For most players, buy the Digital Standard Edition. It includes the complete game and preorder benefits, costs less, and preserves a same-platform $30 upgrade option if you later decide that Vault cosmetics, BlackCell or DMZ bonuses are worth adding.
Buy the Digital Vault Edition at preorder if you already want those extras or qualify for the limited 10% loyalty discount. Choose a physical PS5 or Xbox Series X Standard Edition only when having a disc is important: physical copies cannot be upgraded to Vault.

The Standard Edition is therefore the sensible default when you care primarily about the campaign, multiplayer and the core game rather than a bundle of cosmetic and seasonal add-ons. It also leaves a clearly published $30 same-platform upgrade route open.
What the Digital Vault Edition adds
Vault contains the Standard game and preorder benefits, then layers on two operator packs, a weapon-cosmetic collection, a Season 1 BlackCell season and a package of DMZ advantages. These additions do not change the base-game release date or create a separate campaign; they are premium content attached to the digital purchase.
Hostile Alliance Operator Pack
This pack contains skins for Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix. The value is visual and character-focused: you are paying for additional operator appearances rather than a separately sold campaign or multiplayer mode.

Special Forces supplies four operators with national-themed designs. The published description identifies the number and theme of the operators but does not assign separate gameplay statistics to them.
Signature Weapon Collection
The Signature Weapon Collection adds weapon cosmetics. The available information does not establish a performance advantage, damage increase or competitive benefit, so treat this portion of Vault as customization content.

One Season 1 BlackCell season
Vault includes one Season 1 BlackCell pass with its associated Battle Pass benefits. It is a single season entitlement, not an unlimited pass for every future season. If you buy Vault for this feature, check that you intend to play during Season 1; the published package does not promise later-season BlackCell access.
DMZ Deployment Bonus
The DMZ bonus includes one extra Active Duty slot, contracts, rescue beacons, Fulton markers, backpacks and 2-Plate Carriers. These items matter most to players who expect to spend substantial time in DMZ. They are a poor reason to pay extra if you do not plan to use that mode.
How the $30 upgrade works
A Digital Standard buyer can add Vault later for $30, provided the purchase and upgrade are made on the same platform ecosystem. The published terms describe this as a same-platform upgrade; they do not promise cross-platform conversion of an entitlement.
- Buy Digital Standard on the platform account where you will play Modern Warfare 4.
- If you later want Vault content, locate the Vault upgrade offered for that same account and platform.
- Pay the published $30 upgrade price to add the Vault rewards to the existing digital purchase.
The upgrade is a safety valve for uncertain buyers, not a way to preserve every preorder promotion. In particular, the 10% loyalty discount applies to eligible Vault preorders and is unavailable on a later upgrade. A player who qualifies for that discount should compare the discounted preorder price with the $69.99 Standard purchase plus the full $30 upgrade before choosing to defer Vault.
Physical Standard copies are excluded. Activision states that physical editions cannot be upgraded to Vault, so buying a disc first and planning to add the digital bundle later will not work.

Which edition fits your priorities?
Choose Digital Standard when flexibility matters
- You want the complete game without paying for cosmetics or a seasonal pass immediately.
- You are unsure whether you will play DMZ or use the operator packs.
- You want the option to spend another $30 later rather than committing to Vault before launch.
- You are buying digitally on Xbox, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo Switch 2.
This is the strongest value choice for a typical player because the core game is identical to the one in Vault and the upgrade path remains available. The trade-off is that a later upgrade costs the full published $30 and cannot receive the preorder loyalty reduction.
Choose Digital Vault at preorder when the extras are already part of your plan
- You specifically want the Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix skins or the four Special Forces operators.
- You will use the Season 1 BlackCell pass and its Battle Pass benefits.
- You expect to play DMZ enough to benefit from the extra Active Duty slot and support items.
- You qualify for the 10% loyalty discount before the preorder deadline.
Vault makes more sense as an intentional content purchase than as an attempt to obtain a stronger version of the game. Its published additions are cosmetics, seasonal progression and DMZ equipment; no separate campaign, exclusive platform or gameplay-performance upgrade is identified.
Choose physical Standard when the disc itself is the priority
Physical Standard is offered for PS5 and Xbox Series X. It suits collectors, gift-givers and households that prefer a disc over a digital license. There is no PC physical edition in the published lineup. The cost and retailer terms are not specified here, so check the particular store listing for the amount you will pay.
The decision is effectively one-way: physical Standard gives you the base game on disc, but it does not provide a route to Vault. If you might want Vault operators, BlackCell or DMZ items, buy Digital Standard or Digital Vault instead.
Preorder timing and campaign access
Preorder customers receive campaign early access beginning October 16, 2026, one week before the full launch on October 23, 2026. The published schedule ties this access to preordering rather than to Vault specifically, so Standard preorder buyers are not required to pay for Vault to enter the campaign early.

Open Beta Early Access is listed among Digital Standard’s preorder benefits. That is separate from campaign early access: the former concerns the beta period, while the October 16 date concerns the campaign. Keep the two entitlements distinct when comparing store descriptions.
The 10% loyalty discount
Eligible players can receive 10% off a Vault preorder through October 23, 2026. Eligibility requires owning and having played a qualifying premium Call of Duty title on the same platform account. The offer is limited to the preorder window and does not transfer to the $30 Vault upgrade.
If you meet the requirement, verify that the discount appears on the account and platform where you intend to buy. If it does not appear, purchasing Standard first will not give you a later opportunity to apply that 10% reduction to an upgrade.

Activision lists Modern Warfare 4 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are not supported, so last-generation owners cannot use an Xbox One or PS4 copy to access the game.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox Play Anywhere covers Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC purchases. When buying within that ecosystem, confirm that the store listing is attached to the Microsoft account you will use on both devices. The Play Anywhere entitlement does not turn a physical PS5 or Xbox Series X disc into a Vault license.
Online and account checks
- A mobile phone number may be required.
- Multiplayer and DMZ require a continuous internet connection because the game uses texture streaming.
- Console online modes require the relevant platform’s online subscription.
- PC versions require TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.
These requirements affect all edition choices. Vault does not remove the online connection requirement, and Standard does not avoid the PC security checks.
Does Modern Warfare 4 come with Game Pass?
No. Xbox states that Modern Warfare 4 is not eligible for Xbox Game Pass at launch. To play on October 23, 2026, purchase Digital Standard, Digital Vault or an eligible physical Standard copy; a Game Pass subscription alone is not listed as access.
This also matters when comparing Xbox and Xbox PC buying options. Play Anywhere can cover the two Xbox platforms for a purchase, but it does not replace the purchase requirement or make the title a launch-day subscription game.

Practical buying decisions
If you are deciding before October 23
- Decide whether you need a disc. If yes, select physical Standard for PS5 or Xbox Series X and accept that Vault will not be available later.
- If you are buying digital, list the Vault items you will actually use: operator skins, weapon cosmetics, Season 1 BlackCell and DMZ bonuses.
- If those extras are not clearly worth the difference, choose Digital Standard and retain the $30 same-platform upgrade option.
- If you qualify for the 10% loyalty offer and already want Vault, apply it during preorder rather than postponing the decision.
- Check your platform, account, internet connection and PC security settings before launch.
If you are buying after launch
The preorder-only benefits and the October 16 campaign window are tied to the launch schedule. The published information does not state how long every preorder item or the loyalty discount will remain available after October 23, so do not assume that a post-launch purchase reproduces the preorder package. A Standard buyer should also confirm the current store price of the Vault upgrade before purchasing; the published $30 figure is the stated 2026 price, not a guarantee against future storefront changes.
