Can Linux Run on Nintendo’s NES? Someone Tried—and Got LUnix Running

A Linux experiment on Nintendo hardware became a LUnix port: the fuller setup used a Japanese Famicom and Famicom Disk System, not a standard NES alone.

Not native Linux on a standard NES. A developer set out to see whether Linux could run on Nintendo hardware, then pivoted to LUnix, a Unix-like operating system. The fuller demonstration used a Japanese Famicom with a Famicom Disk System (FDS); a separate report describes booting the LUnix kernel on an unmodified NES using an EverDrive cartridge. Those are different setups with different capabilities.

What actually ran on the console?

The system was LUnix, not Linux. LUnix is a Unix-like operating system originally associated with Commodore 64/128 hardware. BetaNews reported on February 15, 2024 that DeCrAzYo adapted it for Nintendo hardware after the NES’s limitations made the original Linux idea impractical. The project’s lng-fds repository describes itself as a Famicom Disk System port of LUnix Next Generation.

This was not a Raspberry Pi hidden inside a console, nor merely a console being used as a display: the software ran on the console’s processor. But calling the result “Linux on an NES” would still be inaccurate. Linux and LUnix are distinct systems; the latter is Unix-like, not a Linux distribution.

Why did the Famicom Disk System matter?

Memory was the central constraint. Hackaday reports that the original NES has 2 KB of RAM and 2 KB of video RAM, while the Famicom Disk System added 32 KB of RAM. BetaNews also describes the FDS as providing an interrupt timer and floppy storage. That additional hardware made a fuller LUnix setup—with room for user-space utilities in its shell—more practical than relying on the stock console alone.

The reported full arrangement was a Japanese Famicom paired with the FDS. It was not a generic add-on for every western NES, and the available reporting does not establish a compatibility matrix for different console revisions or flash cartridges.

What work did the port require?

This was a hardware-specific port, not a straightforward installation. The developer adapted the operating system with a new memory map and startup initialization, then added drivers for keyboard input and the console display. The FDS supplied memory and disk functionality used by the fuller setup.

  • Comes with console, 1 controller, power cord, video cord
  • Controller is original OEM (not 3rd party)
  • Tested and works well. Nice condition

Those changes explain why the Famicom/FDS demonstration should not be treated as equivalent to simply inserting a cartridge into an ordinary NES. The repository is public for readers interested in the port’s code: DeCrAzYo’s lng-fds project.

Could it run on an unmodified NES?

Tom’s Hardware reports a separate route in which the LUnix kernel was booted on an unmodified NES using an EverDrive cartridge. That is a narrower claim than saying the complete Famicom/FDS environment ran on stock NES hardware: the cartridge kernel demonstration should not be assumed to include the same keyboard, disk, shell utilities, or added RAM.

  • E10+ w/ Mild Violence

DeCrAzYo described possible expansion as a future idea, not a completed build: “We could create a cartridge that provides more RAM… wire up a keyboard… and even add a disk drive for good measure.”

What would someone need to reproduce the fuller setup?

  • A Japanese Famicom and its Famicom Disk System hardware, rather than assuming a standard western NES is interchangeable.
  • The LUnix FDS port and the additional input/display arrangements required by the project.
  • Careful checking of hardware condition and compatibility: current used-hardware availability and compatibility across revisions are not established by the project reporting.

The FDS is historical project hardware, not a generic NES upgrade. An EverDrive may be relevant to the separately reported kernel-boot route, but it is not evidence that the fuller Famicom/FDS setup can be replaced with a flash cartridge.
