Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before downloading anything, write down:
- Which program or game shows the error
- When it happens, such as at startup, after an update, or when opening a particular file
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the message names

The exact program that installed this DLL cannot be identified from the filename alone. Several unrelated applications can use the same framework, and the name does not contain a publisher or product name.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that needs the DLL
This is the fastest and most reliable fix.
Find the owning application
- Read the complete error window and note the program name.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path.
- Note the executable’s folder and the publisher shown in the shortcut or file properties.
- If you do not have a shortcut, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the program that fails to start.
You can also search File Explorer for wxmsw30u_qa_vc_custom.dll. If a copy exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect Location, Details, and Digital Signatures. A normal copy is usually beside the application executable or in that program’s private runtime folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32.
Use the application’s repair feature
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the affected program.

- Back up application-specific saves or settings if necessary.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application publisher’s official website or use the original launcher.
- Install it into its normal folder.
- Start the program once before restoring custom files.
A clean reinstall is especially important after a failed update, interrupted installation, cleanup utility, manual deletion, or a security product removing part of the application.
If the installer cannot write files, right-click the official installer and select Run as administrator. Also check that the destination drive has free space and that the installation folder is not read-only or controlled by an overly restrictive security policy.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender and other antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed or quarantined the DLL. Quarantine is a possible cause, not proof that the file is malicious.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Check the path and filename.
- If the item clearly belongs to the trusted application installation, follow the available restore or allow option.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward so the complete installation is restored consistently.
Do not restore a copy from a temporary folder or an unfamiliar system location merely because its name matches. If the detection is unclear, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and obtain a fresh copy through the application’s official installer.
If the file disappears again after reinstalling, check the antivirus event details and contact the application publisher before creating an exclusion. An exclusion can reduce protection and should not be used to make an untrusted DLL run.
Fix 3: Treat “specified module could not be found” as a dependency problem
These messages do not always mean the named DLL itself is absent:
- “The program can’t start because wxmsw30u_qa_vc_custom.dll is missing”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wxmsw30u_qa_vc_custom.dll was not found”
- “Error loading wxmsw30u_qa_vc_custom.dll. The specified module could not be found”
When the file exists beside the application executable but Windows still reports that the module cannot be found, one of its dependencies may be missing. Windows loads DLL dependencies according to its documented search order, beginning with locations associated with the application.
Look for a second error naming a file such as MSVCR, MSVCP, or VCRUNTIME, or inspect the application’s installation log. A reputable dependency-analysis utility can also show which imported module is unavailable. Use the result to identify the missing component rather than replacing files at random.

- Identify whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install the matching package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- For a 32-bit application, use Microsoft’s official x86 Redistributable.
- For a 64-bit application, use Microsoft’s official x64 Redistributable.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Older applications may require a legacy Visual C++ 2010, 2012, 2013, or another release listed on Microsoft’s Redistributable page. Newer packages do not replace every older runtime in every application. Install only the architecture and release indicated by the application or dependency error.
The Visual C++ Redistributable does not install wxmsw30u_qa_vc_custom.dll. It can repair a missing Microsoft runtime dependency, but the wxWidgets DLL must come from the application’s own installer.
Fix 4: Check the architecture and wxWidgets build
A 32-bit application needs 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. The absence of x64 in this filename points toward a conventional 32-bit build, but do not use the filename as the only architecture check.

Check the application’s documentation, installer package, or executable with a trusted file-inspection or dependency-analysis utility. Confirm all of these match:
- Application architecture
- wxWidgets version family
- Unicode or non-Unicode build
- Microsoft Visual C++ or MinGW compiler family
- Release or debug build
- Vendor suffix and other build configuration
A release u DLL is not automatically interchangeable with a debug, ANSI, x64, MinGW, different-version, or differently configured wxWidgets build.
Do not place separate x86 and x64 copies into arbitrary folders. Windows uses the 32-bit compatibility system for 32-bit programs, but that does not make an x64 application DLL suitable for an x86 program. Let the application installer place its private runtime files.
Fix 5: Update the application and, only if indicated, its drivers
First check the application’s launcher or publisher for an update. An update may replace a damaged runtime and correct an incomplete package.

Drivers are not the normal source of this particular wxWidgets error, but a graphics or chipset problem can cause a program to fail after its DLL has been restored. To check them:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and System devices.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver when available.

Do not use Device Manager to search for wxmsw30u_qa_vc_custom.dll; it is an application library, not a hardware driver.
Fix 6: Use Windows component repair only for wider Windows problems
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They normally do not recreate a third-party wxWidgets DLL omitted from an application installation.

Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as multiple built-in applications failing, damaged system features, or installers failing across unrelated programs.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
A message that no integrity violations were found means these checks did not find a repairable protected-system problem. It does not prove that the application’s wxWidgets files are correct.

Do not copy the DLL to System32 or register it
Do not download a “latest” copy from a random DLL download site. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, use a different wxWidgets build, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also conceal the original installation problem.
Do not copy this file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An arbitrary folder added to the system PATH
The normal location is beside the application executable or inside that application’s runtime directory. A 32-bit DLL does not belong in a system folder simply because Windows is 64-bit.
Do not run regsvr32 on this file. regsvr32 is intended for registration-aware DLLs that expose exports such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. An ordinary wxWidgets runtime library is not fixed by registration.
Windows Features is also not a general DLL repair method. Open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off only when the application’s own documentation explicitly identifies a missing optional Windows feature. Do not randomly enable features to replace this wxWidgets library.

If reinstalling appears ineffective, confirm that you are launching the same executable you repaired. Also check that the installer has write access and that security software is not removing the file again.
