Why the Video Game Industry Is Seeing So Many Layoffs

Layoffs across game studios reflect overlapping pressures—from restructuring and canceled projects to broader market conditions—while workers face a difficult search for new roles.

Several pressures are converging: game companies cite restructuring, budget cuts, market conditions, canceled projects and strategic shifts, while workers also point to management decisions and wider economic forces. The 2026 Game Developers Conference (GDC) survey shows layoffs remain common among respondents, but it is not a census of the industry and cannot establish one definitive cause for the wave.

How widespread are layoffs in the game industry?

In the 2026 State of the Game Industry survey, more than 2,300 game industry professionals responded. Of them, 28% said they had personally been laid off in the preceding two years: 17% in the most recent 12 months and 11% in the 12 months before that. Among US respondents, 33% reported a layoff over the two-year period.

Layoffs also affected a large share of respondents’ employers. Half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous 12 months. Two-thirds of AAA respondents said their company had layoffs, compared with one-third of respondents at indie studios.

Those figures describe survey respondents’ experiences, not the total number of people or jobs lost. They also measure two different things: whether an individual was laid off and whether their company conducted layoffs. A company can cut staff without every employee losing a job.

What reasons do companies give for layoffs?

GDC asked respondents affected by layoffs to select up to three reasons their current or former company gave. The most frequently reported explanations were:

Company-stated reason Share of affected respondents reporting it
Company restructuring 43%
Budget cuts 38%
Market conditions 38%
Project canceled 32%
Strategic direction change 31%

These percentages come from the 2026 GDC report. Respondents could select multiple explanations, so the figures overlap rather than add up to 100%. They record what employers told affected workers; they do not independently verify the business rationale or show what share of all layoffs each factor caused.

Why are layoffs happening across so many studios?

Companies are cutting costs and changing plans

Restructuring, budget reductions, market conditions and project cancellations point to a broad combination of cost control and shifting business plans, rather than a single trigger. When a game is canceled or a company changes direction, teams built for that work may be reduced. But the survey does not quantify how many layoffs came from each scenario, or establish a single industry-wide financial cause.

Workers also blame management and economic pressures

In more than 1,200 open responses, workers attributed the rise in layoffs to issues including mismanagement and greed, unrealistic expectations, tariffs and other global economic pressures, and AI adoption. These are respondents’ views, not a measured breakdown of causes. The report does not establish AI as the principal reason for layoffs.

The post-pandemic hiring surge is context, not a complete explanation

The GDC report frames the recent layoffs against COVID-era investment and hiring, followed by hopes that the industry would reach a “course correction.” It does not calculate how much of the current wave resulted from pandemic-era expansion. Assigning a definitive share to over-hiring, acquisitions, interest rates or game budgets would go beyond what the survey establishes.

Are layoffs getting worse?

The 2025 GDC survey reported that 11% of developers had been laid off in the prior year. In that survey, affected respondents said employers cited restructuring (22%), declining revenues (18%) and market or industry shifts (15%).

The 2026 survey reports 17% laid off in its most recent 12-month period, but the two annual snapshots should not be read as a precise year-over-year trend. Survey populations and question wording may differ, and the respondents are not necessarily the same people. The figures show layoffs remain a serious concern in both surveys, not an audited count of industry job losses.

Who is most exposed, and what happens after a layoff?

AAA respondents more often reported that their company had conducted layoffs than indie respondents—two-thirds versus one-third. That company-level comparison does not mean individual workers at smaller studios are unaffected; it measures how many respondents said their employer made cuts, not the likelihood that any particular employee lost a job.

Finding another job can take time. In the 2026 GDC survey, 48% of people who had been laid off said they had not found another job. Among those laid off one to two years earlier, 36% still reported not finding another job.

Students also expressed concern about entering the field: 74% in a smaller student survey were worried about future job prospects. GDC reported that students pointed to a shortage of entry-level roles, competition from more experienced laid-off workers and possible AI-led displacement.
