btrez.dll: Diagnose the Legacy Bluetooth Error on Windows

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The program can’t start because btrez.dll is missing from your computer” is a Windows loader error. btrez.dll is associated with legacy Broadcom/WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software, so the correct fix is usually to repair the Bluetooth package that installed it.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose the right path before changing anything:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Bluetooth still works, but one old program or startup item shows the error: repair or remove the obsolete Broadcom/WIDCOMM Bluetooth integration.
  • Bluetooth stopped working after a driver change, update, cleanup, or uninstall: reinstall the Bluetooth driver and software package from your PC or adapter manufacturer.
  • The Bluetooth adapter appears in Device Manager with a warning icon: update or reinstall its driver.
  • The adapter is missing from Device Manager: check whether Bluetooth is disabled, then investigate hardware, BIOS, USB, or chipset-driver issues.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: verify the detection and package origin before restoring anything.
  • Several Windows components are also failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, but do not expect those commands to recreate a third-party Bluetooth DLL.
  • You downloaded a loose copy of the DLL: do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64. Remove it and install the complete OEM package instead.

What btrez.dll belongs to

btrez.dll is an application component used by Broadcom/WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software. Computer manufacturers and Bluetooth adapter vendors bundled that software under names such as Bluetooth Software, Broadcom Bluetooth, Dell Bluetooth Software, Lenovo Bluetooth Software, or HP Bluetooth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical historical locations include:

C:Program FilesWIDCOMMBluetooth Softwarebtrez.dll
C:Program FilesDellBluetooth Softwarebtrez.dll
C:Program FilesLenovoBluetooth Softwarebtrez.dll

The exact folder depends on the OEM package. Older installers could also place related files in Windows directories.

This is not a Windows system DLL and is not part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. Historical file listings include 32-bit variants such as version 6.1.0.2200 at about 5.12 MB and version 1.4.2.9 at about 2.69 MB. These are package-specific records, not a complete current version list.

A 32-bit Bluetooth application can need a 32-bit btrez.dll on 64-bit Windows. Do not choose a file based only on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct OEM Bluetooth package

This is the most likely solution because the missing file normally belongs to the complete Bluetooth installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the computer or adapter model

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > About.
  2. Record the device name, model, and system type.
  3. Select System type to see whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > About.
  2. Record the device model and system type.

You can also press Win + R, enter:

msinfo32

and press Enter. Check System Manufacturer, System Model, and System Type.

If the Bluetooth adapter is a USB device, record its brand and model. If you cannot identify it, continue to Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Bluetooth.
  4. Record the adapter name.

If the adapter is not under Bluetooth, check Network adapters, Other devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers for an unknown device.

Download and install the package

  1. Open the official support page for your computer or adapter manufacturer.
  2. Search using the exact model.
  3. Select your installed Windows version when the site offers that choice.
  4. Download the Bluetooth driver or Bluetooth Software package.
  5. Do not download an individual btrez.dll.
  6. Close Bluetooth utilities and other open programs.
  7. Run the downloaded installer.
  8. Approve the administrator prompt.
  9. Restart Windows, even if the installer does not require it.

The package may be named after the wireless adapter rather than btrez.dll. For example, a Broadcom Bluetooth driver can be listed as part of a wireless chipset package.

  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail

Check whether it worked

After restarting:

  1. Open the application or startup item that showed the error.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10.
  3. Test Bluetooth by turning it on and pairing a known device.
  4. Return to the installation folder and confirm that the installer restored its files.

If the installer says the package is incompatible, verify the model, Windows edition, architecture, and whether the package supports the current Windows release. Do not force-install a package for a different computer.

When identifying a matching driver manually becomes difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while driver installation and repair require the full version. For this file, reinstalling the correct OEM Bluetooth package remains the definitive fix.

Fix 2: Update or reinstall the Bluetooth device in Device Manager

Use this when Bluetooth appears in Device Manager but the driver may be outdated or damaged.

Update the driver

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Bluetooth.
  4. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter, not a paired keyboard or headset.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install any offered driver.
  8. Restart the computer.

Microsoft provides the same general Bluetooth driver procedure in its Bluetooth driver support guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall the device

If updating changes nothing:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the adapter.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If offered, select the option to remove the driver software only when you already have the correct OEM installer available.
  6. Select Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.

Windows may detect the adapter and reinstall a driver automatically. If it does not, run the OEM Bluetooth installer from Fix 1.

Roll back a recent driver

If the error began immediately after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  6. Choose a reason and confirm.
  7. Restart Windows.

If rollback is unavailable, reinstall the previous OEM package if you have an authenticated installer or recovery image.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

A security product may remove a damaged, modified, or incorrectly detected DLL. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  • Plug and Play: The Bluetooth adapter is developed for Windows systems only and does not support other systems. No driver installation is required under Windows 11/10/8.1. NOTE: Win 7, Linux and MacOS System are NOT supported.
  • Mini Size: An extremely compact Bluetooth stick that you can leave on your laptop or PC without removing it.The compact size does not interfere with other USB ports. Convenient to carry, no space occupation.
  • What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)

In Windows 11 or Windows 10:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Find the event involving btrez.dll.
  5. Expand it and record the detection name, file path, and action.
  6. Check whether the path belongs to a known OEM Bluetooth installation.

Only consider restoring the file when all of these are true:

  • The file came from the manufacturer’s installer or an authenticated backup.
  • The detection details support a false positive.
  • The Bluetooth package is still required.
  • A clean reinstall is not available.

Reinstalling the complete OEM package is safer than restoring an unexplained file. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its Protection History guidance.

If the problem began after a suspicious download or malware detection, run a full Windows Security scan before restoring anything.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows itself has other corruption symptoms, such as broken system utilities, failed updates, or multiple unrelated errors. They do not normally restore a third-party file installed by Broadcom or an OEM.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.

A successful result means Windows repaired protected components. It does not prove that btrez.dll was restored. Test the Bluetooth software afterward. If the same error remains, return to the OEM package reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC.

If checking Windows components manually is taking time and you want a scan that identifies repair issues, Outbyte PC Repair can show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repairs require the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the Bluetooth program that owns btrez.dll.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent driver change

System Restore can help when the error started immediately after a driver, cleanup utility, or software installation.

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not remove personal documents, but it can reverse drivers and installed software. Microsoft describes this process in its System Restore guidance.

After restoration, reinstall the correct OEM Bluetooth package if the error returns.

What to do if the adapter is missing

A missing adapter means the problem may be larger than one DLL.

Check these items in order:

  1. Turn Bluetooth on in Settings.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Check Device Manager for Bluetooth, unknown devices, or warning icons.
  4. On a laptop, check the manufacturer’s wireless key or hardware switch.
  5. Check whether Bluetooth is disabled in firmware or BIOS.
  6. For a USB adapter, move it to another USB port.
  7. Install the computer or adapter manufacturer’s chipset and Bluetooth drivers.
  8. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.

If no adapter appears anywhere, the cause may be disabled hardware, a missing chipset driver, USB power, firmware, or hardware failure. Replacing btrez.dll alone will not make an undetected adapter appear.

Do not copy or register a random DLL

Do not download btrez.dll from a random DLL website. An isolated copy can contain malware, belong to the wrong Broadcom package, use the wrong architecture, or fail because other Bluetooth files are also missing.

Do not copy it into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders are not universal destinations for application DLLs. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally used for 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components, but application installers may use entirely different folders.

Do not run:

regsvr32 btrez.dll

There is no verified evidence that btrez.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Running it may produce an entry-point error and will not rebuild the Bluetooth installation.

If Bluetooth works but the error still appears

This usually means an obsolete startup entry or old Bluetooth integration is still trying to load the file.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
  2. Search for Broadcom, WIDCOMM, Bluetooth Software, or an OEM Bluetooth utility.
  3. Repair or uninstall the package if it is no longer needed.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. If the message appears during startup, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  6. Select Startup apps in Windows 11, or the Startup tab in Windows 10.
  7. Disable only the obsolete Bluetooth entry you have identified.

If modern Windows Bluetooth works normally, forcing an old suite back into the system may create more problems than it solves.

FAQ

Is btrez.dll a Windows file?

No authoritative evidence shows that it ships with Windows itself. It is associated with Broadcom/WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software distributed through computer and adapter manufacturers.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not specifically for this file. There is no verified connection between btrez.dll and the Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. Install those runtimes only when a particular application independently requires them.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is btrez.dll always 32-bit?

The available historical listings strongly favor 32-bit variants, but they do not establish a complete vendor archive. Match the file to the application and OEM package, not just to the Windows architecture.

Will SFC restore it?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. btrez.dll is a third-party Bluetooth application file, so the OEM installer is the appropriate repair source.

What if the error started after Windows Update?

Treat the update as a possible trigger, not proof of a file-specific Windows defect. Reinstall the OEM package, check for a newer manufacturer driver, and use driver rollback or System Restore if the timing matches.

Is the file safe?

Safety depends on the exact file’s origin, signature, hash, and installation context. A file from a known OEM installer is more trustworthy than an isolated download, but antivirus detections should still be investigated.
