If Windows says BTHport.sys is missing or cannot be found, treat it as a Windows Bluetooth-stack or protected-system-file problem—not as a file you should download from the web. Check %WinDir%System32driversBTHport.sys, perform a complete shutdown, install Windows and manufacturer updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC) from an elevated Command Prompt. If Bluetooth is still detected, reinstall its adapter in Device Manager; if Windows will not boot, use Startup Repair. The filename alone does not identify one cause: component-store corruption, an incompatible driver, firmware trouble, a failed update, a stopped Bluetooth component or hardware-detection failure can all produce similar symptoms.

What is BTHport.sys and why does Windows need it?

BTHport.sys is part of Windows’ Bluetooth host-radio support. Microsoft documents the Bluetooth Port Driver service as BTHPORT, with the normal file location %WinDir%System32driversBTHport.sys. It is a protected Windows driver, not a component supplied by an individual headset, controller or speaker.

When the file is missing, damaged or cannot load, Windows may lose Bluetooth discovery, fail to start the Bluetooth stack, hide the Bluetooth toggle, or report that a driver cannot be found. The same symptoms can occur when the file is intact but a Bluetooth adapter driver, firmware package, Windows update or hardware-detection path is broken. A missing-file message therefore tells you what Windows could not load; it does not, by itself, prove that the file is the original cause.

Is a BTHport.sys error dangerous, and can I download the file?

The safe response is to repair Windows’ component store and protected files through Microsoft’s servicing tools and obtain drivers through Windows Update or the computer maker’s support channel. Do not download a replacement bthport.sys from a random DLL site, rename an unrelated file, or overwrite the System32 driver blindly. An untrusted or mismatched kernel driver can create a second boot or stability problem.

Do not copy the file from another computer as a first step either. Microsoft’s manual-replacement guidance requires identifying the unrepaired file in SFC’s details and using a known-good copy from the same Windows version. In most cases, DISM and SFC are safer and more complete because they repair the component store and protected-file catalog together.

What should I check before running repairs?

These quick checks determine which branch of the repair is appropriate and prevent you from reinstalling hardware when Windows only needs servicing.

What you observe What it suggests Next action
Windows starts normally, but Bluetooth disappeared A state, update, driver or service problem is more likely than an unbootable system Perform the full shutdown, check Airplane Mode, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter, then update Windows and the OEM driver

How do I fix BTHport.sys missing on Windows 11 or 10?

Work through the following sequence in order. Stop when Bluetooth works again, but complete both DISM and SFC if Windows reports protected-file corruption; a driver reinstall alone does not repair a damaged component store.

1. Perform a complete shutdown and power cycle

  1. Save your work and close running applications.
  2. Hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Shut down.
  3. Wait about one minute after the computer powers off, then turn it on again.

Microsoft distinguishes this full shutdown from an ordinary Restart for Bluetooth hardware recovery. It clears a stuck hardware state without changing personal files. If the Bluetooth switch returns after power-on, still install pending updates before assuming the issue is permanently resolved.

2. Clear simple radio-state problems and run the troubleshooter

  1. Open Windows quick settings and make sure Airplane mode is off. If a physical wireless key or manufacturer utility controls radios, enable Bluetooth there as well.
  2. On Windows 11, open Get Help and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter.
  3. On Windows 10, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter offered through Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting flow.

A disabled radio can make Bluetooth appear to be missing even when the driver file is healthy. The troubleshooter may reset a service or configuration, but it cannot replace a corrupted system file; continue to DISM and SFC when the error message remains.

3. Install Windows, optional and manufacturer updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  2. Open Advanced options > Optional updates and review driver updates, including Bluetooth entries, before installing them.
  3. Restart when Windows requests it, then test Bluetooth again.
  4. Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter and choose Update driver. Allow Windows to search automatically.
  5. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, visit the PC manufacturer’s support page and search by the exact model or service tag. Install the current Bluetooth package and any related firmware package supplied for your installed Windows edition.

Use the manufacturer’s package rather than a generic download when the computer uses a customized radio, a combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card or firmware that Windows Update does not recognize. A driver that was current for a previous Windows build can still be incompatible after an update.

4. Check whether the protected file is actually present

In File Explorer, enter %WinDir%System32drivers in the address bar and look for BTHport.sys. You can also open Command Prompt and run:

dir %WinDir%System32driversBTHport.sys

If the command returns a file, the message may reflect corruption, a failed load or a mismatched driver rather than literal deletion. Do not replace a present file manually; proceed with component repair. If it is absent, the same repair sequence restores it from Microsoft’s component sources when those sources are available.

5. Run DISM first, then SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies clean system files. SFC then scans protected files and replaces corrupted copies when possible. Running them in the opposite order can leave SFC without a healthy source.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. After DISM reaches completion, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Let SFC reach 100 percent. Close the window only after it reports a result, then restart Windows.

DISM can appear to pause for a long time while it evaluates or retrieves components; interrupting it can leave the repair incomplete. SFC’s result matters: a message saying it found and repaired corrupt files supports a restart-and-test cycle, while a message that some files could not be repaired means you should review the SFC details and address the repair source rather than downloading an individual file.

6. Give DISM a matching repair source when Windows Update cannot

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a running Windows installation, a Windows DVD or installation USB, or a side-by-side repair folder as Microsoft’s documented source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture and build as closely as possible. A Home image is not a dependable source for a Pro installation, and media from a substantially different build can fail validation.

With installation media mounted as drive X:, a source-based command has this form:

Replace <index> with the image index that corresponds to the installed edition; do not guess the index. If the media contains install.esd instead of install.wim, use the source format appropriate to that media. The important safeguards are the matching build and edition and the use of a read-only source you trust. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow again and restart.

7. Reinstall the Bluetooth adapter through Device Manager

Use this step when Windows still lists the adapter but Bluetooth remains unavailable after system repair.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth. If the adapter has a warning icon, note the exact device name and any error code.
  3. Right-click the adapter, select Uninstall device, and confirm. Do not select unrelated network or audio hardware.
  4. Shut down completely, power on, and allow Windows to detect the adapter and reinstall its driver.
  5. If it does not return, open Device Manager, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes, and then install the exact-model package from the PC manufacturer’s support page.

If Bluetooth is hidden, open Device Manager’s View menu and choose Show hidden devices. A greyed-out entry can represent an old instance left by an update; remove only the Bluetooth adapter entry you have identified, then scan for hardware changes. If no Bluetooth hardware appears at all, focus on OEM firmware and hardware detection rather than repeatedly deleting system files.

8. Use Startup Repair when Windows will not boot

When the computer cannot reach the normal sign-in screen, use Windows Recovery Environment instead of forcing repairs from an incomplete desktop session.

  1. Start the computer and allow Windows to enter recovery after failed starts, or boot from Windows recovery or installation media.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  3. Choose the Windows installation to repair and follow the prompts. Restart when the process finishes.

Microsoft lists missing or damaged system files and incompatible drivers among the startup problems this tool can attempt to fix. Startup Repair is an escalation path for boot failure; it is not a substitute for updating a Bluetooth package once Windows starts normally.

Situation Best next move Why
Windows 11 boots; Bluetooth vanished after a recent update Full shutdown, Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter, Windows/optional updates, then DISM and SFC The update may have left a component or driver mismatch; servicing repairs protected files before hardware removal
Windows 10 boots; adapter appears in Device Manager Install available updates, run DISM then SFC, and reinstall the listed adapter if needed The hardware is detectable, so software repair and a clean driver instance are higher-value steps
Adapter is missing from Device Manager Install the exact-model OEM Bluetooth and firmware packages, restart, then scan for hardware changes Absence from the device list points toward detection, firmware or internal-hardware trouble
DISM says repair files are unavailable Repeat DISM with matching installation media or a side-by-side source, then rerun SFC Windows cannot rebuild the protected file without a valid component source
Windows does not boot Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment The repair must run outside the damaged Windows session

What should I avoid while repairing BTHport.sys?

  • Random DLL downloads: They are not Microsoft’s supported delivery channel for a protected kernel driver and may be mismatched or unsafe.
  • Blind file copying: A copy from another PC can differ by Windows edition, build, language or architecture. Manual replacement should follow SFC’s identified unrepaired-file details and Microsoft’s same-version guidance.
  • Unrelated driver removal: Do not uninstall Wi-Fi, audio or chipset entries just because Bluetooth is unavailable; remove only the identified Bluetooth adapter.
  • Assuming a USB dongle repairs Windows: A USB Bluetooth adapter can bypass a failed internal radio, but it does not restore a missing BTHport.sys or repair the Windows Bluetooth stack.
  • Interrupting servicing: Let DISM and SFC finish and restart when requested. Closing an elevated console mid-operation can leave the component repair unfinished.

What changes for Windows 10 users?

Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That means Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 under the ended support lifecycle. The DISM, SFC, Device Manager and Startup Repair procedures still exist on Windows 10, but a continuing Bluetooth problem is also a reason to check whether the PC can move to a supported Windows release.

Use the Windows version and build installed on the computer when selecting repair media or an OEM driver. Do not apply a Windows 11 package to Windows 10 merely because the model name is similar; the package must be listed for that operating system and exact hardware.

How do I verify that the repair worked?

  1. Restart Windows after the final DISM/SFC or driver operation.
  2. Confirm that %WinDir%System32driversBTHport.sys exists and that Device Manager lists the Bluetooth adapter without a warning icon.
  3. Open Windows Bluetooth settings and check that the Bluetooth control is present.
  4. Test with one known-working controller, headset or other accessory. If discovery fails for every accessory, record the adapter name and Device Manager status rather than repeatedly pairing and unpairing devices.
  5. If the error returns after each restart, save the exact Windows edition/build, the DISM result, the SFC result, whether the file exists, the adapter’s Device Manager status and the date of any update that preceded the failure. Those details let the PC manufacturer or Microsoft support distinguish a component-store problem from an OEM driver or hardware issue.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its 2-day free trial requires no credit card, after which a subscription is required, and results vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information should I give support if BTHport.sys keeps returning?

Provide the exact Windows edition and build, the PC model, whether the file exists in the System32 drivers folder, the final DISM and SFC messages, and whether Bluetooth appears in Device Manager. Also note whether the symptom started immediately after a Windows or driver update; that timing helps separate a component-store issue from an OEM package or hardware-detection problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep using Bluetooth accessories while Windows is being repaired?

If Bluetooth is unavailable, use a wired headset or a USB-connected controller temporarily. A separate USB Bluetooth adapter may provide another radio path when the internal hardware has failed, but it does not repair the missing Windows driver file, so complete the Windows repair as well.

What if BTHport.sys exists but the Bluetooth toggle is still missing?

That result points away from simple deletion and toward a failed load, incompatible adapter driver, firmware issue or hardware detection problem. Check the adapter’s Device Manager status, install the exact-model OEM package and firmware, and reinstall the adapter if Windows still lists it.

Does a Windows installation USB need to match my PC exactly?

It must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture and build as closely as possible; the computer brand itself does not have to match. Choose the image index for your edition and use the media only as a DISM repair source when Windows Update cannot provide the required files.
