Before you start: what is known about Brotato on PS5?
The US PlayStation Store lists Brotato as a digital PS4 and PS5 game published by Seaven Studio. Its listing notes that the PS5 version may require the latest system software: Brotato PS4 & PS5 on PlayStation Store.
That confirms the available versions and publisher, but it does not establish a universal PS5 crash cause or a fix that works for every player. Brotato’s announcement archive includes PC update notes mentioning crash fixes, but those notes do not confirm that the same changes apply to the PS5 version: Brotato announcements on Steam.
Try these 10 steps in order
Start with updates and other low-impact checks. Steps 5, 6, and 8 are particularly relevant if Brotato crashes while launching or will not open; save isolation may help investigate a crash tied to a particular save or point in play.

Check for a Brotato update
Highlight Brotato on the PS5 home screen or in your game library, press the Options button, then select Check for Update. Install an available update and try the game again. PlayStation recommends checking for game updates when a game freezes or crashes: PlayStation: PlayStation game freezes or crashes.

Update PS5 system software
Check the console’s system software update settings and install any available update. PlayStation includes system software updates in its troubleshooting guidance for both crashes and games that will not start. The Store listing also says the PS5 version of Brotato may require the latest system software.

Confirm the game finished downloading and installing
Highlight Brotato, open Options > Information > Download Status, and let any download or installation finish before launching it. PlayStation specifically advises confirming that a digital game is fully downloaded and installed before proceeding with other troubleshooting.

Restart the PS5
Restart the console from the power menu, then open Brotato again. Restarting is one of PlayStation’s suggested checks for a game that will not start: PlayStation: How to troubleshoot issues when starting a game.

Move Brotato to console storage if it is on USB extended storage
If Brotato is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the PS5’s internal console storage and test again. PlayStation lists moving a game from USB extended storage to console storage among its launch troubleshooting steps. This is a targeted check for games that will not start, not a diagnosis that external storage is faulty.

Restore licenses
Use the PS5’s restore-licenses setting, then try launching Brotato. PlayStation includes restoring licenses in its game-launch troubleshooting guidance. Menu labels or locations can change with system software updates, so use PlayStation’s current instructions if you cannot find the setting.

Check whether the existing save is involved
PlayStation recommends testing a game from the beginning without the existing save to check whether saved data may be corrupted. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not proof that the save is the cause. Protect your progress first: do not delete or replace saved data unless you understand what will be removed and have backed it up where possible. Clear the cache and rebuild the database in Safe Mode
For launch problems that persist, PlayStation lists clearing the system software cache and rebuilding the database through Safe Mode. Follow the official Safe Mode and game-launch instructions closely. Choose only the intended cache or database options; do not select a reset or reinstall option unless you deliberately want to take that step.

Delete and reinstall Brotato
If the crashes continue, delete the game and download it again. PlayStation recommends reinstalling a game when crashes persist. Before deleting anything, distinguish the game installation from saved data and verify that your progress is backed up or otherwise safe. Reinstalling the game is not the same as resetting the console.

Escalate according to how many games are affected
If Brotato is the only game that crashes, contact its publisher, Seaven Studio, to ask whether there is a known issue with the PS5 version. PlayStation’s guidance is: “If the issue only affects one game, please contact the game publisher to see if there are any known issues with the game.” If multiple games crash, consult PlayStation Repairs; PlayStation says broader game problems may point to a console issue.
Do not jump straight to a console reset. A reset erases saved data on console storage, so back up your data before considering it. Follow PlayStation’s crash guidance and repair support instructions for the appropriate next step.
Does Brotato crash on launch, or during a run?
For a game that will not open, prioritize confirming installation, restarting, checking storage location and licenses, and then using the relevant Safe Mode cache or database options. For a crash during play, update first, then consider whether the crash is tied to one save; reinstall if the issue continues. These are troubleshooting categories from PlayStation’s general guidance, not established causes specific to Brotato.
When the problem points beyond one game
