Build around Zoroark as an off-meta pressure piece, not as your team’s bulk anchor. The most defensible starting point is a Great League Zoroark near 1/15/15 IVs at level 21.5 and 1,496 CP, running Sucker Punch, Foul Play and Sludge Bomb. Then add one genuinely bulky answer to Fighting and Bug pressure and a second Pokémon that can absorb or punish Steel and Fire threats. That structure gives Zoroark the shields, alignment and energy advantage it needs to matter without pretending it is a hidden meta staple.
The current Pokémon GO Hub database places Zoroark at #661 of 1,154 Great League Pokémon, with a PvPoke score of 71 and a D tier. In other words, this is a technical spice pick: rewarding when opponents are unprepared, but highly dependent on team construction and battle conditions.

What does Zoroark contribute in Great League?
Zoroark is a Dark-type glass cannon. Its typing lets it pressure Psychic- and Ghost-type opponents while resisting Psychic, Dark and Ghost damage. The trade-off is severe: Bug, Fairy and Fighting attacks exploit it, and its low durability means a bad alignment can end a battle before its charged-move plan develops.
That profile determines the team-building brief. Zoroark should usually be the Pokémon that converts shields or an energy lead into fast pressure, while its partners handle repeated neutral damage and the matchups that force it out. It is not a reliable safe switch by itself, and it should not be asked to absorb several unshielded charged moves.

The current database lists Galarian Corsola, Altaria, Shadow Forretress, Talonflame and Defense Deoxys among Zoroark’s notable wins. Its listed problem matchups include Melmetal, Shadow Ninetales, Tinkaton, Cramorant and Mimikyu. Those examples are more useful than a generic “cover its weaknesses” instruction: your two partners need practical answers to those kinds of threats, not merely different typings on paper.
What IVs and CP should a Great League Zoroark have?
The current benchmark is approximately 1/15/15 IVs, level 21.5 and 1,496 CP. Pokémon GO Hub lists the resulting effective stats at about 155.47 Attack, 87.96 Defense and 105 HP. PikaStat independently identifies the same top stat-product spread and labels Zoroark an off-meta Great League option.
That spread is a target, not a universal law. The database notes that the highest stat product can lose to a spread that reaches a particular breakpoint or wins Charged Attack Priority. If you already own a different low-Attack Zorua, compare its actual CP, bulk and matchup outcomes in a simulator before discarding it. A one-point ranking difference is less important than whether your team survives the specific attacks it is built to face.
How to check your candidate
- Appraise several Zorua and keep candidates with low Attack and high Defense and HP.
- Power the candidate only after checking the level and CP needed to remain under the 1,500 Great League limit.
- Enter the exact IVs and level into a current stat-product or battle simulator.
- Check whether a different spread changes a key matchup, tie, or Charged Attack Priority result for your intended team.
Do not spend resources solely because 1/15/15 is described as “perfect.” It is the current benchmark for general stat product, while breakpoint-sensitive teams can reasonably choose another spread.
What is Zoroark’s best Great League moveset?
The default recommendation is Sucker Punch with Foul Play and Sludge Bomb. Pokémon GO Hub’s October 9, 2026 analysis lists Sucker Punch at 4.0 damage per turn, 3.5 energy per turn and a 1.0-turn cooldown. The database marks Sucker Punch as legacy or event-exclusive, so verify that your Zoroark can learn it before using an Elite TM.
| Move | Trainer Battle data or role | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Sucker Punch | 4.0 damage per turn; 3.5 energy per turn; 1.0-turn cooldown | Default recommendation when available; stronger direct Dark fast-move pressure |
| Shadow Claw | Alternative fast move with different energy and matchup pacing | Test when earlier charged moves or particular alignment flips matter more than Sucker Punch’s fast-move pressure |
| Foul Play | 65 damage, 40 energy | Lower-cost Dark pressure and the usual first charged move |
| Sludge Bomb | 80 damage, 50 energy | Default second move for Fairy coverage |
| Flamethrower | Higher-cost coverage move; 55 energy in the cited analysis | Specialized choice for targets such as Tinkaton, Forretress or Sableye when your team can afford the slower pacing |
Foul Play gives Zoroark a comparatively dependable way to cash in energy without waiting for an expensive nuke. Sludge Bomb is the broad-coverage partner because Fairy Pokémon are among the types that punish Zoroark most directly. That does not make every Fairy matchup favorable: Zoroark can still be defeated by fast-move pressure before Sludge Bomb becomes relevant.

Sucker Punch or Shadow Claw?
Shadow Claw is a legitimate alternative rather than a strict upgrade. The cited analysis found Shadow Claw outperforming Sucker Punch in several common one-shield matchups, while Sucker Punch gained different wins in shield-down and two-shield scenarios. In the same comparison, Sucker Punch recorded six wins in the shield-down group and 16 wins in the two-shield group that was tested.
Use Sucker Punch when you value immediate Dark-type fast-move damage and the current event or legacy recommendation. Test Shadow Claw when your proposed team needs Zoroark to reach Foul Play or Sludge Bomb sooner, or when a specific lead, switch or closer simulation shows a matchup flip. The correct choice follows your team’s role; there is no moveset that wins every shield pattern.
Is Flamethrower worth the second charged-move slot?
Flamethrower costs 55 energy in the cited analysis, making it slower than the coverage you normally want from Zoroark. It can create value into targets including Tinkaton, Forretress and Sableye, but it does not fix Zoroark’s underlying fragility. Treat it as a targeted answer revealed by simulations, not as a generally superior replacement for Sludge Bomb.
Which roles should Zoroark’s teammates fill?
Your partners should cover jobs Zoroark cannot perform consistently. The most reliable framework is one bulky answer to Fighting and Bug pressure, plus one sturdy answer to Steel and Fire pressure. Both should contribute meaningful charged-move pressure rather than existing only as passive type counters.

Partner slot one: a bulky Fighting and Bug answer
Fighting and Bug attacks exploit Zoroark’s Dark typing. Start with a Fairy- or Flying-oriented role, or another bulky Pokémon that can threaten those attackers with its own charged moves. The exact species should come from the current Great League pool and be checked in simulation; the weakness profile does not prove that one named partner is universally best.
This slot often functions as your safer pivot. It should be able to enter a neutral matchup, draw a shield or force a switch, and leave enough health for the endgame. A partner that merely wins one Bug matchup but folds to common neutral damage does not protect Zoroark’s narrow margin for error.

Partner slot two: anti-Steel and anti-Fire pressure
Use this slot to prevent Melmetal, Tinkaton and Shadow Ninetales from becoming automatic losses. A Ground-, Water- or similarly appropriate anti-Steel role is a sensible starting hypothesis, provided it also has enough bulk to handle a switch or absorb a charged move.
Check this slot against Fire pressure as well as Steel. If it beats Steel but loses immediately to Shadow Ninetales, the team has simply moved the problem. The goal is not a perfect type triangle; it is a practical back line that gives Zoroark a chance to preserve shields and choose favorable alignments.

Why at least one partner must be bulky
Zoroark lacks a 35-energy charged move and can be removed before its coverage move matters. Stacking two frail attackers beside it creates a team that looks threatening on paper but collapses when the opponent reaches a neutral fast-move matchup. At least one teammate should be a genuine safe switch or neutral-damage sponge, even if that lowers the team’s theoretical offensive ceiling.
Which Zoroark team shells should you test?
These are role-based starting shells, not claimed live rankings or tournament teams. Select actual species from the current Great League pool, enter their exact moves and IVs, and then inspect the results in PvPoke’s Team Builder.
| Shell | Lead or role concept | Coverage priority | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced pressure | Zoroark preserved for a shielded closer or alignment-sensitive switch | Bulky Fighting/Bug answer plus Ground- or Water-oriented anti-Steel back line | May give up some immediate lead pressure to keep Zoroark healthy |
| Anti-Steel | Sturdy anti-Steel lead or safe switch, with Zoroark used after shields move | Melmetal and Tinkaton answers, plus a closer that survives neutral damage | Can become vulnerable to Fairy or Fighting teams if the first answer is misaligned |
| Coverage | Zoroark with Sludge Bomb supported by two direct counters | One Fairy answer and one Fire/Steel answer | Maximum type coverage, but both partners may be too fragile if chosen only for damage |
Balanced pressure shell
This is the safest starting concept. Keep Zoroark out of repeated neutral exchanges, use the bulky Fighting/Bug answer to absorb pressure, and reserve the anti-Steel slot for matchups where Zoroark’s Dark attacks are poorly aligned. In the endgame, Zoroark can convert a shield or an energy lead into Foul Play pressure.
Anti-Steel shell
Choose this when Melmetal and Tinkaton are the opponents you expect to see most often. A sturdy anti-Steel lead or switch can draw out those Pokémon before Zoroark is asked to close. The third Pokémon should have enough neutral durability that a failed alignment does not force Zoroark to enter with no shields.

Coverage shell
This shell uses Sludge Bomb to threaten Fairy targets while assigning the partners direct jobs against Fairy and Fire or Steel. It is attractive when you want every slot to pressure a defined weakness, but it is also the easiest to overload with fragile attackers. If both partners need shields to function, Zoroark will rarely receive the support it requires.
How do you verify a Zoroark team in PvPoke?
PvPoke’s rankings are estimates and can change as its simulator and game data improve. Use Team Builder and role-specific simulations to identify what your team actually loses to instead of treating one overall score as a verdict.
- Open Team Builder and enter Zoroark with its exact IVs, level, fast move and charged moves.
- Add one candidate for the Fighting/Bug answer and one candidate for the anti-Steel/Fire role.
- Review the overall score, then inspect the lead, switch, closer, charger, attacker and consistency categories separately.
- Open the key-loss list and record whether Melmetal, Shadow Ninetales, Tinkaton, Cramorant, Mimikyu or another common threat is responsible for the weak score.
- Run one-shield, two-shield and shield-down simulations. Compare Sucker Punch with Shadow Claw and Sludge Bomb with Flamethrower only after the team’s roles are fixed.
- Change one Pokémon or one move at a time. If you replace both partners simultaneously, you will not know which adjustment solved or created a problem.
- Recheck the team after game updates or major move changes, because rankings and matchup estimates are not permanent.
Use the simulator to answer concrete questions: Does the safe switch survive long enough to draw a shield? Can the anti-Steel Pokémon reach its charged move before fainting? Does Shadow Claw create a needed one-shield win, or does Sucker Punch’s fast damage matter more when shields are down?
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you play Zoroark during a battle?
When leading
Lead Zoroark only when the rest of the team can recover from an unfavorable opener. Throw Foul Play for dependable Dark pressure, but do not spend both shields simply to preserve a matchup that a partner can reclaim later. If the opponent shows a clear Fighting, Fairy or Bug answer, switch according to your tested plan rather than hoping Sludge Bomb will arrive in time.
When switching
Zoroark is usually a poor blind switch because its low bulk gives opponents little time to make a mistake. Bring it in after a teammate has drawn a shield, forced a switch or secured an energy advantage. The ideal switch creates a decision: the opponent must either spend a shield on Foul Play or allow Zoroark to reach its coverage move.
When closing
Closing is often Zoroark’s most natural role. Preserve at least one shield when possible, remove or weaken the opponent’s Fairy and Fighting answers first, and use its high Attack to turn low-health targets into fast wins. Alignment matters more than raw type advantage; a nominally favorable matchup can still fail if Zoroark enters without shields against a healthy counter.

Managing energy and shields
Do not wait for Flamethrower unless your simulation proves that its target is worth the delay. Foul Play’s 40-energy cost lets Zoroark apply pressure before the opponent can freely farm it. Sludge Bomb is the default second move because it broadens coverage, but the move only helps if Zoroark survives to use it.
What are Zoroark’s biggest team-building mistakes?
- Using it as the bulk anchor: Zoroark is a pressure attacker, not a Pokémon designed to absorb repeated neutral hits.
- Assuming Sludge Bomb guarantees Fairy wins: Fairy fast-move pressure can defeat Zoroark before the 50-energy move becomes available.
- Ignoring legacy access: Sucker Punch is listed as legacy or event-exclusive; confirm availability before committing an Elite TM.
- Choosing partners by typing alone: A theoretical resistance is not enough if the Pokémon lacks a safe-switch profile or charged-move pressure.
- Stacking three fragile attackers: One bad lead or lost shield can remove the entire team’s win condition.
- Reading only the overall simulator score: A team can have an acceptable total while failing badly in the lead, switch or closer role you intend to use.
- Treating the IV benchmark as mandatory: Breakpoints and Charged Attack Priority can justify another spread in a specific matchup.
Is Zoroark good enough for Great League?
Zoroark is playable, but the evidence supports a spice-pick description rather than a meta-staple claim. Its current #661 ranking, score of 71 and D tier indicate a narrow ceiling, while the cited analysis concludes that it remains too flawed to work as generally as players would want. Its value comes from pressure, surprise and alignment—not from forgiving bulk or broad neutral coverage.
Build the team so Zoroark receives shields, energy or a favorable closing alignment. If your candidate partners cannot cover Fighting, Bug, Steel and Fire pressure while providing at least one durable switch option, choose a different centerpiece. If they can, Zoroark becomes a technically demanding but legitimate way to punish Psychic- and Ghost-heavy teams and catch opponents who prepare only for standard Great League cores.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1/15/15 the only good Zoroark IV spread?
No. It is the current highest-stat-product benchmark at about level 21.5 and 1,496 CP, but a different spread can win a breakpoint or Charged Attack Priority tie. Check the exact matchup you care about before replacing a usable low-Attack Zoroark.
Can Zoroark learn Sucker Punch without an Elite TM?
The current database labels Sucker Punch legacy or event-exclusive, so availability depends on the individual Pokémon and future events. Check the move history and in-game eligibility before spending an Elite TM.
Should Zoroark be my Great League lead?
It can lead in a team designed to recover from bad openings, but its low bulk makes blind leading risky. Many teams get more value by preserving Zoroark for a shielded switch or closer role after a partner has drawn out its counters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Flamethrower make Zoroark a Steel counter?
Flamethrower can add pressure against targets such as Tinkaton and Forretress, but its 55-energy cost is substantial and it does not remove Zoroark’s fragility. Use it only when your simulations show a specific matchup benefit that Sludge Bomb cannot provide.
How often should I recheck a Zoroark team?
Revisit the team after move updates, balance patches or major changes to simulator data. PvPoke describes its rankings as estimates, so a team that looks sound today can need a different move or partner after the Great League environment shifts.
