On the published figures, yes—but only as headline arithmetic. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma was reported on October 26, 2026, saying the Call of Duty franchise had passed $40 billion in lifetime revenue. Forbes values the Los Angeles Lakers at $12.5 billion for 2026, so three such valuations total about $37.5 billion. The apparent difference is roughly $2.5 billion. That does not mean the franchise has $2.5 billion in cash, or that a Lakers purchase could happen at the valuation shown.

How much money has Call of Duty made?

The latest public milestone is more than $40 billion in lifetime franchise revenue. Inven Global reported the figure on October 26, 2026, quoting an Asha Sharma post describing a “celebrated Call of Duty game” and “$40B in lifetime franchise revenue.” The report did not provide an accounting period, audited statement or a product-by-product breakdown.

That total can cover the franchise’s full commercial history across premium releases, downloadable content, Warzone, mobile products, in-game purchases, platforms and licensing, but the cited report does not specify the mix. “Revenue” is money generated from sales and other commercial activity over time; it is not the same as profit, free cash flow or money sitting in a bank account.

Unit sales show a separate measure of scale. Activision Blizzard said in October 2024 that Call of Duty had sold more than 500 million copies, a figure reported by The Washington Post. Copies sold do not directly translate into the $40 billion total because the franchise also earns from recurring spending and other products, while retail prices, platform fees and regional pricing affect how much revenue each sale produces.

For context, Activision said in December 2020 that the franchise generated $3 billion in net bookings over the preceding 12 months. That was a one-year historical bookings figure, not a lifetime total and not a current annual run rate.

What is the Lakers worth right now?

Forbes’ 2026 valuation table puts the Los Angeles Lakers at $12.5 billion. The same table lists $10 billion for 2025 and $7.1 billion for 2024, illustrating how quickly published sports-team estimates can move.

Forbes defines its team-value figure using the current arena deal and without deducting debt. It is therefore an estimate of enterprise value under that methodology, not a guaranteed price that an owner would accept in a transaction. A buyer could face a different negotiated price depending on control rights, liabilities, league economics, tax considerations and the seller’s willingness to sell.

Could $40 billion buy the Lakers three times?

Using the two headline figures on the same 2026 time frame, the calculation is straightforward:

Item Figure How it is derived
Reported lifetime Call of Duty revenue More than $40 billion Asha Sharma statement reported by Inven Global, October 2026
Forbes 2026 Lakers valuation $12.5 billion Forbes valuation table
Three Lakers valuations About $37.5 billion $12.5 billion × 3
Headline difference About $2.5 billion $40 billion − $37.5 billion

So the phrase “bought the Lakers three times over” is numerically plausible when comparing lifetime revenue with three times an estimated team value. Because the revenue was reported as more than $40 billion, the arithmetic headroom is at least approximately $2.5 billion before considering any changes in either estimate.

Is the “cash to spare” part literal?

No. The comparison combines different financial concepts. Lifetime revenue is cumulative money generated by a franchise before expenses, taxes, platform shares, marketing, development costs, overhead and other deductions. It says nothing by itself about cumulative profit or current cash reserves.

The Lakers figure is an estimated value, not a cash purchase quote. Forbes’ “without deduction for debt” methodology also means the number is not equivalent to the amount a buyer would necessarily wire to acquire every economic interest in the team. A real purchase would require a willing seller, financing, due diligence, tax planning, league approval and a negotiated price.

There is no cited audited public figure for Call of Duty’s standalone cumulative cash profit or cash balance. Calling the $2.5 billion difference “cash to spare” is therefore attention-grabbing shorthand, not an accounting conclusion.

What does Microsoft’s Activision deal tell us?

Microsoft’s 2025 annual report records a $75.4 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, primarily in cash. That transaction provides a corporate benchmark, but it was for the entire company—not for Call of Duty alone. Activision Blizzard included other franchises, studios, technology, intellectual property and obligations, so the deal value cannot be assigned directly to the shooter series.

It also shows why franchise revenue and company purchase price should not be treated as interchangeable. Buyers price expected future earnings, assets, liabilities, strategic value and control, while revenue is only one line in the economic story.

What should readers take from the comparison?

  • The scale is real: a reported lifetime revenue milestone above $40 billion places Call of Duty among the most financially significant entertainment franchises.
  • The three-times calculation works on paper: three Forbes 2026 Lakers estimates equal about $37.5 billion.
  • The surplus is not cash: roughly $2.5 billion is the difference between a revenue total and a valuation estimate.
  • The numbers are time-sensitive: Forbes’ Lakers estimate changed from $7.1 billion in 2024 to $10 billion in 2025 and $12.5 billion in 2026.
  • The accounting detail is incomplete: the reported $40 billion statement does not disclose periods, margins or the contributions of individual products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the $40 billion include Warzone and in-game purchases?

The cited report does not break the milestone into premium games, Warzone, mobile, in-game purchases or licensing. It presents a lifetime franchise total, so the exact contribution of each category is not publicly specified there.

Who owns the Call of Duty franchise?

Call of Duty is part of Activision Blizzard, which Microsoft acquired in a 2025 transaction. The acquisition covered the whole publisher rather than transferring a separately priced Call of Duty business.

Can an NBA team simply be bought for its Forbes valuation?

No. A valuation is an analytical estimate. Any sale depends on an owner agreeing to negotiate, the package of assets and liabilities, league rules, financing and the final contract terms.

Why are lifetime revenue and profit so different?

Revenue is the money collected from customers and partners before costs and deductions. Profit requires subtracting expenses such as development, marketing, platform fees, taxes and corporate overhead; the cited milestone does not publish those calculations.
