You can host an Assetto Corsa dedicated server without paying a hosting company, but “free” means using your own electricity, upload bandwidth, hardware and maintenance time. The dedicated-server software is free to install through Steam’s Tools section. Your computer must remain powered on and reachable, and friends outside your home network normally cannot connect until you configure router port forwarding and firewall rules.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Assetto Corsa servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For a small private group, a home-hosted server can work well. For a public server that must be available around the clock, paid hosting buys convenience: an always-on machine, prepared networking and support. The sections below explain the software, ports, setup process, capacity limits and the problems most likely to stop people joining.

What “free hosting” actually includes
Assetto Corsa’s dedicated-server tool is described as free software distributed through Steam. That removes a monthly server fee, not every cost of running a server. The computer consumes electricity, your internet connection carries the traffic, and someone has to install updates, edit configuration files and resolve connection problems.
- Hardware: an existing Windows or Linux PC can host the process, but it must have enough CPU, memory and storage for the server, the operating system and any other services you leave running.
- Electricity: the host machine needs to stay on whenever people expect to race. A desktop left running overnight can cost more than an occasional paid server, depending on its power draw and local electricity rate.
- Internet service: upload capacity is usually more important than download capacity because the host sends race-state data to every connected driver.
- Time: you are responsible for port forwarding, firewall rules, configuration, passwords, restarts and troubleshooting.
Home hosting is normally local-only at first. Devices on the same home network may see the server, while players on the internet cannot reach it until the router forwards the required traffic to the host PC. A changing public IP address can make that reachability less reliable.

How the dedicated server is organized
Install the server tool through Steam
- Open Steam and switch to Library.
- Use the library filter that shows Tools, then locate the Assetto Corsa dedicated-server application.
- Install it on the computer that will remain online. Keep the installation path available because you will need to find its configuration directory.
The dedicated server is separate from launching the racing game itself. You can run the server on a spare PC or on the same computer used for driving, although sharing CPU, memory and network resources can affect both the host and the player.
Use Content Manager or edit the files directly
Content Manager’s Server Manager is the commonly used front end. It lets you select a track and car list, choose the player limit and server name, and start the process without hand-editing every setting. The underlying files remain important when diagnosing a failed launch or a port conflict.
The principal configuration files are in the server’s cfg/ directory:
server_cfg.inicontains server, session, network and lobby settings.entry_list.inidefines the cars or entries available to connect.
After changing a file, stop and restart the server so it reloads the settings. Keep a backup of a working configuration before experimenting with ports or advanced options.

Ports you may need to open
Port numbers in community hosting guides are not confirmed here as an official Kunos specification. Treat the values as common defaults, then verify the actual values in your installation files and server logs. A mismatch between the router, firewall and configuration is one of the most common reasons an internet server appears offline.

For a public listing, the settings commonly named in Content Manager instructions are HTTP_PORT=8081 and REGISTER_TO_LOBBY=1. Your server may use different values, especially if another application already occupies a port. The safe rule is to make the router forwarding, operating-system firewall and server_cfg.ini agree, then confirm the listening ports in the logs.

Router forwarding
- Give the host PC a stable address on your home network, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create forwarding rules from the router’s internet-facing interface to that local address.
- Forward the game port on both UDP and TCP if your configuration uses 9600 for both.
- Forward the HTTP port on TCP if you are using lobby registration or the corresponding Content Manager setup.
- Save the router settings and restart the server. Test from a different network, such as a phone’s cellular connection; testing only from inside the same LAN can produce misleading results.
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding even when the router looks correctly configured. In that case, ask the provider whether a public IPv4 address is available or use a hosting arrangement that supplies reachable networking.
Firewall rules
Allow the server executable through the host operating system’s firewall, or create narrowly scoped inbound rules for the ports the server actually uses. One Linux hosting guide suggests opening UDP and TCP 9600 and TCP 8081 with ufw; use only the protocols and ports present in your own configuration. Avoid opening unrelated services or exposing administrative interfaces to the internet.

Bandwidth and player capacity
Upload speed is normally the limiting resource for a home server. A vendor guide from Red Switches estimates 10–20 Mbps of upload capacity for roughly four to eight players. That is a vendor estimate, not an independent benchmark, and the source does not state a publication year. Treat it as a planning starting point rather than a guarantee.
Actual capacity varies with the number of drivers, server settings, session activity, other devices using the connection and whether the host is also playing. Measure your connection while the household is busy, not only during an idle speed test. Leave headroom so a cloud backup or video call does not saturate the upload channel and cause lag.

A stable connection with adequate upstream capacity is more valuable than a high headline download number.
Practical capacity checks
- Start with a low player limit and invite one driver at a time.
- Watch the host’s CPU, memory, network upload and packet-loss indicators during a busy session.
- Ask drivers whether they see delayed updates, warping or repeated disconnects rather than judging only from the host’s screen.
- Increase the player limit only after a complete race remains stable under normal household internet use.
No published Kunos, Content Manager or independent statistic establishes a universal player count for a given connection. The four-to-eight-player figure should therefore be read as a cautious vendor suggestion, not an official capacity rating.

Making a server visible to friends or the public
Private server for known drivers
For a private group, choose a recognizable name, set a password and share the connection details only with invited drivers. You can keep lobby registration disabled if everyone connects through a known address and port, although the exact workflow depends on the launcher and configuration you use.
Public lobby listing
Content Manager’s Server Manager can register a server with the lobby when the relevant HTTP and registration settings are enabled. Public visibility increases the need for a password policy, clear rules and regular monitoring. It also makes an incorrect port or unreachable address more obvious: the server may appear to start locally while remaining absent from the public list.

The server starts, but nobody outside the house can join
- Confirm the host PC’s local address has not changed; a forwarding rule aimed at an old address will silently fail.
- Check that the router forwards the same UDP/TCP ports shown in the server configuration.
- Confirm the operating-system firewall allows inbound traffic for the server.
- Test from a genuinely external network and check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT.
The server is missing from the lobby
- Verify the HTTP port and registration setting in
server_cfg.ini. - Make sure TCP access to the HTTP port is forwarded and allowed through the firewall.
- Read the server log for a bind error, authentication problem or failed lobby request.
- Check whether another program is already using the selected port.
Drivers connect but experience lag
- Compare actual upload use with the connection’s available upstream capacity.
- Stop cloud backups, large uploads and other traffic during the race.
- Reduce the player limit and test again.
- Check for packet loss or Wi-Fi instability; a wired connection for the host is preferable.
The server will not launch after editing a file
Restore the last known-good backup, then reapply one change at a time. A spelling error, duplicate key or invalid value in an INI file can stop startup. Content Manager can help regenerate a basic configuration, after which you can compare it with your edited files.

Paid hosting is not automatically faster or better configured, but it removes the requirement to leave a home PC running and reduces the networking work. Home hosting is a sensible choice when the group is small, sessions are occasional and you are comfortable maintaining the setup.
Can a free cloud tier replace a home PC?
Vendor articles have mentioned trials or free tiers from services such as AWS, Google Cloud and Oracle as possible places to run a game server. Terms, eligibility, regional availability, quotas and billing protections change frequently, and the cited material does not establish that any of these offers is currently “always free” for an Assetto Corsa server. Treat a cloud trial as a temporary experiment, not a guaranteed zero-cost solution.
