brmfcwia.dll errors usually appear as “The program can’t start because brmfcwia.dll is missing from your computer” or “The code execution cannot proceed because brmfcwia.dll was not found.” You may also see “There was a problem starting brmfcwia.dll,” “Error loading brmfcwia.dll,” or “brmfcwia.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The important point is that this is normally a Brother MFC scanner-driver problem, not a missing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. brmfcwia.dll is the name associated with the Brother MFC-series Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, minidriver. Repair the complete scanner package rather than downloading the DLL by itself.

The 60-second answer
- Identify the exact Brother MFC model.
- Check whether Windows is 10 or 11 and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install pending Windows updates and driver updates.
- Download the current scanner or full driver package for that exact Brother model from Brother Support.
- Remove the damaged Brother installation if necessary, restart, and reinstall the package.
- Run DISM and System File Checker if Windows components or the Driver Store may be damaged.
- Check antivirus quarantine, the WIA service, Device Manager, and the USB or network connection.
Do not start by copying brmfcwia.dll into System32, and do not run regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair. A WIA minidriver is installed and loaded through its driver package, INF files, architecture-specific components, and the Windows WIA system.

What brmfcwia.dll does
WIA is Windows’ scanner and camera architecture. Applications such as Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, Paint, and Brother scanning software communicate with the Windows Image Acquisition service, which loads the vendor’s WIA minidriver.

That makes brmfcwia.dll a hardware-driver component rather than a general-purpose application library. The file is associated with Brother MFC-series scanning, even though old file metadata may describe it as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System and identify Microsoft as the publisher. The device-specific scanner support remains Brother-related and must be repaired through the appropriate Brother or Windows driver package.
Historical driver packages identify a 32-bit version numbered 1.0.0.17 with a reported size of about 0.14 MB. That information does not establish the correct version for every Windows installation. Current Brother packages may use a different filename or reorganize the driver components.
The file may be stored in the Windows Driver Store or another driver-managed location instead of an application directory. Its absence from C:WindowsSystem32 alone does not prove that Windows is damaged.

The Brother scanner driver is incomplete
This is the most likely cause when printing still works but scanning stopped. Printer and scanner support may be installed as separate components, so a working printer does not prove that the WIA scanner driver is healthy.
The problem often follows:
- Removing Brother software
- Reinstalling only the printer driver
- Upgrading Windows
- Changing from USB to network scanning
- A failed driver update
- Connecting the MFC before the installer requests it
- Removing old driver packages manually
Windows or the Driver Store is damaged
A failed update, disk problem, cleanup utility, or interrupted installation can damage protected Windows files or the driver package records that tell Windows how to load the scanner.
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that brmfcwia.dll itself is missing. It can indicate that a dependency, registration entry, INF component, or related driver file cannot be loaded.
The package does not match the system
A 32-bit and 64-bit WIA installation are not interchangeable. On 64-bit Windows, the correct Brother package must support the operating system and the exact MFC model. Substituting a DLL from another architecture or another model can make the error worse.

Antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a driver file or block its installation. Do not restore a loose DLL simply because its filename looks familiar. Check the detection details and prefer reinstalling a clean package from Brother or Windows.
The scanner connection or WIA service is failing
A USB cable, network path, device entry, or Windows service problem can produce a driver-load error even when the file is present. Test whether Windows can detect the scanner independently of the Brother application.
Before changing anything, record the setup
You need four details before choosing a driver:
- The exact Brother MFC model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- System type: 32-bit or 64-bit
- Connection type: USB or network
Check the Windows version and architecture
- Press
Win + R. - Type
winver. - Press Enter and note whether Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed.
- Close the dialog.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look for System type.
Do not use a package intended for a different MFC model because the product names appear similar. If the PC is running 64-bit Windows, select the Brother package offered for that system rather than looking for a separate loose 64-bit DLL.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Brother scanner package
This is the primary repair for brmfcwia.dll errors.
Brother commonly provides a model-specific Printer Driver & Scanner Driver package or a Full Driver & Software Package. Select the exact MFC model, Windows release, architecture, and connection type on Brother Support.
Remove the damaged installation
The removal process varies slightly by Brother model, but use this order:
- Disconnect the USB cable if the scanner is connected by USB.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Remove Brother utilities, scanner software, and printer software associated with the MFC.
- Restart Windows.
If Brother supplies a model-specific uninstall tool, use it instead of deleting individual DLLs. Do not manually remove files from the Driver Store.
Install the correct package
- Open Brother Support in a browser.
- Search for the exact MFC model.
- Select the installed Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the current scanner driver or Full Driver & Software Package.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose the connection type requested by the installer.
- For USB, connect the cable only when the installer asks.
- For network scanning, ensure the MFC and PC are on the same network.
- Allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
If the installer offers a choice between a printer-only package and a combined package containing WIA or TWAIN scanner support, choose the package that includes scanner support.
Check the result
After restarting:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother MFC.
- Check whether scanner-related options appear.
- Open Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, Paint, or Brother’s scanning application.
- Try a preview scan.
A successful repair means the scanner is detected and can acquire an image. The exact brmfcwia.dll filename may not appear in the current installation, and that is not necessarily a problem. Newer driver packages can replace or reorganize older components.
Reinstalling drivers manually means identifying the correct model, architecture, connection method, and package among several downloads. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the driver-installation work; its full version performs the driver installation, while reinstalling the exact Brother package remains the preferred device-specific repair.
Fix 2: Install Windows driver updates
Windows Update may contain a compatible scanner or imaging driver, although it may not offer the same package available from Brother.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Brother, imaging, printer, or scanner driver if one is listed.
- Restart the PC.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Select View optional updates, if shown.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a relevant Brother or imaging driver.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Update does not always display a driver even when the hardware provider has a suitable package. If no Brother driver appears, continue with the model-specific Brother installation rather than repeatedly checking for the same update.

Use Device Manager when the scanner appears with a warning icon, an unknown imaging device, or an old Brother entry.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers, checking each section.
- Look for the Brother MFC, an unknown scanner, or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to remove the stale package and have the correct Brother installer ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Brother scanner or full driver installer again.
Do not uninstall unrelated imaging devices. If the MFC is not listed at all, check the USB cable, another USB port, network reachability, and whether the device is powered on before assuming that a DLL is missing.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the error began after an update, system cleanup, disk problem, or failed driver installation. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. It may appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the window unless it reports an error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
Interpret the result
If DISM completes successfully and SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the Brother scanner again.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, Windows’ protected files passed its check. That does not prove that the Brother scanner package, WIA registration, device entry, or network connection is correct.
If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation or could not repair some files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Reinstall the Brother scanner package after the repair.
Do not expect SFC to restore every model-specific Brother driver file. Its main role is repairing protected Windows components.

Fix 5: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
The WIA service must be available for many Windows scanning applications.
- Press
Win + R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Check Startup type.
- If it is disabled, change it to a suitable automatic or manual startup setting permitted by Windows.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the scanning application.
If WIA fails to start, note the exact error. That points toward a Windows service, dependency, or system-file issue rather than a simple missing DLL. Do not change unrelated services.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine safely
If the error began immediately after a security scan or antivirus update:
- Open the installed security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent area.
- Search for a Brother driver or
brmfcwia.dll. - Review the detected file’s location and detection name.
- Do not restore it if it came from an unknown download or an unexpected folder.
- Update the security application.
- Run a full system scan.
- Reinstall the Brother package from its official support page.
A genuine filename does not prove that the file is genuine. If the security product continues to detect the official package, consult the security vendor’s detection details rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an unverified source.

Fix 7: Check USB, network, and scanner detection
USB connection
- Turn on the MFC.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Restart Windows.
- Connect the cable directly to another USB port on the PC.
- Avoid an unpowered hub during testing.
- Open Device Manager and watch for a new imaging or printer entry.
- Run the Brother scanning application.
If the device appears and disappears, the cable, port, power, or USB installation may be the real cause.
Network connection
- Confirm that the MFC is powered on.
- Confirm that the PC and MFC are connected to the same network.
- Check the MFC’s network status or displayed address.
- Temporarily test from a location with fewer network restrictions.
- Run the Brother installer’s network discovery or device-selection step.
- Test scanning from Windows Scan or Brother software.
Printing over the network can work while scanning fails because the printer and scanner components use different services and discovery paths.
Why downloading brmfcwia.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites do not provide a dependable repair for this problem. A downloaded file can have:
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong version
- Missing dependencies
- No matching INF or catalog
- An invalid or missing digital signature
- A filename copied from another Brother model
- Malware or an unwanted modification
Even a clean DLL copied into System32 may not be loaded because Windows expects the complete driver package and its registration. It can also hide the real problem, such as a missing dependency or broken WIA device entry.
Use Windows Update and the exact Brother model’s official support package instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. A Brother WIA minidriver is normally loaded through the WIA driver and INF installation mechanism.
Running:
regsvr32 brmfcwia.dll
may produce “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” That message does not mean you need a different copy of the file. It means this is not the type of DLL that should be repaired through manual registry registration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not use regsvr32 unless Brother’s model-specific documentation explicitly instructs you to do so for that exact component.
If the error says “not designed to run on Windows”
That message can indicate a damaged file, architecture mismatch, incompatible legacy driver, or a missing dependency. It is not proof that reinstalling a Microsoft runtime will solve the issue.
Work through these checks:
- Confirm 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
- Remove the old Brother package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the package offered for the exact MFC model and Windows release.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Test with Windows Scan or Windows Fax and Scan.
If the current Windows release no longer supports the legacy MFC model, Brother’s support information for that model is the deciding source. A newer Windows installation may use a different Brother driver component and may not contain brmfcwia.dll at all.

FAQ
Is brmfcwia.dll a legitimate Windows file?
The filename is legitimate and is associated with the Brother MFC WIA scanner minidriver. Its presence, location, and exact version depend on the Windows build, Brother model, architecture, and installed driver package.
Is it a Microsoft runtime?
No evidence indicates that it is a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. Reinstalling those packages is not the normal fix for this Brother scanner component.
Is brmfcwia.dll from Microsoft or Brother?
Older metadata may describe it as part of Microsoft Windows and list Microsoft as the publisher, while the component itself supports Brother MFC scanning. Treat it as part of the Windows/Brother driver relationship and repair it with the correct model-specific scanner package.
Should I expect it in System32?
No. Driver files are commonly managed through the Windows Driver Store and related driver locations. Do not use the absence of a file in System32 as the sole diagnosis.
What is the difference between WIA and TWAIN?
Both are scanner interfaces. WIA is Windows’ built-in imaging architecture, while TWAIN is another interface often supplied by scanner manufacturers. A Brother package may install one or both, so an application using TWAIN can fail differently from Windows Scan using WIA.
Can printing work while scanning fails?
Yes. Printing and scanning can use separate driver components, services, and connection paths. Working printing strongly suggests that the scanner portion deserves attention first.
Will SFC always restore brmfcwia.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files when its component store contains the correct repair source. It may not restore a model-specific Brother driver, repair an INF registration, or fix a device connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the current Brother package does not contain this filename?
That can be normal. Driver revisions and Windows architecture changes can replace or reorganize older components. Judge the installation by whether the exact MFC scanner is detected and can scan, not by whether this historical filename appears.
Is Windows Features the right place to fix it?
Usually not. Enabling unrelated Windows Features does not reinstall a Brother WIA minidriver. Repair the Brother package, WIA service, Windows components, and device connection instead.
