BungeeCord Networks Explained: How to Link Minecraft Servers

BungeeCord connects multiple Minecraft servers behind one authenticated proxy. This guide covers proxy and backend configuration, forwarding, priorities, private ports, security and the most common kick errors.

A BungeeCord network puts one proxy in front of multiple Minecraft servers. Players connect to the proxy once; BungeeCord authenticates them and sends each connection to a backend listed under servers: in config.yml. For a reliable network, leave online_mode: true and enable ip_forward on the proxy, while every Spigot or Paper backend uses online-mode=false and bungeecord: true in spigot.yml. A mismatch between those forwarding settings is the most common cause of kicks.

What a BungeeCord network actually is

BungeeCord is a proxy, not another Minecraft world or a replacement for the servers that host your worlds. It is the public front door for a group of separate backend servers. A player connects to one proxy address, and the proxy opens the appropriate connection to a lobby, survival server, minigame server or another backend.

The arrangement has three distinct responsibilities:

  • The proxy: accepts the player’s public connection, performs Mojang authentication when online_mode is enabled, and chooses a backend.
  • The backends: run the actual worlds, plugins and gameplay. Each backend has its own address and port.
  • The forwarding layer: carries the authenticated player’s UUID, name and IP information from the proxy to the backend. BungeeCord calls this setting ip_forward.

Players should normally expose only the proxy address. Backend ports should not be reachable from the public internet. Firewall rules or equivalent network controls should restrict those ports to traffic from the proxy and the administrators who need access.

How a first connection moves through the network

  1. The player enters the proxy address in the Minecraft client.
  2. The proxy checks the player’s Mojang session because its online_mode is enabled.
  3. BungeeCord reads its server list and priority order.
  4. The proxy forwards the connection to the first available backend in the configured priority list, commonly a lobby.
  5. The backend receives the forwarded identity information and starts the player’s session in that world.

When a player changes server, the proxy performs another backend connection without requiring the player to disconnect and add a new public address. The worlds remain separate: inventories, permissions and plugin data are still controlled by the individual backend servers unless your plugins deliberately synchronize them.

What you need before configuring BungeeCord

Prepare the network as a set of clearly separated services rather than treating it as one large server. You need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • One BungeeCord proxy process that players can reach.
  • At least one backend Minecraft server; a useful network normally has a lobby plus one or more game servers.
  • A different listening port for every backend. Host documentation commonly demonstrates local addresses such as 172.18.0.1 with ports 30000 and 30001; those values are examples, not universal requirements.
  • Permission to edit the proxy’s generated config.yml and each backend’s server.properties and, for Spigot or Paper, spigot.yml.
  • Firewall rules that keep backend ports private while allowing the proxy to reach them.

Do not copy defaults from an old tutorial blindly. BungeeCord configuration defaults have changed or are reported differently between current and archived SpigotMC documentation. The generated files on your installation are the authority for the actual values you are running.

Install and generate the proxy configuration

Start BungeeCord once before making detailed edits. Its first run creates the configuration files, including config.yml. Stop the process after generation, then edit the file and start the proxy again. This two-stage start prevents you from editing a file that has not yet been created and gives you a concrete configuration whose syntax matches your build.

  1. Place the BungeeCord proxy jar in its own directory, separate from every backend directory.
  2. Run the proxy once so it can create config.yml and its other working files.
  3. Stop the proxy cleanly.
  4. Make a backup copy of the newly generated config.yml.
  5. Edit the generated file instead of replacing it with a configuration copied from an unrelated version.

The proxy’s public listener is defined in the generated configuration. Bind that listener to the address and port you intend players to use, then keep backend listeners on their own ports. The exact surrounding listener options can vary by build, so preserve the keys generated by your installation.

Configure authentication, forwarding and server priorities

Three settings determine whether identity and first-connection routing work correctly: online_mode, ip_forward and priorities. They belong to different parts of the generated configuration, so change the existing keys rather than adding duplicate entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Proxy setting Value for the normal setup Purpose and qualification
online_mode true The proxy performs Mojang authentication. This should remain enabled for an authenticated public network.
ip_forward true Forwards the player’s UUID, name changes and IP information to the backend. The current and archived SpigotMC guides disagree about the default, so read the generated file and set it explicitly.
connection_throttle 4000 ms by default Controls the delay applied to repeated connection attempts. Treat 4000 milliseconds as the documented default, not as a universal requirement.
force_default_server false by default When enabled, BungeeCord returns players to the default priority server instead of allowing normal retention of another server. The documented default is false.
priorities lobby by default Lists the preferred first-connection destinations in order. BungeeCord tries the list from top to bottom.

Set online_mode and ip_forward

In the proxy configuration, use the generated keys and make the intended values explicit:

online_mode: true
ip_forward: true

online_mode: true belongs on the proxy. It is the component that talks to Mojang’s authentication flow. ip_forward: true is equally important because it carries the authenticated identity to the backend. If forwarding is disabled on the proxy, or enabled on the proxy but not accepted by a backend, players can be kicked and the backend can see incorrect or changing identity data.

The default for ip_forward is not safe to infer from a search result: the current SpigotMC guide lists true while an archived guide lists false. Check the generated configuration on your own installation and set the value explicitly instead of relying on either document’s historical default.

Define every backend under servers:

Each backend needs its own entry beneath the proxy’s servers: section. The entry includes a name, an address, a message of the day and a restriction flag. A representative structure is:

servers:
  lobby:
    address: 172.18.0.1:30000
    motd: '&1Lobby'
    restricted: false
  survival:
    address: 172.18.0.1:30001
    motd: '&1Survival'
    restricted: false

The addresses above illustrate the local-address and port style used in host documentation; replace them with the real reachable address and port for each backend. The names are the identifiers other proxy commands and permissions use, so keep them short, unique and consistent.

restricted: false allows normal players to connect when the server is selected. If you set restricted: true, only players with the bungeecord.server permission can enter that backend. This is useful for an administrative or maintenance server, but it will look like a failure to players who lack the permission.

Put the lobby first with priorities

Set the priority list to the backend that should receive a player’s first connection, then add fallbacks in the order you want BungeeCord to try them:

priorities:
  - lobby
  - survival

BungeeCord checks the list from top to bottom on first connect. It also follows that order when force_default_server is true. With the documented default of false, players are not forcibly returned to the first server every time; the priority list still controls the initial destination and fallback behavior.

Prepare every backend server

Backend configuration is deliberately different from proxy configuration. The backends must not independently authenticate the same public connection when BungeeCord is handling authentication. For each Spigot or Paper server, edit server.properties:

online-mode=false

Then edit that server’s spigot.yml and set:

bungeecord: true

Repeat both changes for every backend, not just the lobby. A single backend left in the wrong mode can produce inconsistent behavior: one destination may accept the forwarded session while another rejects it or reports a different identity.

Give each backend a distinct port

Do not make two backend processes listen on the same address and port. Assign each one its own port, record the mapping, and use exactly that mapping in the proxy’s servers: entries. The proxy must be able to reach those addresses over the private network. A wrong port or an address that is reachable from the proxy but not from the backend host will appear as an unavailable server.

Vanilla backend servers do not provide Spigot’s spigot.yml. The documented approach for a vanilla backend is to use VanillaCord, a compatibility layer intended for this proxy-forwarding arrangement. Do not apply the Spigot-only setting to a vanilla server and assume it has taken effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart in a controlled order

  1. Stop the proxy and all backends before changing authentication or forwarding settings.
  2. Start each backend and confirm it reaches its normal ready state on its assigned private port.
  3. Start BungeeCord after the backends are listening.
  4. Connect through the proxy address, not directly to a backend address.
  5. Test the lobby first, then switch to every other backend listed in servers:.

Starting backends before the proxy is not a substitute for correct configuration, but it makes a failed connection easier to diagnose: if a backend is not listening, the proxy cannot send a player there regardless of its priority.

Verify the network before inviting players

Use a short acceptance checklist after every configuration change:

  • The proxy starts without a YAML parsing error.
  • online_mode is explicitly true on the proxy.
  • ip_forward is explicitly true on the proxy.
  • Every backend has a unique address and port in the proxy list.
  • Every Spigot or Paper backend has online-mode=false and bungeecord: true.
  • The first name under priorities is the intended lobby.
  • A restricted backend is tested with an account that does and does not have bungeecord.server, so the permission boundary is understood.
  • Backend ports are blocked from untrusted public traffic while the proxy can reach them.

Test identity as well as connectivity. A player should retain the same UUID and name when moving between backends. If your network uses IP-based bans, verify that the backend receives the expected player IP; that is one of the reasons ip_forward must be enabled and matched on both sides.

Troubleshoot the errors that matter most

“If you wish to use IP forwarding, please enable it in your BungeeCord config as well!”

This message points to a forwarding mismatch. Confirm all of the following, in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the proxy’s generated config.yml, set ip_forward: true.
  2. On the affected Spigot or Paper backend, set bungeecord: true in spigot.yml.
  3. On that same backend, set online-mode=false in server.properties.
  4. Restart both the backend and the proxy so neither process is using an old value.
  5. Repeat the test through the proxy address.

The usual cause is not a damaged world or a missing plugin; it is that one side of the forwarding agreement was changed while the other side was left at its old value. Check every backend individually because a working lobby does not prove that the survival or minigame server has matching settings.

The proxy says a server is unavailable

  • Compare the backend’s actual listening port with the port in its servers: entry.
  • Check that the address is reachable from the proxy host, not merely from your own computer.
  • Confirm that the backend process is running and has finished starting.
  • Review firewall rules for the private path between proxy and backend.
  • Check indentation and spelling in the generated YAML; an entry under the wrong section is not a usable server definition.

Players always return to the lobby

Inspect force_default_server. If it is true, BungeeCord deliberately sends players to the first available priority server. If it is false, the priority list governs first connection and fallback rather than forcing every subsequent connection back to the lobby. Also confirm that a plugin or administrative command is not requesting a lobby transfer.

UUIDs, names or IP bans are wrong

Start with the forwarding path, not with player data. ip_forward must be enabled on the proxy, and the backend must be configured to trust BungeeCord forwarding. A missing or mismatched setting can make the backend see incomplete identity information, which then affects UUID-based storage, name changes and IP bans.

A restricted server rejects an otherwise valid player

Check the entry’s restricted flag. A value of true intentionally requires the bungeecord.server permission. Either grant that permission to the appropriate account or set the flag to false when the server should be open to ordinary players.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Security boundaries you should not skip

Putting a proxy in front of a backend changes the trust model. The backend is receiving identity information supplied through the proxy, so the backend ports should not be exposed to arbitrary clients. Keep those ports off the public internet and use firewall rules to allow only the proxy and necessary administration traffic.

Do not solve a connection problem by turning the proxy’s authentication off. The documented architecture keeps online_mode: true at the public entry point and disables backend authentication only because the proxy has already performed it. Turning off authentication at the proxy creates a fundamentally different and unsafe deployment.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
  • Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Likewise, do not publish a backend address as a second public entry point merely to make testing easier. Test through the proxy; otherwise you can accidentally bypass forwarding, firewall restrictions and the authentication assumptions your plugins rely on.

BungeeCord and Velocity: what can be compared here

Velocity is the named modern alternative proxy. The fundamental idea is similar—one proxy in front of multiple backends—but the forwarding mechanisms are not interchangeable. BungeeCord uses the ip_forward arrangement described above. Velocity documentation commonly refers to a forwarding secret and a modern forwarding mode, but those details are not established by the sources used for this guide, so a Velocity configuration should be followed from its own current documentation rather than copied from a BungeeCord tutorial.

Comparison point BungeeCord Velocity
Forwarding method ip_forward on the proxy, with backend support enabled in the server configuration. Uses a different forwarding model involving a secret and modern forwarding settings; exact values are not specified here.
Backend instructions covered by this guide Spigot or Paper: online-mode=false and bungeecord: true; vanilla requires VanillaCord. Not established here; use the current Velocity and backend documentation for the matching mode.
Initial setup evidence The proxy-generation, server-list, priority and forwarding steps are documented above. A complete setup sequence is not established in the available material.
Migration implication Existing backends configured for BungeeCord forwarding cannot be assumed to accept another proxy’s forwarding format without deliberate reconfiguration. Plan a separate forwarding and security configuration rather than swapping the proxy jar alone.

The practical decision is therefore about the proxy and backend documentation you intend to maintain, not a claim that one proxy is universally faster or easier. For a BungeeCord deployment, keep the settings and troubleshooting path internally consistent; for a Velocity deployment, do not mix its forwarding instructions with BungeeCord’s.

A repeatable maintenance routine

Once the network works, treat the generated configuration as an operational record:

  1. Back up config.yml before changing server names, addresses, priorities or authentication settings.
  2. Keep a written map of each backend name, private address and port.
  3. After upgrading the proxy, inspect the newly generated or migrated configuration for changed defaults, especially ip_forward and throttling values.
  4. After changing a backend’s server software, recheck online-mode, the forwarding setting and its port.
  5. Test a real first connection, a transfer to every backend and a return after one backend is unavailable.
  6. Review firewall rules whenever a backend is added or moved.

This routine catches the failures that are easiest to miss in a small test: an old backend with a different forwarding setting, a priority list naming a removed server, or a port opened broadly during troubleshooting and never closed again.

The working configuration in one view

A correctly linked BungeeCord network has one public proxy, multiple private backends and an explicit forwarding contract:
