Ordinary ice, packed ice, and blue ice form Minecraft’s established ice progression, while Brittle Ice is a separate experimental block in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. Ordinary ice is the basic, translucent material and can melt into water. Packed Ice is a permanent, opaque slippery block that can be crafted from ice. Blue Ice is crafted from packed ice, is even more slippery, and is the usual choice for long-distance boat highways. Brittle Ice is not a faster highway variant: in the October 13, 2026 Java snapshot, it cracks and breaks when a player or ordinary mob steps on it.

The practical choice is straightforward: use ordinary ice as a raw material or temporary surface, packed ice for durable general-purpose paths and economical boat tracks, blue ice for maximum boat-track slipperiness, and Brittle Ice only when you specifically want a fragile environmental mechanic.

Ice types at a glance

Block Melting Movement and transport Where it comes from Walking durability
Ordinary Ice Can melt under suitable light or heat conditions and becomes a water source. Slippery; useful for temporary paths and as the raw material for denser ice. Naturally generates in frozen environments, including frozen rivers. Does not have Brittle Ice’s step-to-break behavior.
Packed Ice Does not melt near light sources. Slippery; supports water-current item transport and boat tracks. A cited Minecraft Fandom reference lists 40 m/s as a packed-ice boat top speed; that figure is version-sensitive and should not be treated as a universal cross-edition benchmark. Crafted from ordinary ice or harvested with Silk Touch. Durable when players and ordinary mobs walk over it.
Blue Ice Its dense form is used where a permanent slippery surface is wanted. More slippery than ordinary or packed ice; preferred for maximum-speed, long-distance boat highways. Generates in the lower parts of frozen-ocean icebergs; also crafted from packed ice. Durable under normal walking.
Brittle Ice Snapshot behavior is defined by cracking and breaking after an entity steps on it, not by ordinary light-source melting. Transport advantage is not stated in Mojang’s announcement. Generates in Ice Caves; can also form when water flowing horizontally onto Blue Ice changes into Brittle Ice. A player or ordinary mob starts its cracking sequence. Frostbite can walk on it without breaking it.

The first three blocks belong to the familiar Ice → Packed Ice → Blue Ice material chain. Brittle Ice should be treated separately because the cited Mojang announcement describes it as a newly introduced snapshot block, not as a craftable upgrade in that chain.

Ordinary Ice: the basic material

Ordinary Ice is translucent and naturally generated in frozen environments. Frozen rivers are one documented source, and other cold terrain can provide it as part of the normal world generation of icy regions. Its most important practical property is that it can melt into a water source when exposed to suitable light or heat conditions. That makes it useful, but it also means an uncovered ice floor can require maintenance.

What ordinary ice is good for

  • Crafting input: ordinary ice is the starting material for packed ice.
  • Temporary slippery surfaces: it provides the same basic sliding behavior players expect from ice, provided the block does not melt.
  • Cold-environment builds: its translucent appearance works well for frozen rivers, windows, and decorative ice.

Ordinary ice is the least maintenance-free choice. If a build contains torches, lanterns, lava, fire, or other heat and light sources close enough to trigger melting, replace the travel surface with packed ice or blue ice. Silk Touch is the normal way to collect ice as a block rather than receiving its melted-water behavior when mining.

Packed Ice: durable and economical

Packed Ice is an opaque, denser-looking ice block that does not melt near light sources. It remains slippery, making it suitable for player movement, item transport in water currents, and boat tracks. Because it is more stable than ordinary ice, it is the practical default for many medium-length routes and builds where you want ice behavior without guarding every nearby light source.

How to obtain packed ice

Packed Ice can be crafted from ordinary ice. The established recipe uses nine ordinary Ice blocks to make one Packed Ice block, so large highways require a substantial ice farm or a reliable supply of naturally generated ice. Packed Ice can also be harvested as a block with Silk Touch.

Boat-track performance

Packed Ice is a proven boat-track material. The cited Minecraft Fandom reference gives a top speed of 40 m/s on packed ice. That number is tied to the reference’s version and measurement context; it is not a promise that every Minecraft edition, release, or configuration will produce exactly the same result. Packed Ice is still a sensible choice when you need a durable track and do not want to spend the extra material required for blue ice.

Other uses

  • Item streams: water currents can carry items over packed-ice layouts.
  • General paths: it provides a permanent slippery surface near ordinary lighting.
  • Blue Ice production: nine Packed Ice blocks craft into one Blue Ice block.

Blue Ice: the high-performance highway surface

Blue Ice is described as a denser form of packed ice and is substantially more slippery than ordinary or packed ice. That lower-friction behavior is why builders favor it for long-distance boat highways, where a small improvement in travel speed compounds over hundreds or thousands of blocks.

Natural generation

Blue Ice generates in the lower parts of frozen-ocean icebergs. Finding it naturally can therefore be slower than collecting ordinary ice, especially when a route needs many stacks. The block can also be produced through crafting: nine Packed Ice make one Blue Ice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Harvesting requirement

Blue Ice requires Silk Touch to harvest as a block. Without Silk Touch, breaking it drops nothing. Bring a Silk Touch tool before mining an iceberg or dismantling an existing highway; otherwise the time spent locating the ice will not translate into a usable block supply.

When the extra cost is justified

Use Blue Ice when maximum slipperiness and long-distance travel matter more than material efficiency. A short local route usually does not justify upgrading every segment from packed ice. A main-nether-hub connection, intercity route, or other heavily used highway is a better candidate because faster travel is experienced repeatedly.

Brittle Ice: a Java 26.4 snapshot mechanic

Mojang’s Java Team announced Brittle Ice in Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 4, published October 13, 2026. The announcement says Brittle Ice can be found in Ice Caves. It is snapshot content, so the announcement does not establish that the block is in a final release or available in Bedrock Edition.

What happens when it is stepped on

When a player or mob steps on Brittle Ice, it starts to crack and eventually breaks. This makes it fundamentally different from ordinary, packed, and blue ice: the block’s defining interaction is temporary structural failure under entities, not a permanent slippery surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announced exception is the Frostbite mob. Frostbite can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it. The announcement does not describe equivalent protection for players or ordinary mobs, so do not assume that another mob, armor item, potion, or enchantment prevents the cracking sequence.

How to get Brittle Ice

  1. Find an Ice Cave: Brittle Ice generates there in the Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 world-generation rules.
  2. Use Silk Touch: Mojang states that Brittle Ice is obtainable with Silk Touch.
  3. Create it from Blue Ice contact: any water block that borders a Blue Ice block horizontally turns into Brittle Ice in this snapshot.

This horizontal-contact rule is not the same as crafting. The water must border Blue Ice horizontally; the cited announcement does not say that vertical water contact, flowing water from another direction, or ordinary ice produces Brittle Ice.

What Brittle Ice is not

  • It is not presented as a faster replacement for Blue Ice.
  • It is not part of the established Ice-to-Packed-Ice-to-Blue-Ice crafting chain.
  • It is not safe for a normal walkway if players or ordinary mobs are expected to cross repeatedly.
  • It should not be described as a final-release or Bedrock feature based only on the October 13, 2026 snapshot announcement.

The crafting and acquisition chain

For the established ice materials, the progression is linear:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Collect ordinary Ice, normally with Silk Touch, from frozen terrain or an ice farm.
  2. Craft nine Ice into one Packed Ice.
  3. Craft nine Packed Ice into one Blue Ice.
  4. For naturally generated Packed Ice or Blue Ice, use Silk Touch when mining the block. Blue Ice drops nothing without Silk Touch.

Brittle Ice branches away from this progression. It comes from Ice Caves, Silk Touch harvesting, or the snapshot’s horizontal water-and-Blue-Ice conversion. No cited source gives a Brittle Ice crafting recipe.

Which ice should you choose?

Choose ordinary Ice when…

  • You need the raw material for packed ice.
  • You are building in a reliably cold, low-light area and can accept the possibility of melting.
  • You want a temporary slippery or translucent decorative surface.

Choose Packed Ice when…

  • You need a durable slippery path near ordinary light sources.
  • You are making a general-purpose boat track and want a lower material cost than Blue Ice.
  • You are moving items with water currents across an ice-supported route.

Choose Blue Ice when…

  • You are optimizing a long-distance boat highway.
  • The route is used often enough for extra slipperiness to repay the additional crafting and harvesting effort.
  • You have Silk Touch and enough Packed Ice to support the nine-to-one conversion.

Choose Brittle Ice when…

  • You are experimenting with Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 content.
  • You want a floor that reacts dramatically when players or ordinary mobs step on it.
  • You are designing an Ice Cave, trap, puzzle, or adventure area where cracking is intentional.

Building a reliable boat highway

For a permanent route, start with Packed Ice if material supply is the limiting factor, then reserve Blue Ice for the busiest or longest sections. Blue Ice is the preferred maximum-speed surface because it is more slippery, but the cited material does not provide a universal Blue Ice speed figure. Avoid presenting the packed-ice 40 m/s reference as a guarantee for Blue Ice, Bedrock Edition, or every Java release.

Material and maintenance checks

  • Protect ordinary Ice: nearby heat or light can melt it into water, so use Packed Ice or Blue Ice for exposed infrastructure.
  • Carry Silk Touch: it is required to harvest Blue Ice as a block and is the dependable way to collect ordinary Ice and Packed Ice blocks.
  • Plan the conversion ratio: every Blue Ice block consumes nine Packed Ice, and every Packed Ice block consumes nine ordinary Ice.
  • Keep Brittle Ice off normal routes: a single player or ordinary mob can start its crack-and-break behavior.

Common mistakes and fixes

“Packed Ice will melt under my lanterns.”

Packed Ice does not melt near light sources according to the cited Minecraft references. If a section is disappearing, check whether it is actually ordinary Ice or Brittle Ice rather than Packed Ice.

“I mined Blue Ice but received nothing.”

Blue Ice requires Silk Touch to drop as a block. Return with a Silk Touch tool; breaking it without that enchantment does not provide the block for construction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Brittle Ice is missing from my world.”

Check the edition and version first. Brittle Ice was documented for Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4, published October 13, 2026. The announcement does not establish final-release or Bedrock availability, so a standard release or another edition may not contain it.

“My Brittle Ice path keeps breaking.”

That is the intended snapshot behavior when a player or ordinary mob steps on it. Use Packed Ice or Blue Ice for a permanent walkway, or reserve Brittle Ice for a route where cracking is part of the design. Frostbite is the named exception that can cross without breaking it.

“Water beside Blue Ice changed unexpectedly.”

In the snapshot, any water block bordering Blue Ice horizontally turns into Brittle Ice. Keep water away from Blue Ice where you need ordinary water to remain, or use the conversion deliberately when creating Brittle Ice.

Version and edition limits

The ordinary, packed, and blue ice behaviors described above are established Minecraft mechanics documented by the cited Minecraft references. Brittle Ice is different: the available evidence is Mojang’s Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 announcement from October 13, 2026. Until a final release note confirms otherwise, treat its generation, Silk Touch acquisition, Frostbite exception, and horizontal water conversion as snapshot-specific. Do not assume that a Bedrock world, an older Java release, or a later release has identical behavior.
