Buying a Used PlayStation 2? Check These Things Before You Pay

Before buying a used PlayStation 2, check that it reads a silver PS2 DVD game, a blue PS2 CD game and a black PS1 disc, then play a game for 15–20 minutes. One successful load is not enough: the console’s CD and DVD laser diodes can fail independently. Also verify the SCPH model and region, test both controller ports and memory-card slots, and account for any missing accessories.

What should I check first when buying a used PlayStation 2?

Start with the exact model number and the console’s ability to read different kinds of discs. A machine that powers on but cannot reliably load games is a repair project, not a working console. If you cannot inspect it in person, ask the seller for a continuous video showing the model label, the disc tests, and a game running; ask how long the console was played, not just whether it turns on.

Use this checklist in order. Bring your own known-good game discs and accessories if possible, so a seller’s faulty controller or scratched game does not confuse the result.

  1. Read the underside label. Record the full SCPH number, including its final digits, and check that its region matches your games.
  2. Check standby and power-on. The standby light should be red; after pressing the power button, it should turn green and reach the browser. Listen for grinding and note any burnt-dust smell.
  3. Test three game-disc types. Try a pressed silver PS2 DVD game, a blue PS2 CD game and a black PS1 disc. Test a DVD movie too if you need movie playback.
  4. Play for 15–20 minutes. Confirm that a game reaches gameplay and continues through a cutscene, rather than merely appearing in the browser.
  5. Check the drive mechanism. On a fat console, open and close the tray. On a Slim, check that the lid closes and registers as closed; inspect any included disc for circular scratches.
  6. Test both controller ports and both memory-card slots. Use known-good accessories and confirm detection in the browser and, for the controller, in a game.
  7. Confirm the power and video cables. Make sure the included power lead or Slim power brick suits the model. If the seller uses an HDMI converter, ask to see the console with a basic AV cable too.
  8. Inspect the shell and signs of repair. Look for cracked plastic, broken lid hinges, stripped screws, heavy vent dust and statements that someone adjusted the laser.
  9. Get the seller’s test and return terms in writing. Ask what disc types were tested, for how long, whether the ports and slots were checked, and whether you can return the console if it fails.

How can I tell whether the PS2 reads games reliably?

Require a multi-disc test that reaches gameplay. The PS2’s pickup uses separate CD and DVD laser diodes, so a successful test with one disc type does not establish that the other type works.

Use the right discs

Test a pressed PS2 DVD game with a silver underside, a PS2 CD game with a blue underside, and an original PlayStation CD with a black underside. These are the three game-disc categories listed in Sony’s SCPH-75000 FF manual. A DVD movie is a useful additional test only if you care about watching movies on the console.

Use discs you know work in another compatible console. Do not accept a burned disc as the only test: it can add another variable and does not substitute for checking original game formats. For each game, look for quiet spin-up, recognition in the browser and a successful load into gameplay. A game icon in the browser alone is not a complete pass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the game running

Let a game run for 15–20 minutes, including a cutscene if one is available. Some fat consoles can fail after warming up even if they read a disc when cold. Watch for freezes, repeated failed reads, unusual clicking, or a need to tilt the console to make a game load. Do not tilt it as a workaround: a console that needs that treatment is not reliably working.

Do not let an open-lid Slim spin a disc you care about until you have checked the orange ribbon-cable path. A ribbon that has shifted into the disc path can scratch discs.

What the failure pattern can mean

What happens What it may indicate What to do as a buyer
Nothing spins A lid or tray switch, spindle, or drive-power fault; it is not automatically a weak laser. Do not pay a working-console price or let the seller label it a laser-only repair without a diagnosis.
CDs work but DVDs fail, or DVDs work but CDs fail One laser diode or the CD/DVD select ribbon may have a fault. Treat the console as having an unresolved drive problem.
A dual-layer DVD game freezes at a particular point A dirty lens or sticky sled may be involved; the symptom alone does not prove a dead diode. Do not accept a single successful boot as a full pass.
The console read discs, then stopped; reset does not help until power is unplugged On some revisions, a MechaCon crash is a concern. Check the SCPH revision and whether the board has a documented fix before considering a repair.
A red message says “Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc” Wrong region or an unsupported disc is common; the message is not, by itself, proof of a dead laser. Verify the game’s region and format before blaming the drive.

A quiet hum as the sled seeks is more reassuring than repeated clicking and pauses. NOSTOS notes that click-pause-click seeking can come from dried rail grease, so that sound is not a diagnosis either. The useful buying decision is whether the console passes the actual disc tests, not whether a seller can name a plausible cause.

Which SCPH model is it, and why does that matter?

The SCPH number on the underside label identifies the revision. Numbers beginning with 1, 3 or 5 are fat models; those beginning with 7 or 9 are Slim models. The final digit generally identifies region: North American examples commonly end in 1, while PAL examples commonly end in 2, 3 or 4. Check the label rather than relying on a seller’s description.

Family or revision What distinguishes it Buying implication
SCPH-10000 and SCPH-15000 Japanese launch fats with PCMCIA rather than the later expansion bay; their DVD player software comes from a memory card. “DVD Player is not set up” on one of these two models can mean the software is missing, not that the drive is broken.
SCPH-3000x through SCPH-3900x Expansion-bay fats outside Japan; early models through 3900x include i.LINK (FireWire). SCPH-390xx is widely cited as the first fat revision vulnerable to the MechaCon crash. Check for the crash-related symptoms and do not assume an older “best laser” reputation guarantees drive health.
SCPH-500xx Fat revision with an infrared DVD remote receiver, 480p progressive DVD playback, DVD±R/RW support and quieter fans; it drops i.LINK. Phone Repair More calls it the strongest fat revision. It is still aging optical hardware, so test it rather than buying on reputation.
SCPH-700xx First Slim family; retains the SPEED chip, allowing an unofficial internal-HDD possibility. It is notably associated with MechaCon-crash risk. Later 700xx boards with MechaCon 6.04 or higher are described as fixed; verify the board revision or fix rather than assuming.
SCPH-750xx and SCPH-770xx The 750xx removes the real PS1 CPU and emulates it with a PowerPC processor. The 770xx firmware restores compatibility for a handful of titles, but otherwise behaves like the 750 class. If specific PS1 games matter to you, check the exact title against the relevant revision; compatibility is not identical across all Slims.
SCPH-790xx The only Slim revision with factory plastic holders for the ribbon cable, which help keep it away from discs. Phone Repair More recommends this Slim for most buyers who do not need a fat’s internal HDD bay.
SCPH-900xx Moves the power supply back inside and uses a plain mains lead. Ribbon holders are removed, so disc-scratch risk returns. Later 900xx units are widely reported as unable to run FreeMcBoot. Verify that limitation if homebrew matters to you.

All fat models have a tray, an internal power supply and an expansion bay; the official Network Adaptor and internal HDD require a fat. Slims have a top lid, built-in Ethernet and no official expansion bay. Most Slims use an external power brick, but the SCPH-900xx returns to an internal supply and plain mains lead. Check which brick is included for a 700xx–790xx console: the wrong or missing one can erase the apparent savings.

There are twelve retail revisions across the fat and Slim families, not simply two interchangeable versions. Phone Repair More reports fat production from 2000–2004 and Slim production from 2004–2013. The shell size is another practical difference: its 2026 guide gives about 301 × 182 × 78 mm and 2.2 kg for a fat, versus about 230 × 152 × 28 mm and 0.9 kg for a Slim.

Will my games work on this PS2?

PS2 consoles are region-locked for games and DVDs. Match the console to the region of your library; a North American console is the straightforward choice for North American discs. A wrong-region disc can produce the “Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc” screen, so confirm the label and disc region before concluding the laser has failed.

A listing that says “plays everything” may describe a modchip or swap modification. Ask what was installed and whether the console still reads original discs consistently. Modified hardware is not automatically defective, but the modification changes what you are buying; collectors may prefer unmodified hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For PS1 games, distinguish region from hardware compatibility. Fat revisions retain native PS1 hardware, while SCPH-750xx and later revisions emulate the PS1 CPU; some titles have compatibility differences. The SCPH-770xx firmware recovers compatibility for a handful of titles, but it is not a universal fix.

How do I test the ports, controller, and memory cards?

Test both controller ports and both memory-card slots with accessories that are known to work. A damaged port or slot may be easy to miss if the seller checks only one side. Sony’s SCPH-90002/SCPH-90003 user guide also warns that some software titles designate a specific controller port, so a game’s instructions may determine which port must be used.

  1. Connect a known-good DualShock 2 to controller port 1. Navigate the browser, then load a game and check the buttons and analog controls. Check vibration only in a title that supports it.
  2. Repeat with controller port 2. Confirm it registers rather than assuming both ports work because one does.
  3. Insert a known-good memory card into slot 1 and check whether the browser sees it. Repeat in slot 2.
  4. If a card appears intermittently, treat the slot as suspect; dirty or damaged contacts can cause unreliable detection. Most games save to slot 1, making that slot especially important.

Original Sony DualShock 2 controllers and official 8MB memory cards have resale value, so count them as part of the deal rather than treating every included accessory as equivalent.

What cables and power supply should come with it?

A fat PS2 and SCPH-900xx Slim use a mains lead; most SCPH-700xx–790xx Slims need the correct external power brick. Confirm the model and included supply before paying. Buyer guides report stability complaints with some cheap third-party Slim bricks, so an included brick should be the right type and work during the full play test.

For video, Sony’s AV MULTI OUT supports composite, S-Video and component AV connections. Sony’s guide ranks the Component AV Cable (SCPH-10490) above S-Video and the supplied composite cable for picture quality. Composite often looks soft on a modern television, but a soft picture is not automatically a console fault.

HDMI requires an aftermarket converter or upscaler. If the seller uses one, ask to see a basic AV connection before treating a bad picture as a console defect; the converter or cable may be the problem. Sony also specifies that progressive-scan DVD playback is NTSC-only and requires a 480p-capable television. Do not assume that every PS2 game or every HDMI converter has the same progressive-scan behavior.

What physical warning signs matter?

Normal surface scratches are mostly cosmetic. Cracks, broken Slim hinges, missing feet, heavy yellowing, stripped screws and thick dust in the vents deserve closer attention because they can signal rough handling, neglect or prior opening. Listen for a grinding fan and inspect the console for a burnt smell during the power-on check.

Smoke exposure deserves particular caution. Sony’s guide says cigarette-smoke residue or dust on internal components, including the lens, may cause malfunction. A console from a smoking home is not necessarily unusable, but its optical condition should not be presumed clean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opening a console is not itself proof of a bad repair: cleaning or replacing a laser requires access to the internals. Ask what was opened, cleaned or replaced, and whether any parts were adjusted. In particular, a seller’s claim that they “boosted the laser” by turning its potentiometers is a warning, not a benefit. RetroTechLab cautions that turning the potentiometers does not restore a worn laser and can overdrive it; assume remaining laser life is unknown.

Is a refurbished PS2 actually tested?

“Refurbished” has no legal definition in this resale market, according to Retro Gaming of Denver. The word alone does not tell you whether anyone opened the console, replaced a worn part, or tested a game beyond startup. Ask for a plain account of the work and a specific play-test.

  • Which exact disc types were tested: PS2 DVD, PS2 CD and PS1 CD?
  • Did each disc reach gameplay, and how long was the console left running?
  • Were both controller ports and both memory-card slots checked with known-good accessories?
  • Was the Slim’s power brick included and tested, and was the video connection identified?
  • Was the laser potentiometer adjusted, and was a MechaCon-related fix made where relevant?
  • What is the return window if the console fails a disc or port test after arrival?

A credible refurbishment description should distinguish teardown and cleaning from replacement of worn parts and a full function check. A wipe-down or a single successful boot is not evidence of a complete test. “Untested” on a console with aging optical hardware should be priced as a repair project.

What is a fair price for a used PS2?

For the United States, PriceCharting’s sold-listing averages, reported on 26 October 2026, put a loose working fat near $112 and a loose working Slim near $107. These are market reference points, not guaranteed asking prices; local condition, included accessories, seller returns and the exact revision change what a particular listing is worth.

Prices checked Nov 2026. Sealed-console prices belong to a collector market and carry reseal risk; they are not a sensible benchmark for a console you intend to play. PriceCharting’s figures are US dollar averages and do not convert cleanly to UK or other local markets, where recent local sold listings are more useful.

Subtract for missing essentials rather than comparing headline prices alone. A listing without a working DualShock 2, memory card, video cable or correct Slim power brick is not equivalent to a complete working setup. A fat complete-in-box unit is also a different product from a loose player, while the box premium is markedly larger for the fat in these averages.

Should I buy a PS2 that reads only some discs?

Only if you want a repair project and the price reflects the uncertainty. “Reads some games” is not a partial pass: it may mean a failing diode, a ribbon or mechanism fault, or a revision-specific board issue. A console that passes all formats at full price is a different purchase from one with an unresolved fault.

Replacement laser assemblies are typically listed at $15–$40 by NOSTOS in 2026; Video Game 911 lists KHS-400C lasers at $15–$45 the same year. Those part prices do not include labor, confirm compatibility with a particular revision, or establish that a laser is the only problem. NOSTOS notes that a laser plus bench time can approach the cost of another working fat console. In Osaka, BunnyCraft’s 21 October 2026 price table lists disc-read repair from ¥8,800 including tax as a lowest-case estimate; it lists disc-scratching or abnormal-noise and tray repairs from ¥5,500, and no-power repair from ¥6,600. These are local service floors, not universal quotes.

There is conflicting repair advice about laser potentiometers: older shop guides, including NOSTOS and an iFixit guide for SCPH-70012, still describe small adjustments, while RetroTechLab and Phone Repair More warn that adjustment does not restore a worn diode and may overdrive it. As a buyer, do not treat a pot adjustment as a repair guarantee or turn one as a test.

The MechaCon crash makes a “just needs a laser” claim especially risky on affected revisions: the drive controller can continue driving focus and tracking coils until they burn, and a replacement laser on an unfixed board may fail again. The issue is associated with SCPH-390xx, SCPH-500xx and early SCPH-700xx consoles; protective PIC modifications exist. Prefer a later revision or evidence of a documented fix if you want to avoid that particular risk.

Which should I buy: a fat or Slim PS2?

Choose based on the hardware you need, not on the shape alone. A fat is the necessary choice for the official Network Adaptor and internal HDD, and it retains native PS1 hardware across fat revisions. A Slim is smaller, has built-in Ethernet and avoids the fat’s tray mechanism, but the exact Slim revision affects disc-scratch and compatibility concerns.

Consideration Fat Slim
Disc mechanism Front-loading tray Hinged top lid
Expansion and storage Expansion bay; required for official Network Adaptor and internal HDD No official expansion bay
Network Network Adaptor is an add-on Built-in Ethernet
Power Internal supply Most use an external brick; SCPH-900xx has an internal supply
PS1 hardware Native PS1 hardware on every fat revision SCPH-750xx onward emulates the PS1 CPU
Disc-scratch consideration No Slim ribbon-path issue SCPH-790xx has holders; SCPH-900xx removes them

For a Slim without a need for the fat’s HDD bay, SCPH-790xx is a practical revision to seek because it has factory ribbon-cable holders. That feature reduces the known ribbon-path disc-scratch concern, but it does not replace the multi-disc test. A fat can be the better fit for HDD use, PS1 hardware compatibility or expansion, but its size and tray condition are part of the trade-off.

How should I decide whether to buy the listing?

Make the decision from the evidence the seller can show, not the adjectives in the listing. A fully tested console with the right accessories and a return option can be worth more than an attractive bargain with no functional proof.

  • Buy as a working console when the region suits your library, all three disc types reach gameplay, the console survives a 15–20 minute session, and the ports, slots, power supply and video output work.
  • Negotiate for missing items when the console passes but lacks a controller, memory card, cable or correct Slim brick. Account for the cost and hassle of replacing each required part.
  • Price it as a repair project when it reads only some discs, has a damaged tray or lid sensor, shows a suspicious red-green-red power cycle, or has no meaningful test history.
  • Walk away if the seller will not identify the model, refuses a basic multi-disc demonstration, or describes intermittent reading as normal.

Retro Gaming of Denver’s concise warning is useful here: an explanation that starts with “sometimes” should lower confidence. The purpose of the checks is not to diagnose every internal fault at the curb; it is to avoid paying for reliability the seller has not demonstrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a PS2 play DVDs as well as games?

Yes. If movie playback matters, include a DVD movie in the seller’s demonstration rather than assuming game-disc tests establish movie playback. On SCPH-500xx, Sony’s listed features include DVD±R/RW support and an infrared DVD remote receiver.

Does a fat PS2 need a separate network adapter?

The fat model has an expansion bay and can use the official Network Adaptor; Slim models have built-in Ethernet instead. The official HDD setup is specifically tied to the fat expansion bay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use component video for every PS2 game in 480p?

Do not infer game support from the console’s DVD capability. Sony’s cited 480p qualification is for progressive-scan DVD playback, which requires an NTSC console and a 480p-capable television.

Is replacing the laser an easy fix?

It depends on the exact revision and the underlying fault. iFixit describes its SCPH-70012 Slim disc-read procedure as moderate difficulty and 45 minutes to an hour; that estimate does not establish the cause of a particular console’s failure or include every model.
