination of a youth-facing platform, military branding and creator promotion can produce the same public concerns as more explicit recruitment advertising.
It also shows why platform review is part of campaign planning, not a final administrative step. Rules governing military solicitation can change, and a concept that appears to be values-led may still require close examination of its metadata, calls to action, creator scripts and off-platform destinations. In this case, the island remained in moderation while the public debate unfolded, and the Army ultimately stopped the project before a public release was documented.
Finally, the episode demonstrates the importance of precise budgeting language. The only parliamentary figure is an approximate £100,000 trailer cost. Without a disclosed total, readers should not infer how much was spent on development, talent or media beyond that stated production amount.
What is the bottom line on Operation Belong?
Operation Belong was a planned British Army Fortnite obstacle-course island and influencer livestream tied to the “You Belong Here” campaign. It was never documented as a playable public release, the Army denied that it involved active recruiting or a direct Army Jobs link, and the project was abandoned after industry consultation. The best-supported cost figure is about £100,000 for its cinematic trailer—not a complete campaign budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Operation Belong a separate Fortnite game that players could download?
No. It was conceived as an island within Fortnite’s ecosystem, so it would have depended on Fortnite rather than existing as a standalone Army title. No separate client, boxed release or independent download was announced.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDid the £100,000 cover the whole Operation Belong campaign?
The parliamentary wording applies the approximate £100,000 figure to the cinematic trailer promoting the livestream series. It does not disclose combined spending for map creation, creators, livestream operations or media, so a full campaign total cannot be calculated from that answer.
Why can’t today’s Fortnite rules prove exactly what happened in January 2024?
Epic’s currently published Developer Rules carry a 29 April 2026 update date. They show the present standard for military-related solicitation, but platform policies can be revised, so the current text cannot establish that every January 2024 rule was identical.
Was the planned 24 January livestream definitely broadcast?
The event was advertised for that date, but the public record does not confirm that the broadcast occurred in its planned form. The later decision not to proceed and the lack of a published island make an advertised schedule insufficient evidence of a completed show.
