Short answer: Anbernic handhelds cannot natively play Nintendo Switch or Nintendo 3DS games. They are Android or Linux emulation consoles, not Nintendo-licensed systems, and they do not accept official Nintendo game cards. Some Android models can run unofficial 3DS emulator builds, with the upcoming dual-screen RG DDS designed around 3DS-like screen proportions. Switch emulation is even less certain: community forks can boot selected games on some T820-based Android models, but there is no complete compatibility catalogue, no native Switch support, and no independent full-library benchmark. If your goal is to play Switch games as Nintendo ships them, buy Nintendo hardware. Anbernic makes sense for retro systems through PS1, and for selected GameCube, PS2, PSP or 3DS emulation on faster Android models.

What is the direct answer?
Anbernic is not a Switch clone with access to Nintendo’s software catalogue. Every RG model is third-party hardware running Linux or Android. It has no Nintendo operating system, Nintendo eShop access, or cartridge reader that speaks the Switch or 3DS game-card protocol.

That leaves two separate questions. Native play is closed: you cannot insert a Switch or 3DS cartridge into an Anbernic and play it as you would on Nintendo hardware. Emulation is model-dependent: Android Anbernics can run some 3DS emulator builds, while Switch emulator forks remain unofficial, incomplete and legally contested.
What is an Anbernic handheld?
Anbernic is a Shenzhen manufacturer operating under the RG brand. Time Extension identifies the operator as Shenzhen YangLiMing Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., in operation since 2017. The catalogue divides broadly into inexpensive Linux “XX” consoles and more powerful Android models.

Linux XX consoles
The RG35XX family, RG34XX, RG28XX, RG CubeXX, RG40XX models and similar systems use Allwinner H700 hardware. They boot quickly and support community firmware such as GarlicOS or muOS. Their practical range is Game Boy through PlayStation 1; Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast support is uneven. GameCube and PS2 require Android hardware, not this Linux tier.
Android consoles
Models such as RG405M, RG406V, RG406H, RG556, RG557, RG Cube, RG Slide, RG476H and RG 55G1 run Android and can use heavier emulators. The RG556 is the catalogue entry point commonly associated with GameCube and PS2. The RG557 is listed at $369.99, while the RG556 is listed at $269.99.

These labels describe the chassis, not Nintendo compatibility.
Can I put a Switch or 3DS cartridge in an Anbernic?
No. Anbernic consoles do not contain Nintendo’s licensed card interface or firmware. A microSD slot used for user storage is not a Switch or 3DS cartridge slot, and a device shaped like a Switch Lite or 3DS does not change that limitation.
Official-store descriptions frame the hardware and emulation software as the product; game files are supplied by the owner. A preloaded card advertised with hundreds or thousands of Nintendo titles is a separate copyright and consumer-risk issue, not evidence of native support.
Which Anbernic models are unsuitable for Switch or 3DS?

- Linux RG DS Plus, if your target is 3DS rather than Nintendo DS
These models are excellent fits for older retro libraries, but their operating systems and performance ceiling make Switch unrealistic and 3DS impractical. The RG DS Plus is specifically a budget Nintendo DS-shaped Linux machine, not a 3DS emulator platform.

Can Android Anbernic handhelds emulate Nintendo 3DS?
Some can run a 3DS emulator, but that is unofficial emulation rather than native play. Android is the reason models such as RG556, RG406V, RG406H, RG476H, RG Cube and RG Slide appear in 3DS discussions. Performance, controls and game compatibility vary by chipset, emulator build and title.
Why the screen layout matters
3DS games use an upper 5:3 display and a lower 4:3 touch display. A single-screen Android handheld can place both images on one panel or use an external display, but either arrangement is a compromise: text becomes smaller, touch input is less natural, or the second screen is physically separate.
A firmware update documented by Pocket Tactics added USB-C external-display dual-screen support on T820 models including RG Slide, RG556, RG406H, RG406V and RG Cube. That creates a second monitor; it does not turn the handheld into a 3DS-style clamshell.

Azahar is the open-source continuation of the Citra 3DS emulator for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. It describes itself as unaffiliated with Nintendo. In October 2026, its developers said they would not officially support Anbernic devices after the company promoted unofficial, piracy-focused forks in RG DDS advertising. The statement applies across the Anbernic brand, not only the RG DDS, and says device-specific bugs will not be investigated or fixed. The announcement is reproduced at the Azahar developers’ October 2026 statement.
Therefore, an Android Anbernic may run an emulator build, but buyers should not expect official Azahar troubleshooting or guaranteed support. “Azahar Plus” shown in promotional material is an unofficial fork, not the supported upstream build.
RG DS Plus: good for DS, not 3DS
The RG DS Plus costs $94.99 according to Android Authority’s October 28, 2026 report. It uses a Rockchip RK3568, 1GB of RAM, no onboard storage, one analog stick, a 4,000 mAh battery and two 1,024×768 displays. It handles Nintendo DS through NNDDSS and DraStic via RetroArch, but its hardware is not a practical 3DS solution. As Android Authority’s Hadlee Simons put it, you can “absolutely forget about Nintendo 3DS emulation.”
RG DDS: the 3DS-shaped, unproven option
The RG DDS is an Android 16 clamshell with a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 (SG6275P), Adreno A22 graphics, 6,000 mAh battery, 27W charging, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and a bundled stylus. Its upper display is 4.7 inches at 1,200×720 with a 5:3 ratio; the lower is 4 inches at 960×720 with a 4:3 ratio. Both are listed at 300 pixels per inch and 500 nits, closely matching the original 3DS geometry.

ANBERNIC lists gradual shipping from December 10, 2026. The 8GB/128GB model is $299.99 regular or $284.99 preorder; the 12GB/256GB version is $364.99 regular or $349.99 preorder. The manufacturer claims triple the original 3DS panel resolution and up to five-times scaling in selected titles, but those are manufacturer claims.
Commercial 3DS footage, including Pokémon Omega Ruby, appeared in promotional material. However, coverage of the October 15 reveal reported no independently verified system-by-system compatibility list, and no independent reviewer had confirmed retail-unit performance by October 29, 2026. The official listing text emphasizes Android gaming, screen geometry and the stylus without claiming Nintendo licensing. Treat the RG DDS as a promising 3DS-oriented Android design, not a proven replacement for a 3DS.
Can Anbernic handhelds emulate Nintendo Switch?
Some faster Android models can boot unofficial Switch emulator forks, but Anbernic does not sell a supported Switch catalogue device. Switch emulation is a compatibility experiment, not a feature equivalent to owning a Switch.
What the available evidence shows
Retail comparison tables checked October 29, 2026 place “Switch / PC” in a tier for Windows handhelds running native games. No Anbernic model appears in that tier. Android Anbernics are generally categorized around Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube or PS2 capability.
Community tutorials have targeted T820-based models such as RG406V, RG406H, RG476H and RG556 with Citron or modified Suyu builds. In one Spanish-language Palacio Gamer video from November 3, 2025, the creator reported approximately 39 frames per second for Super Mario Bros. Wonder in Citron and 45 frames per second in Suyu on an RG476H. Those figures describe one creator’s session, not a standardized test, and they cannot predict performance across the library. The same video said Citron booted some titles, including examples such as Silksong and Hades, that Suyu did not.
As of October 29, 2026, no independent published full-library Switch compatibility percentage exists for any Anbernic model. There is also no independent retail-unit RG DDS benchmark covering Switch or 3DS. A game that reaches a menu or runs briefly is not proof of stable play, correct graphics, audio reliability, save support or acceptable battery life.
RG 55G1: Switch Lite appearance, Android internals
The RG 55G1 has a 5.5-inch 1,920×1,080 display, Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, Android 14, Hall-effect sticks and 4GB/64GB or 8GB/128GB configurations. Digital Trends reported a starting price of $150, a three-day $10 launch discount and a claimed battery life of up to eight hours. Android Authority listed a $139.99 promotion and $149.99 standard price on October 28, 2026, and described comfortable performance through PSP with only some GameCube and PS2 titles playable. Its Switch Lite silhouette is cosmetic; it does not run Switch OS or accept Switch cards.

What are the legal and support risks?
Emulator software and unauthorized game distribution are separate issues. Emulation projects may describe lawful personal backups, but obtaining or distributing copyrighted game files without authorization can infringe copyright. This article does not provide ROM, key or decryption-file sources.
Nintendo’s 2024 case against Tropic Haze, the maker of Yuzu and Citra, ended with a proposed final judgment requiring $2,400,000 in damages and a permanent injunction. The court’s findings said Yuzu was primarily designed to circumvent and play Nintendo Switch games. The judgment addressed unauthorized Nintendo cryptographic keys and DMCA anti-circumvention provisions, and barred trafficking in Yuzu, its source and other circumvention devices.
Community successors such as Citron and Suyu are not Nintendo-licensed, are not Anbernic-supported catalogue features and exist under the legal shadow of that action. The October 2026 Azahar support withdrawal adds a practical risk: the emulator most associated with 3DS on Android will not investigate Anbernic-specific bugs.
Industry pressure is also increasing. The Entertainment Software Association asked U.S. trade officials in October 2026 to classify Anbernic under the “Superfake” category on the Notorious Markets list, arguing that plug-and-play handhelds can be sold with concealed storage containing unauthorized game copies. Time Extension reported the request; no final U.S. government listing was established in the available reporting. Buying an officially empty device and supplying legally obtained software is materially different from purchasing a preloaded piracy card.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Anbernic should I choose for my actual goal?
Match the purchase to the system you want to emulate, rather than to the shell’s resemblance to Nintendo hardware.
Choose a Linux XX model for classic retro
Pick an RG35XX-family, RG34XX, RG28XX or RG CubeXX when your target is Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Super NES, Mega Drive, arcade systems or PS1. The RG35XX is listed at $44.99. These are poor choices for both 3DS and Switch.
Choose an Android model for heavier retro systems
Choose an RG556, RG406-series model, RG476H, RG Cube, RG Slide or RG557 when you want Android emulators for PSP, Dreamcast, GameCube or PS2, accepting that results vary by game. T820 models are the ones most often targeted by community Switch-fork guides, but those guides do not make Switch a supported feature.

Choose RG DS Plus only for DS
The RG DS Plus makes sense if you want two screens and Nintendo DS software at a low price. It does not extend that promise to 3DS.
Consider RG DDS only if you accept the uncertainty
The RG DDS is the only Anbernic design built around 3DS-like screen ratios and touch input. Its December 2026 shipping schedule, unverified retail compatibility and loss of official Azahar support mean it should be treated as an early Android emulation bet, not a guaranteed 3DS replacement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What should I buy to play Nintendo software officially?
For Switch games, use a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Those systems provide the licensed operating system, game-card reader, updates and Nintendo account services that Anbernic cannot reproduce.
For 3DS cartridges, use an original Nintendo 3DS-family system. Production and the 3DS eShop have ended, so used hardware is the practical licensed cartridge route. Anbernic’s dual-screen shapes borrow the idea and proportions of Nintendo’s hardware, but they do not provide Nintendo’s software environment.
How were the model recommendations selected?
The recommendations follow the hardware and software boundaries documented for each family: operating system, chipset class, screen arrangement, stated emulation range, price listings checked in October 2026, and whether independent retail compatibility evidence exists. Native Nintendo support is treated separately from unofficial emulation, and unverified manufacturer claims are labeled as such.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an RG35XX run Nintendo 3DS games?
No. The RG35XX family is an Allwinner H700 Linux platform intended for systems from Game Boy through PS1. It lacks the performance, Android 3DS software environment and dual-screen controls needed for a useful 3DS experience.
Does the RG DS Plus play Nintendo DS cartridges?
It is an emulator handheld rather than a cartridge reader, so it does not accept original DS cards. Its two screens and Linux software are aimed at legally supplied DS game files, not physical cartridges or 3DS titles.
Will Azahar fix 3DS emulator problems on my Anbernic?
The Azahar developers said in October 2026 that they will not officially support Anbernic devices or investigate Anbernic-specific bugs. Any emulator build working on an Anbernic should therefore be treated as unsupported, even when the same project is officially available for Android generally.
Is the RG DDS a Nintendo 3DS replacement?
Not yet. Its display ratios, stylus and Android 16 design target the 3DS experience, but independent retail-unit compatibility testing was not published by October 29, 2026. It also lacks Nintendo licensing, cartridge support and official Azahar support.
Can a Switch emulator run every game on an RG556?
No published independent source provides a complete Switch compatibility percentage for the RG556 or another Anbernic model. Community demonstrations show selected games booting on some T820 handhelds, but results vary by emulator fork, title and settings, and should not be treated as a full-library guarantee.
