The right used PlayStation 2 is the one whose complete SCPH model number, regional suffix, optical drive, accessories, and return protection match your games and setup. Choose a later fat model such as SCPH-30000, SCPH-39000, or SCPH-50000 if you need the expansion bay and compatible hard-drive ecosystem. Choose a Slim from the SCPH-70000–90000 families if compact size and integrated networking matter more. “Fat” and “Slim” are only starting labels: two consoles in the same broad family can differ in disc behavior, accessory compatibility, and regional support.
Before paying, verify the label, boot a game into playable action, test the controller and memory card, confirm the video connection with your television, and check every included accessory. A power light or browser screen does not prove that a used console is ready for the games you want to play.

| Later fat: SCPH-30000, SCPH-39000, SCPH-50000 | Expansion-bay and compatible HDD projects; classic large chassis | Two controller ports, two memory-card slots, two USB ports, S400/i.LINK, and HDD-by-slot on the covered families | PlayStation 2 and PlayStation software, subject to region and disc compatibility | Oct 2026 |
| Slim: SCPH-70000 through SCPH-80000 | Small footprint and simpler living-room setup | Slim chassis; exact revision and regional suffix determine accessories and storage options | PlayStation 2 and PlayStation software, subject to region and disc compatibility | Oct 2026 |
| Slim: SCPH-90000 family | Late retail Slim hardware with an internal power supply | Approximately 230 × 28 × 152 mm and 35 W for the cited SCPH-90002/90003 guide | PlayStation 2 and PlayStation software, subject to region and disc compatibility | Oct 2026 |
Which PS2 should I buy used?
Start with your required feature, then use the exact SCPH number and regional suffix to narrow the listing. Pick a compatible later fat when an expansion-bay hard drive, the original large chassis, or its two front ports is central to your plan. Pick a Slim when saving space and using built-in networking are more important than expansion-bay storage.
Choose a later fat for expansion-bay projects
The fat label covers many revisions, but the later worldwide families are the useful buying group for storage questions. Sony’s service specification for the covered SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000, and SCPH-50000 families lists an HDD-by-slot connection. Those models also have two controller ports, two memory-card slots, two USB ports, and one S400/i.LINK port.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That does not mean every fat console has identical parts or condition. Ask for the full label rather than accepting “fat PS2” as a sufficient description, and inspect the expansion-bay cover. A missing cover, damaged bay, or undisclosed modification changes the value of an otherwise attractive listing.
Choose a Slim for compactness
SCPH-70000 through SCPH-90000 systems are the Slim families. Their reduced footprint suits a small shelf or travel setup, and Slim systems are the straightforward choice when you do not need the fat model’s expansion-bay ecosystem. The exact revision still matters for accessories, power hardware, and disc-loading design.
The SCPH-90000 family is the late retail Slim family described with an internal power supply. Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 guide gives approximate dimensions of 230 × 28 × 152 mm and approximate power consumption of 35 W. Treat those figures as applying to that cited family and guide, not as dimensions for every Slim revision.
Why the suffix is as important as “fat” or “Slim”
The suffix identifies the regional version. It affects the matching manual, DVD broadcast standard, software behavior, power arrangement, and approved accessories. A seller’s photograph of the rear or underside label is more useful than a generic stock image, because the SCPH number and suffix let you check the correct documentation before buying.
What is the difference between a fat and Slim PS2?
Fat models offer the classic larger enclosure and, on the covered later families, an expansion-bay connection for a hard drive. Slim models reduce the footprint and alter the storage and accessory trade-offs; late Slim units include an internal power supply. Neither shape is universally “best,” because the useful choice depends on expansion, space, networking, and the exact revision.
| Decision point | Later fat families | Slim families |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion-bay storage | Available on the covered SCPH-30000, 35000, 39000, and 50000 families | Do not assume an expansion bay; verify the specific revision before planning storage |
| Physical size | Large original chassis | Compact chassis; SCPH-90002/90003 guide gives approximately 230 × 28 × 152 mm |
| Power arrangement | Depends on revision and region | SCPH-90000 family is described with an internal power supply |
| Networking and accessories | Check the exact model and required adapter | Networking is integrated on the Slim design, but accessory model numbers remain revision-specific |
How do I read a used PS2’s SCPH model and region?
Ask for a sharp, unobstructed photograph of the complete SCPH label. Record every digit and the regional suffix, then match that identity to the manual or accessory list for the same family; do not transfer a list from an SCPH-90004 to an SCPH-90001 or another regional model.
- Locate the label on the console and request a full-frame image if the listing does not show it.
- Write down the entire SCPH number, not just “70000” or “90000.”
- Record the suffix, such as the regional code following the number.
- Compare the model with the seller’s claimed accessories, power hardware, and disc region.
- Ask whether the shown console is the exact unit being shipped, rather than a representative photograph.
A correct model number narrows compatibility; it does not certify condition. The optical pickup, tray or lid, controller ports, memory-card slots, and cables still need individual testing.
Does a used PS2 play my PS1 and PS2 games?
PS2 consoles support PlayStation 2 and original PlayStation software, but the exact disc, region, and console revision matter. Test the actual titles you care about, especially unusual CD-based games, imported discs, or software with known compatibility concerns.

Disc formats documented for the cited Slim guide
Sony’s SCPH-90004 documentation lists PlayStation 2 format DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD+R/DVD+RW, DVD-R/DVD-RW in supported modes, PlayStation 2 format CD-ROM, PlayStation format CD-ROM, and audio CD. This list describes that cited regional family; it is not a promise that every PS2 revision behaves identically with every disc.
Region and DVD checks
The SCPH-90004 guide states that its DVD playback is for PAL broadcast-standard discs. Match the console region, game region, DVD region, and television setup instead of assuming that a North American, European, Japanese, or other console is interchangeable. Ask the seller to demonstrate a game from your collection when possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat a proper optical-drive demonstration looks like
The console should read the disc, pass the browser screen, and reach playable gameplay. A menu alone is not enough: a marginal laser can sometimes display the browser while failing on a particular CD, DVD, or dual-layer disc. Listen for repeated seeking, grinding, or unusual pauses and include those observations in the return decision.
How do I test a used PS2 before buying?
Use a game, controller, memory card, cable, and television input that represent your intended setup. Complete the following checks before the return window expires, even if the seller demonstrated only a power light.
- Verify identity. Photograph or record the full SCPH label and regional suffix. Confirm that the shipped console matches the listing.
- Inspect the enclosure. Look for cracked hinges, a damaged disc tray or lid, missing expansion-bay covers, corrosion, heavy smoke residue, and signs of liquid exposure. Note missing screws or loose panels.
- Check power-up. Confirm that the power indicator responds normally and that the system reaches the browser without resetting or shutting down.
- Test a target disc. Use a game you actually intend to play. Let it reach playable gameplay, not merely the browser or title screen.
- Try a second disc type when relevant. If you need both PS1 CD-ROM and PS2 DVD-ROM titles, test one of each. Include an imported or unusual title only when that is part of your library.
- Test both controller ports. Verify that each port recognizes a controller. Check the D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, analog sticks, pressure-sensitive functions, and vibration where the game supports them.
- Test both memory-card slots. Insert the card, create a save, load it, and delete it. A card that appears in the browser but cannot complete a save is not a usable accessory.
- Verify video output. Use the cable and television input you will use at home. Confirm a stable picture, correct color, and usable audio rather than relying on an included cable’s appearance.
- Check included hardware. Match the written bundle against the actual controller, memory card, cable, stand, multitap, remote, and power hardware.
- Use the return window. Test additional discs and accessories at home before the seller’s return deadline. Keep the listing, photographs, and written accessory list.
This inspection establishes the condition of that individual unit only. It cannot prove a universal defect rate, lifespan, or reliability ranking for every console with the same revision number.
Which memory card works with a PS2?
For PS2-format saves, buy a clearly identified PlayStation 2 8MB memory card and verify that it can save and reload. A PS1 memory card is a different product and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Product | Purpose | Capacity stated by Sony |
|---|---|---|
| Memory Card (8MB) for PlayStation 2, SCPH-10020 E | PlayStation 2 format software saves | Approximately 8 MB |
| Memory Card, SCPH-1020 E | Original PlayStation format software saves | 15 memory blocks, approximately 120 KB; Sony’s guide notes this product is no longer manufactured |
Check the listing language and model marking rather than relying on a generic “PS2 memory card” title. Once the card arrives, create, load, and delete a test save before entrusting it with a long game. Keep a second working card if you need separate saves or want a fallback, but do not assume that an unmarked card has the same capacity or compatibility as Sony’s 8MB product.
What accessories do I need for a used PS2?
A usable basic setup needs a compatible controller, an 8MB PS2 memory card, a video cable that matches the television, and the required power hardware. Add a multitap, DVD remote, stand, or Ethernet cable only when your use case requires it, and check the model number for every optional accessory.

Controllers and memory cards
Make sure the bundle includes a controller that responds in both ports and that its analog sticks, buttons, pressure-sensitive controls, and vibration work where applicable. Confirm the memory card is intended for PS2 saves and complete an actual save test.
DVD remotes
For the cited SCPH-90004 family, Sony specifies DVD remote SCPH-10420 E, which does not include a separate infrared receiver. Do not assume that a remote from another region or model family will be approved for your console.

Sony warns that the SCPH-90004 family should use multitap SCPH-70120 E and that other multitap model numbers may damage the console. The same guide lists SCPH-10090 E Multitap and SCPH-1070 E Multitap as incompatible with that family. Verify the exact suffix before buying a multitap for any other regional console.
Stands and network adapters
Stands and network adapters are also model-specific. The SCPH-90004 documentation lists several stand models and SCPH-10350 E Network Adaptor among incompatible accessories for that family. Treat Sony’s warning literally: “When purchasing optional accessories, be sure to purchase those that are compatible with this model of the PlayStation®2 console.”
Will a used PS2 connect to my TV?
It will connect only if the console’s output, cable, television input, and regional video standard work together. Test the exact cable and input you plan to use; an included cable that is physically present may still be unsuitable for your television.
- Identify the television input before buying and ask which cable is included.
- Confirm stable picture and audio during gameplay, not just the browser.
- Match the console’s regional video behavior to the television, particularly when the unit is a PAL-region model.
- Keep the return option open until you have tested every display mode and target game you need.
Do not treat a modern television’s ability to show one PS2 menu as proof that every game, region, or cable combination will behave the same way.

Can I use a hard drive, multitap, or online features with this model?
These are model-specific decisions. The covered later fat families have the HDD-by-slot connection; a multitap must match the console’s approved model; and online PS2 gaming requires more than an Ethernet cable.
Hard-drive expansion
If an expansion-bay hard drive is your goal, begin with a console whose exact label is in the covered SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000, or SCPH-50000 families. Inspect the bay and cover, and ask whether any parts have been removed. Do not infer HDD compatibility from the word “fat” alone.

Four-player accessories
Buy the multitap only after matching its model number and regional suffix to the console’s documentation. For the cited SCPH-90004 family, SCPH-70120 E is the specified choice, while other listed multitap numbers are incompatible.
Online play
Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 guide says online PS2 games require a network-compatible PS2 game, broadband Internet service, a commercially available Ethernet cable, and an 8MB PS2 memory card. Networking is therefore a specific use case, not a reason to add an Ethernet cable automatically to every bundle.
How much should I pay for a used PS2 bundle?
There is no evidence-based universal fair price for a used PS2. Value changes with the model and region, optical-drive condition, completeness, seller, shipping, return protection, and any repair or replacement risk.
Compare the total usable setup rather than the bare-console number:
- Console with a readable exact SCPH model and regional suffix.
- Working controller.
- Correct 8MB PS2 memory card.
- TV-compatible video cable.
- Required power hardware.
- Optional multitap, remote, Ethernet cable, or stand only when your plan needs it.
- Shipping cost, return protection, and the likelihood of replacing undisclosed parts.
A cheaper console that needs a controller, memory card, cable, and return-risk allowance can cost more to make usable than a tested complete bundle. Because current market prices and defect rates vary, avoid treating one listing or one revision as a fixed price benchmark.
What are the most common used-PS2 listing mistakes?
- Only “fat” or “Slim” is shown: request the full SCPH label and suffix.
- The seller shows a power light: require playable gameplay with a target disc.
- A generic memory card is included: verify that it is an 8MB PS2 card and test a save.
- “Includes multitap” is treated as a bonus: check the exact model because an incompatible multitap can damage the console.
- The bundle uses stock photographs: ask for photographs of the actual label, ports, disc mechanism, cables, and included accessories.
- Region is omitted: confirm game, DVD, television, and console-region compatibility.
- Expansion is assumed from the fat shape: verify that the exact fat family has the HDD-by-slot connection and that the bay is intact.
- The return policy is vague: obtain written terms that allow additional discs and accessories to be tested at home.
Which used PS2 is the best fit for each buyer?
For an expansion-bay project
Look for a tested SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000, or SCPH-50000 family unit with an intact bay, readable label, working optical drive, and clear return terms. Confirm the exact regional suffix before ordering related hardware.

For a compact shelf or travel setup
Choose a tested Slim, then verify its revision, internal or external power arrangement, disc lid or tray, and cable requirements. The SCPH-90000 family is the late retail Slim group described with an internal power supply, but the cited dimensions and power figure apply to the SCPH-90002/90003 guide.
For a PS1 and PS2 disc library
Prioritize optical-drive testing with the actual CD-ROM and DVD-ROM titles you plan to play. Confirm region compatibility and test saving with an 8MB PS2 memory card.

For four-player gaming
Buy the console and multitap as a verified pair. Match the multitap’s exact model and suffix to the console’s documentation instead of assuming that every PS2 multitap is safe.
For online PS2 games
Confirm that the console is network-compatible, then budget for broadband service, a commercially available Ethernet cable, a network-compatible game, and an 8MB PS2 memory card. Do not add networking hardware unless that is part of your intended use.

How we picked the buying criteria
The criteria prioritize the decisions that can make a used console unusable for a buyer’s specific plan: exact SCPH identity and region, expansion-bay availability, optical-drive performance with target discs, controller and memory-card function, television compatibility, accessory model numbers, networking requirements, physical condition, bundle completeness, and return protection. They do not assign a universal “best” revision because the available specifications do not establish a statistically validated reliability ranking, expected lifespan, defect rate, or current average used price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an 8MB PS2 memory card enough for normal saves?
Sony identifies the SCPH-10020 E as an approximately 8MB card for PlayStation 2 software. The practical question is whether the card can complete a save and reload; test it before relying on it, and use another card when you need separate libraries or a backup.
Do I need an Ethernet cable if my PS2 has networking?
Only if you intend to use online PS2 games. Sony’s requirements also include a network-compatible game, broadband Internet service, and an 8MB PS2 memory card, so an Ethernet cable is not an automatic requirement for offline play.
Can a replacement DVD remote work with every Slim PS2?
No. Remote compatibility follows the exact model and region. Sony specifies SCPH-10420 E for the cited SCPH-90004 family, so check the matching manual instead of assuming a remote sold for another Slim revision is suitable.
What should I do if the seller cannot show the SCPH label?
Treat the listing as unverified and ask for a clear photograph before paying. Without the complete model and regional suffix, you cannot reliably check disc-region behavior, power hardware, expansion options, or accessory compatibility.
