“The program can’t start because slpts.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “The code execution cannot proceed because slpts.dll was not found,” “Error loading slpts.dll,” or “slpts.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The 60-second answer

slpts.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL described as Sleep Study Troubleshooter. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or ordinary game DLL.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 as a generic fix. The safest repair path is:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run System File Checker.
  4. Check Windows Security quarantine.
  5. If repair still fails, use a matching Windows repair source, System Restore, or Windows Recovery Environment.

The filename has been associated with Windows 8.1 and some early Windows 10 inventories. Public documentation does not establish whether every current Windows 11 build still contains it, so the exact Windows version and build matter.

What is slpts.dll?

slpts.dll is identified in public Windows file inventories as Sleep Study Troubleshooter, with Microsoft Windows as its product association. Historical installations place copies in locations such as:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 on some 64-bit Windows installations
  • Windows component-store locations under WinSxS

The exact location depends on the Windows build and architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not assume that a file from one directory can replace a file from the other.

The file is obscure, and public inventories disagree about historical version and size details. Those old listings should not be treated as a universal download specification.

What the error messages mean

  • “slpts.dll is missing” or “was not found” usually means Windows or an application could not locate the file or one of its dependencies.
  • “Error loading slpts.dll” indicates that loading failed. The DLL itself may be missing, damaged, incompatible, or dependent on another missing component.
  • “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean slpts.dll is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency.
  • “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” often points to a damaged file, wrong architecture, mismatched Windows build, or an untrusted replacement.
  • “A required component is missing” is a general startup message and does not identify the precise cause.

If the message appears only when launching one application, note the executable named in the dialog. That application may be probing for the file incorrectly or may have its own damaged installation.

Likely causes

Damaged Windows component storage

A failed update, interrupted servicing operation, disk problem, or cleanup utility can leave a protected Windows file missing or corrupted. This is the most appropriate starting point for a genuine Windows DLL.

Antivirus quarantine

Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined a file after a false detection, or malware may have replaced it. Check quarantine before restoring anything.

Malware or a fake replacement

A copy named slpts.dll in a download folder, application directory, temporary folder, or unexpected system location deserves scrutiny. Malware can use a familiar Windows filename to appear legitimate.

Architecture or build mismatch

A 32-bit DLL is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL. A file copied from another Windows release can also trigger a “not designed to run on Windows” message.

Application-specific startup behavior

No reliable evidence identifies a particular game or third-party program as the owner of slpts.dll. If the problem occurs in only one application, repair Windows first, then repair that application from its official installer if Windows passes its integrity checks.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Reopen the application or repeat the action that produced the error.

Windows servicing can restore missing protected files and update the component store that later repair commands use.

If the error remains, continue to DISM and SFC rather than searching for a standalone DLL.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies from the component store.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
  2. Restart Windows if DISM reports that the operation completed successfully.

Run SFC

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart and test again.

A message saying Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them is a good result. If it says it found no integrity violations, the issue may involve a missing dependency, quarantine, application-specific launch behavior, or a Windows build that does not contain the file.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, review the servicing log:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and look for references to slpts.dll or related component failures.

Running DISM and SFC manually is useful, but repeated repairs become difficult to track when you do not know which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling an application that owns its own files.

Fix 3: Check the file locations and signature

Use these commands in an elevated or normal Command Prompt:

dir "%windir%System32slpts.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64slpts.dll"
where /r "%windir%" slpts.dll

A result in System32, SysWOW64, or a Windows component directory is more consistent with a system file than a result in a random application or download directory. The absence of a result does not prove that the file is required on your particular Windows build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a copy exists:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Digital Signatures.
  4. Inspect the signer and signature status.
  5. Open Details and confirm that Windows accepts the signature.

A missing Microsoft signature, an unexpected publisher, or a copy outside normal Windows locations is suspicious. Do not overwrite a signed system file with one obtained elsewhere.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving slpts.dll.
  5. Review the detection name, path, and action taken.

If Defender identifies a genuine file as quarantined and you have verified its identity, Microsoft provides a Restore action in Protection History. Do not restore a file while Defender still identifies it as malicious without investigating the detection first.

Fix 5: Repair the affected application

If slpts.dll appears only when launching one program:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the program name and the executable shown in the error.
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Try Repair.
  6. If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  7. Otherwise uninstall the program.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.

Do not copy slpts.dll into the application folder unless the application vendor specifically documents that procedure. No credible evidence connects this filename to a particular Visual C++ package, DirectX installer, .NET runtime, game, or third-party redistributable, so reinstalling those packages is not the normal fix.

Fix 6: Use a matching repair source

DISM may fail with a message that it cannot find source files. In that case, use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible.

The repair command may use /Source and /LimitAccess, but the correct source path depends on the media contents. Do not guess at an image index or substitute a random ISO. If you cannot identify a matching source, use Windows Update repair, official recovery media, or professional support rather than copying an isolated DLL.

Fix 7: Try System Restore

If the problem began after cleanup software, an update, or a system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the error began.
  3. Choose Scan for affected programs.
  4. Review the changes.
  5. Start the restore if the point is suitable.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can change drivers, applications, and system settings.

Fix 8: Repair Windows from the Recovery Environment

If Windows will not boot normally:

  1. Start the computer and enter Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Try Advanced options → Startup Repair.
  4. If necessary, use System Restore or Command Prompt.
  5. Run repair commands against the offline Windows installation only with the correct drive letter and documented syntax.

If recovery tools cannot repair the installation, use official Windows recovery media and select an option that preserves data where appropriate. Back up important files before performing a reset or reinstall.

Should you run regsvr32 slpts.dll?

Normally, no.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command, and there is no reliable public evidence that slpts.dll is a COM registration server.

Running this command is especially unhelpful when the file is missing, damaged, the wrong architecture, or dependent on another missing module:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 slpts.dll

Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.

Should you download slpts.dll?

No. There is no verified Microsoft standalone slpts.dll redistributable or official single-file download package. Random DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not repair the underlying component-store problem.

Use Windows Update, Microsoft repair tools, official Windows installation media, System Restore, or the official installer for the affected application.

FAQ

Is slpts.dll malware?

The filename itself is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system filename. A copy in an unexpected directory, a failed digital signature, or a non-Microsoft publisher is suspicious and should be scanned.

Does Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Normally no. slpts.dll is associated with Windows rather than the Visual C++ runtime. Repair Windows components first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?

Historical Windows installations have used both locations depending on architecture and build. Do not manually choose a replacement based only on the folder name.

Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?

Windows may be unable to load a dependency of slpts.dll, or the existing file may be damaged or incompatible. DISM, SFC, signature checks, and application-specific diagnostics are more useful than copying another DLL.

What if DISM and SFC both finish without fixing it?

Check Protection History, inspect the CBS log, try System Restore, and determine whether the error occurs only in one application. If Windows cannot obtain repair files, use matching official installation media or Windows Recovery Environment.

Do I need to reinstall a driver?

Not as a first step. Driver repair becomes relevant only when broader sleep, chipset, storage, or power-management diagnostics show a related problem. If you do update drivers, use the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official source and match the Windows architecture.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the right package can involve checking hardware IDs and repeating restarts. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, while installation through the full version is optional and not required for repairing slpts.dll.

If Windows still reports the error after component repair, signature checks, quarantine review, and application repair, record the Windows edition, architecture, build, exact error text, and executable that triggers it. That information distinguishes a missing Windows component from an application-specific dependency problem.
