N64: Recompiled is a tool that can translate Nintendo 64 game code for native execution on modern PCs, making title-specific ports possible without first completing a full decompilation. But that does not mean nearly every N64 game already has a playable, maintained port—or that every port includes ray tracing. The documented Zelda 64: Recompiled and Banjo: Recompiled projects support high frame rates and ultrawide displays; their READMEs list ray tracing as planned, not shipped.
What “recompiled” means for an N64 game
Static recompilation translates a game’s machine code from one platform so it can execute natively on another. N64: Recompiled provides a way to translate Nintendo 64 code for modern systems, while developers still need to handle game-specific behavior, rendering, compatibility and enhancements. It can make a port possible without first producing a complete decompilation of the original source code, but it does not eliminate reverse-engineering or title-specific work. Zelda 64: Recompiled documentation and Banjo: Recompiled documentation describe individual implementations.

This is different from a general-purpose emulator: a recompiled project is built for a particular game, rather than serving as a program that runs arbitrary N64 ROMs. The existence of a recompilation tool therefore signals potential reach, not a complete catalog of ports. Tom’s Hardware’s May 12, 2024 article popularized the broader claim, but it does not establish that nearly every N64 release has a finished port. Tom’s Hardware, May 12, 2024
What the documented projects currently offer
| Project | Game and supported version | Documented features | Platform and other details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zelda 64: Recompiled | Majora’s Mask; US N64 release only, according to its README. | Native port, high-framerate rendering, widescreen and ultrawide aspect ratios, and mod support. Ray tracing and higher-quality model replacements are listed as planned. | The README notes animation quirks at the edges of certain cutscenes at very wide aspect ratios. See the project README for current details. |
| Banjo: Recompiled | Banjo-Kazooie; North American 1.0 version, according to its README. | Native port, high-framerate rendering, widescreen and ultrawide support, mods, and PC input options. Ray tracing via RT64 is listed as planned. | Published requirements include Windows, Linux and macOS support, plus Linux and Steam Deck support. See the project README for the current feature list and requirements. |
| DK64: Recompiled | Donkey Kong 64; the cited report does not state a compatible game version. | Tom’s Hardware reported native recompilation, ultrawide support and uncapped frame rates. | That report, dated August 30, 2026, describes Windows, Linux and macOS support. Consult the project’s current release documentation for availability and compatibility details; the cited article is secondary reporting. Tom’s Hardware, August 30, 2026 |
These examples show why feature claims need to be checked per game. High frame rates or ultrawide rendering in one port do not prove that another port has them, and a feature marked planned should not be presented as available. Individual project pages may also document incomplete features and known issues.

What you need to play a recompiled port
These projects do not provide the original game assets. You need the game version accepted by the particular port, and an arbitrary ROM may not work. For the two projects with explicit version requirements in their READMEs:
- Majora’s Mask: Zelda 64: Recompiled specifies the US N64 release.
- Banjo-Kazooie: Banjo: Recompiled specifies the North American 1.0 release.
Banjo: Recompiled’s published PC requirements are specific to that project: a GPU supporting Direct3D 12.0 with Shader Model 6, Vulkan 1.2 or Metal Argument Buffers Tier 2, and an x86-64 PC with SSE4.1. Do not assume those requirements apply to other recompiled games. Its README lists Windows, Linux and macOS builds and Linux and Steam Deck support; check the project page for the current supported configurations.
A controller is optional for Banjo: Recompiled: its README documents controller, keyboard and mouse input, without recommending a particular controller model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether a particular N64 game is ready
- Find the game-specific project. A recompilation tool’s general capabilities do not establish that a port exists for the game you want.
- Confirm a playable release and game version. Check the project’s current README or release documentation for the required regional or revision-specific game data.
- Separate shipped features from planned work. Look for explicit wording about high frame rates, aspect ratios, ray tracing, mods and input support; do not infer a feature from another game’s port.
- Check your system and known issues. Compare the project’s stated operating-system and hardware requirements with your PC, then review its known-issues section for relevant limitations.
There is no established authoritative count of completed N64 recompilation ports in the cited sources. A 2026 report about one additional project is not a census of the platform. The useful question is therefore not whether “nearly all” N64 games are already ported, but whether a specific game has a current project, a compatible release and the features you want.
