Sometimes, depending on your Companions quest progress and game setup. In ordinary unmodded play, a secondary guide describes Farkas as protected from permanent death, so he may collapse in combat and get back up rather than die. Community references report that his protection can be tied to quest state and to his brother Vilkas, but accounts differ on exactly when that changes. Don’t assume Farkas is always essential—or always killable.
What happens when Farkas is defeated?
A character being knocked down or incapacitated is not necessarily dead. If Farkas falls during a fight and later recovers, that is consistent with the protection from permanent death described for normal gameplay in this secondary guide. The guide is not an authoritative record of the game’s underlying mechanics, so this does not establish that he is protected in every quest state or setup.
Why can his status vary?
Farkas is a member of the Companions, and community references connect his essential status with Companions quest progress, including Glory of the Dead, and with the status of Vilkas. The reported transition is not consistent across accounts, so there is no reliable universal point at which to say Farkas becomes killable. Treat your current quest state as relevant, not as proof of a specific outcome.
What to check in your game
- Quest progress: Note whether you have completed Glory of the Dead and where you are in the Companions story.
- Follower status: Check whether Farkas is currently following you; the available reports do not establish one rule that covers every follower and quest situation.
- Game setup: Mods or console commands can alter NPC protection and behavior. A result in a modified game may not describe standard gameplay.
- What you observed: Distinguish a temporary collapse from permanent death; the two are not the same outcome.
Should you force Farkas’s death?
Be cautious. A secondary guide notes that console commands or mods may change his behavior, but the available evidence does not verify a safe, version-specific procedure. Forcing a death or changing a quest-related NPC’s status could interfere with quest progression. No command sequence or specific mod can be recommended here as a guaranteed fix.
#1 Best Overall
If Farkas’s status matters to a quest, avoid experimenting on your only save. Make a separate save first, and check guidance that matches your platform, game edition, and installed mods before changing NPC behavior.
