bsextendfunc.dll Missing: Fix the Bluetooth Software Safely

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

bsextendfunc.dll is a third-party file commonly associated with Ralink or MediaTek Bluetooth software. If bsextendfunc.dll is missing, Windows is usually unable to start part of an old Bluetooth stack or the application that depends on it.

Before changing anything, work through this short checklist:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Note the exact program or startup item showing the error.
  • Record whether the problem began after reinstalling Windows, updating a driver, removing Bluetooth software, or an antivirus action.
  • Identify the computer model and Bluetooth adapter.
  • Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Look in Device Manager for an Ralink/MediaTek RT3290 adapter or an unknown Bluetooth device.
  • Check the file’s location, publisher, and digital signature before restoring or replacing it.

Do not download an isolated copy of this DLL from a random DLL website. A replacement can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or be the wrong version while leaving the Bluetooth driver, services, and dependent files broken.

What bsextendfunc.dll belongs to

bsextendfunc.dll is not a normal Windows component. It is not supplied by Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Windows itself. Public file records associate it with Ralink Technology Bluetooth software, particularly the BlueSoleil/Ralink Bluetooth Stack used with some Ralink and MediaTek adapters.

The file has also appeared in OEM driver packages for ASUS and HP computers. The strongest connection is with Ralink/MediaTek RT3290 Bluetooth 4.0 hardware, but not every copy of the file can be assumed to belong to that adapter.

Related Bluetooth-stack files may include:

  • bsprofilefunc.dll
  • bscommon.dll
  • bssdk.dll
  • bshelpcs.exe
  • bttray.exe
  • bluesoleilcs.exe

Observed locations include C:WindowsSystem32, a Ralink Bluetooth Stack folder, and folders extracted from an OEM driver archive. Location alone does not prove that a file is genuine. A legitimate installation may use a different folder, and malware can imitate a familiar filename.

Commonly reported wording includes “The program can’t start because bsextendfunc.dll is missing,” “Error loading bsextendfunc.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” The last message is important: it can mean that a dependency of bsextendfunc.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named DLL itself is absent.

1. Identify the program and Bluetooth hardware

Start by finding which software is requesting the DLL.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Ralink, MediaTek, Bluetooth, BlueSoleil, or an unknown startup entry.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location, if available.
  5. Note the folder and executable name. Do not delete the entry yet.

Then inspect the hardware:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Also expand Network adapters and Other devices.
  4. Look for Ralink, MediaTek, RT3290, Bluetooth 4.0, or an Unknown device.
  5. Right-click the device, select Properties, and open the Details tab.
  6. Select Hardware Ids from the Property list and record the values.

To check the Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System and then About.
  3. Check System type under Device specifications.

A 32-bit Bluetooth stack can require x86 files even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not combine files from x86 and x64 packages. The computer model, Windows version, and architecture must all match the driver package.

2. Reinstall the computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth package

This is the most likely working fix. Repair the complete OEM package instead of replacing only bsextendfunc.dll.

  1. Find the computer manufacturer’s support page using the exact model number.
  2. Open the Drivers, Downloads, or Support section.
  3. Search for Bluetooth, Ralink, MediaTek, or RT3290.
  4. Choose the package matching your Windows edition and architecture.
  5. Download the installer from the manufacturer.
  6. Close Bluetooth utilities and other running programs.
  7. Run the installer. If necessary, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  8. Restart Windows after installation, even if the installer does not require it.

For HP systems, documented examples include sp66067.exe, sp70570.exe, and sp71572.exe. These are not universal replacements. Their supported models, operating systems, and architectures differ, so use them only when the HP support page identifies your computer as compatible.

  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail

MediaTek’s RT3290 support information directs end users to their computer manufacturer for drivers. A generic package from another model can install partially and recreate the same missing-DLL error.

If the installer refuses to run or the error remains:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Run the matching OEM installer again.

If the adapter is no longer listed, select Action in Device Manager and choose Scan for hardware changes. If it appears as an unknown device, install the OEM package before attempting to pair Bluetooth devices.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through model-specific driver pages and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan shows what it identifies, while the repair or driver installation is performed by the full version. For this file, however, the manufacturer’s complete Bluetooth package remains the definitive source.

3. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

An antivirus action can leave the Bluetooth installation incomplete.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections related to bsextendfunc.dll, Ralink, MediaTek, BlueSoleil, or the Bluetooth installer.
  5. Expand a detection to view its path and details.

Do not restore the file automatically. Restore or allow it only when all of the following are true:

  • It is inside the expected OEM or Bluetooth installation folder.
  • The file came from the manufacturer’s installer.
  • Its digital signature and publisher are consistent with the package.
  • A scan does not identify suspicious behavior.

If the file is in a temporary, Downloads, or randomly named writable folder, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. An old legitimate filename can still be used by an unwanted or malicious replacement.

After restoring a verified file, reinstall the complete OEM Bluetooth package rather than relying on the restored DLL alone.

  • What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)

4. Verify the file instead of trusting its name

To inspect an existing copy:

  1. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. Open the Details tab.
  3. Check the description, product information, and file version.
  4. Open Digital Signatures.
  5. Select the signature and choose Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

There is no single confirmed universal size, version, or hash for bsextendfunc.dll. Public records describe different samples and separate x86 and amd64 package trees. Compare the file with the exact OEM package for your computer rather than with a number found on a file-indexing page.

A copy in System32 is not automatically malicious, and a file without useful descriptive metadata is not automatically safe. Provenance, location, signature, and the surrounding installation matter together.

5. Repair Windows components when other errors are present

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party Ralink DLL, so use them when Windows has broader corruption, update failures, or several unrelated system errors.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test Bluetooth again.

If DISM reports that it could not repair the image, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat the commands. If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, test the original application or Bluetooth utility. If both commands complete successfully but the DLL error remains, return to the OEM driver package rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeating SFC and DISM easier by showing what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the program or Bluetooth package remains the definitive fix for a missing third-party DLL.

6. Use System Restore after a recent driver change

System Restore is useful when Bluetooth worked immediately before a driver or software installation.

  1. Press Windows key, type restore, and open Create a restore point.
  2. Select System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore and restart.

System Restore changes system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with a clean OEM driver installation.

Why copying the DLL or using regsvr32 usually fails

Copying bsextendfunc.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 is not a proper repair. It can introduce:

  • Plug and Play: The Bluetooth receiver is developed for Windows systems only and does not support other systems. No driver installation is required under Windows 11/10/8.1. NOTE: Linux and MacOS , Win 7 System are NOT supported.
  • A wrong x86 or x64 architecture
  • A version mismatch with the Bluetooth stack
  • Missing dependent DLLs
  • Incorrect services or driver registration
  • DLL search-order and preloading risks

Windows may search the application folder and system directories according to defined rules. An arbitrary copy can therefore mask the original problem or cause another application to load an unsafe file.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering OLE, ActiveX, and COM libraries that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A Bluetooth runtime or support DLL may not provide that entry point. Even if regsvr32 reports success, it will not install the missing driver package, services, dependencies, or device configuration.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires registering that particular DLL.

When the RT3290 is no longer reliable

Some RT3290 systems do not work reliably on newer Windows 10 builds, and the adapter may disappear from Device Manager. Windows 11 can be an even poorer fit for hardware whose manufacturer no longer supplies a compatible package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling the correct OEM package does not restore the adapter:

  1. Check Device Manager for the hardware ID and error code.
  2. Install all available manufacturer firmware, chipset, and Bluetooth updates.
  3. Test the last operating system and driver combination supported by the computer manufacturer.
  4. Consider replacing the internal or external Bluetooth hardware if the adapter repeatedly disappears.
  5. Remove obsolete Ralink or BlueSoleil startup software if the old hardware is no longer used.

If Bluetooth is working through newer hardware, uninstalling the obsolete stack is preferable to leaving a broken startup entry that continues to request bsextendfunc.dll.

Final verification checklist

The repair is complete when:

  • The original program starts without the DLL message.
  • The Ralink or MediaTek adapter appears normally in Device Manager.
  • Bluetooth can be turned on and devices can be paired.
  • The OEM package appears in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, when applicable.
  • No startup entry points to a deleted Ralink or BlueSoleil folder.
  • The installed DLL is in the expected package location and has been checked for signature and provenance.
  • Windows Security shows no unresolved quarantine action.

If the error continues, record the exact message, executable name, DLL path, computer model, hardware ID, Windows architecture, Device Manager status, and OEM package used. Those details distinguish a missing dependency from a wrong package, damaged installation, antivirus quarantine, malware replacement, or hardware that is no longer supported.

FAQ

Is bsextendfunc.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is a third-party DLL associated most strongly with Ralink/MediaTek Bluetooth software and the BlueSoleil/Ralink Bluetooth Stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it part of Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No confirmed association places it in those Microsoft runtimes. Installing them is not the normal fix for this error.

Can I download the DLL by itself?

Do not do so. The correct repair is the complete Bluetooth package supplied for the exact computer model and Windows architecture.

Does every bsextendfunc.dll belong to an RT3290 adapter?

No. RT3290 is a prominent association, but the file has appeared in broader Ralink Bluetooth software and OEM packages.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?

A dependency may be missing, the architecture may be wrong, or the installation may be incomplete. Check the complete driver package rather than copying another DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32 bsextendfunc.dll?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs, not ordinary Bluetooth support libraries.

What if Bluetooth hardware is no longer installed?

Uninstall the obsolete Ralink or BlueSoleil software and remove its startup entry. This prevents Windows from trying to load a component for hardware you no longer use.
