Can another player take your pet?
Rare says pets can be picked up and handled by their owners and crewmates. The Sea of Thieves community wiki says any player can pick up and place a pet, so another pirate may be able to carry yours temporarily. That is interaction with an equipped companion, not evidence that they gain ownership.

Rare’s official pages explain how to equip a purchased pet but do not explicitly promise that permanent theft is impossible. The practical distinction is that temporary carrying is described by secondary mechanics documentation, while no permanent ownership-transfer mechanic is documented in the available sources. This does not establish what would happen in every bug or exploit.

Rare Support says to equip a purchased pet by selecting it at a Pet Chest during an active session. You can find a Pet Chest aboard your ship on the lower deck or outside the Pirate Emporium shop at an Outpost.

- Start or join an active Sea of Thieves session.
- Go to the Pet Chest on your ship’s lower deck, or the chest outside the Pirate Emporium at an Outpost.
- Select your purchased pet to equip it.
If the pet is no longer beside you, checking the Pet Chest is the documented way to select it again.
What Rare says about pets
The official Pirate Emporium describes pets as companions for sailing and exploring, and says they can be named, picked up and handled by owners and crewmates. Rare Support’s pet-equipping instructions explain how to select a purchased pet at a Pet Chest. Those official details support interaction and re-equipping; the broader claim that any player can pick a pet up comes from the community wiki.
