Can I Access the Same Minecraft World on Different Devices?

The same Minecraft world can work across devices, but edition matters. Learn when to use Realms, how Java transfers work, and why a Microsoft sign-in alone does not sync local saves.

Yes, but the method depends on your Minecraft edition. Bedrock players can use a Realm to access one cloud-hosted world across supported devices; Java players can transfer world files between computers or use Java Realms. Signing into the same Microsoft account alone does not normally sync an ordinary local world.

Which device combinations can share a world?

Minecraft cross-play and world access are edition-specific: both devices must run the same edition for the standard methods below.

Devices Can you use the same world? Typical method
Android phone and iPhone or iPad Yes, if both use Bedrock Realms, or a manual transfer where supported
Phone or tablet and Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch Yes, if both use Bedrock Realms
Windows Bedrock and console or mobile Bedrock Yes Realms
Windows Java and macOS or Linux Java Yes Transfer the world folder or use Java Realms
Two consoles Yes, if both use Bedrock Realms; the same Microsoft account does not share local saves automatically
Two Windows PCs Yes Realms or a manual transfer, depending on edition
Java on a PC and Bedrock on a console, phone, or PC Not directly Use the same edition on both devices; conversion or bridging solutions are separate and compatibility-sensitive

Minecraft lists supported Bedrock platforms including Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, mobile, Amazon Fire, and Chromebook; Java is for Windows, macOS, and Linux. See Minecraft’s platform overview and Java and Bedrock edition differences.

Check which edition you use

Bedrock Edition

Bedrock is the edition used on consoles and mobile devices, as well as Windows 10/11. It is the usual choice when the devices include a phone, tablet, Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch. Supported Bedrock devices can play together, but platform and online-service requirements still apply.

Java Edition

Java runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux computers. Its ordinary cross-play and Realms access are for Java players; Java cannot directly join a Bedrock world or Bedrock Realm.

Windows PC can have both

A Windows PC may provide access to Java and Bedrock, but they are distinct editions with separate world formats and multiplayer systems. Owning both does not make a save from one edition open directly in the other. Minecraft’s PC edition page describes the two editions.

Bedrock: use a Realm for the simplest cross-device access

A Realm is a cloud-hosted world that can be accessed from supported devices running the matching edition. Playing directly on the Realm means players use the shared current world; the owner does not have to keep their device online. Realms also includes backups. A Bedrock Realm does not bridge to Java.

Realms requires a trial or active subscription. Prices vary by country and storefront; Minecraft’s U.S. page listed Bedrock Realms at $3.99/month, Bedrock Realms Plus at $7.99/month, and Java Realms at $7.99/month on August 16, 2026. Bedrock Realms listed the player plus two simultaneous players; Realms Plus listed the player plus ten. Treat these as dated U.S. prices, not guaranteed current or universal rates. See Minecraft Realms for current availability and terms.

For a one-time move, a Realm can also serve as a bridge: upload the local world from the first device, then download a copy on the second. That downloaded copy is separate from the live Realm. Later play on one does not merge automatically with changes made on the other, so decide which version will be authoritative.

Transfer a Bedrock world through Realms

Update Minecraft on both devices first, and sign in to the Microsoft account that has access to the Realm. Before replacing a Realm slot, download or otherwise preserve the world already in it: Replace World can overwrite the selected slot.

  1. On the original device, launch Minecraft, select Play, then open the Realms tab.
  2. Select the Realm and open Settings.
  3. Choose a world slot and select Edit World.
  4. At the bottom of Game Settings, choose Upload World for an empty slot or Replace World for a slot that already has a world. Confirm only after checking the slot and preserving anything you need.
  5. On the second device, launch Minecraft and sign in with the same Microsoft account. Select Play, then open Realms.
  6. Select the Realm, open Settings, select the slot with the uploaded world, and choose Edit World.
  7. At the bottom of Game Settings, select Download World. The local copy appears under the Worlds tab, with the original name followed by “ – Copy.”

These are Minecraft’s documented transfer steps; menu wording can vary with platform or game updates. See the Bedrock world transfer guide and the Realm upload guide.

Java: transfer between computers or use Java Realms

For a one-time move between Java computers, copy the world folder from the old installation to the matching Minecraft installation on the new computer. The exact save location and transfer method depend on the operating system, launcher, and permissions, so there is no single path that fits every setup. Back up the world before moving or replacing files.

Open the destination with a compatible Minecraft version. For a modded world, the destination may also need the same Minecraft version, mod loader, compatible mod versions, configuration files, and dependencies. A mismatch can prevent the world from loading or change how it behaves.

Java Realms is the cloud option if you want the same Java world available across supported computers rather than copying saves. It remains separate from Bedrock Realms and does not enable Java-to-Bedrock play. Minecraft’s new-device and transfer help covers general installation and transfer considerations.

What does the same Microsoft account sync?

An account provides access to account-linked services and content, such as the gamertag, purchases, and Realms access where supported. It does not normally upload ordinary local worlds, so a local save will not simply appear on another device because you signed in there.

World data—including builds, terrain, chests, pets, villagers, and player data within that world—belongs to the save or hosted world. Marketplace content, add-ons, skins, and other platform-specific material can have edition, platform, licensing, or compatibility limits; do not assume every item transfers identically. If you enter an existing multiplayer world with a different Microsoft account, Minecraft may treat you as a new player with a different inventory and spawn state. See Minecraft’s Microsoft account information.

Can people on different devices play in the world at the same time?

Yes, if everyone uses the same edition and the world is hosted in a Realm, on a compatible server, or in a multiplayer session hosted by a player. Bedrock players on supported consoles, mobile devices, and Windows can play together; Java multiplayer is for Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A local world is not automatically an always-online shared world. In a player-hosted session, the host generally needs to be online for others to join. A Realm stays available when its owner is offline. Console multiplayer may also require the platform’s separate online service: Xbox online access, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online, depending on platform, region, account, and current policy. Those requirements are separate from a Minecraft Realm subscription; see Minecraft’s Realm buying guide.

Choose the method that fits your move

Your situation Best fit Main trade-off
Bedrock across a console, phone, tablet, or Windows device; want one current world Bedrock Realms Recurring subscription; same edition required
Moving a Java world once between computers Manual world-folder transfer Requires careful save handling and does not sync future changes
Persistent group world with more control over mods, plugins, or server settings A compatible server, including self-hosting You manage setup, maintenance, backups, security, and compatibility; Java servers do not accept Bedrock clients automatically
Usually play on one device or host occasional local multiplayer Local world with separate backups Save remains on that device, and other players generally need the host online

If the Realm or world does not appear

  • Realm missing: Confirm the intended Microsoft account, an active trial or subscription, and that you are checking the Realms tab rather than only Worlds.
  • Edition mismatch: A Java save will not appear as a Bedrock world, or vice versa. Use the same edition on both devices for the normal workflow.
  • Version mismatch: Update Minecraft on both devices before starting the transfer, as Minecraft’s transfer guide instructs. For Java, also check the world’s version and any mods or loader.
  • Console cannot join: Check the platform’s online-service subscription and multiplayer or privacy settings, as well as the Realm account.
  • Wrong Realm world was replaced: Use a preserved local or downloaded backup to restore the intended world; do not assume replacing a slot merges its previous contents.
  • Downloaded copy is behind: Downloading creates a separate local copy. Choose whether to continue on the Realm or the local copy; changes made independently do not merge automatically.

Minecraft’s Bedrock transfer instructions and new-device help provide additional account and setup checks.

Before you switch devices

  • Identify whether the world is Bedrock or Java, and confirm the destination supports that edition.
  • Sign in to the intended Microsoft account for account and Realm access.
  • Update Minecraft on both devices and back up the world.
  • Use Realms for Bedrock cross-device access, or transfer the correct Java world files between computers.
  • Open and verify the world on the destination before deleting or overwriting anything.
  • If you want to keep playing on multiple devices, choose one authoritative Realm or local save; separate copies do not synchronize or merge on their own.
