Often, yes—but it depends on the Xbox console, the exact game, and whether you have a disc, an existing digital purchase, or a regional code. Changing the console’s country or region setting on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S does not unlock every game or guarantee that a store purchase, code, add-on, or service is available. Check the title and the specific market before buying.
What determines whether a different-region Xbox game will work?
There is no single yes-or-no answer for every Xbox game. Separate four questions: whether the console supports the title, whether the format works with your hardware, whether the game or content is available in the destination market, and whether you can buy or redeem it there.
- Console and title: Xbox backward compatibility applies to selected older games, not every original Xbox or Xbox 360 title.
- Format and hardware: A disc requires a console with a disc drive. Series S is digital-only.
- Market availability: A game, code, add-on, or service may have country-specific availability or rules.
- What you want to do: Playing a game you already own, buying it, redeeming a code, downloading updates, and accessing multiplayer or DLC are distinct questions.
For market availability, consult the Xbox supported countries and regions list and the game’s current listing. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules are also relevant to digital content. Neither source establishes a blanket guarantee for every imported code or add-on.
Can I change my Xbox region to play a game?
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, you can update the console’s country or region setting and restart it. Microsoft’s country or region change instructions cover the process. This setting is not a universal unlock: it does not make an unsupported title compatible or guarantee access to every market’s store content.

- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
Xbox 360 location changes work differently from the Xbox One and Series X|S setting. Microsoft also notes that changing an account’s region does not resolve backward-compatibility errors. If an older game fails to run on a newer console, check the title’s compatibility rather than treating a region change as the fix.
What if the game is on disc?
First confirm that your console has a disc drive and that the game is supported on that console generation. Xbox’s backward-compatibility list identifies selected original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles supported on Series X|S; compatibility should not be assumed for an unlisted older game.

Series S cannot read physical game discs. Xbox’s September 2020 Series X and Series S fact sheet describes Series S as digital-games-only. For other consoles, confirm the specific title’s support and your hardware before relying on an imported disc.
What if I own the digital game or want to use a foreign code?
A game already in your library
Check whether the exact title is supported on your console. For original Xbox and Xbox 360 games on Series X|S, use Xbox’s backward-compatibility list. Compatibility is title-specific; a region setting cannot add a game to that list.

A digital code, purchase, or add-on
Do not assume that a code or add-on from another country will redeem or work in your account. Check the exact product listing and destination market before purchasing, and consult the supported countries and regions list and Microsoft’s digital goods rules. The available guidance does not establish one rule that guarantees every imported code or add-on will work.

- Identify your console: Xbox 360, Xbox One, Series X, or Series S.
- Identify the format: disc, digital game already owned, new digital purchase, code, or add-on.
- For an older game on Series X|S, look up the exact title on Xbox’s backward-compatibility list.
- If it is a disc, make sure the console has a disc drive. Series S does not.
- Check the game or content listing and the supported-region information for the country where you intend to use it.
- Check separately whether your question concerns playing, buying, redeeming, updating, multiplayer, or DLC; availability for one does not establish availability for all.
Xbox Support has a page titled “Region block for buying games and apps”. The page’s accessible guidance does not establish specific purchase-block mechanics here, so verify the current listing rather than assuming a particular block or workaround applies.
