What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: A PS5 with a disc drive plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 game discs. No PS5 model plays PS1, PS2 or PS3 game discs directly. The original PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any disc, while newer Digital Edition model groups can accept Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive.
That distinction matters if you own a physical library, buy second-hand games or are choosing between PS5 hardware versions. Here is exactly what works, what does not, and how to use a compatible PS4 disc.

PS5 disc compatibility at a glance
| Disc generation | Plays directly on PS5? | Requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 | No | PS5 does not play PlayStation format software from a disc. |
| PS2 | No | PS5 does not play PlayStation 2 format software from a disc. |
| PS3 | No | PlayStation Support explicitly says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. |
| PS4 | Yes, for the overwhelming majority | Use a PS5 with a working disc drive; the disc is needed whenever you launch the installed game. |
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states that “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” Its PlayStation Support documentation separately says, “PS5 consoles don’t support PlayStation®3 discs.” PS4 is the only previous generation in this list with broad native disc support.

PS1 discs
A PS1 disc cannot be inserted into a PS5 and played as a PS1 game. Sony’s safety documentation expressly excludes PlayStation format software from disc playback. Owning the original disc does not create a PS5-compatible license or convert the game into a modern digital release.

PS2 discs
PS2 game discs are excluded in the same official guidance. The PS5 will not install a PS2 disc as a playable PS5 title, so a physical PS2 collection cannot be used directly through the console’s disc drive.
PS3 discs
PS3 discs also do not work. Sony’s support wording is unambiguous: “PS5 consoles don’t support PlayStation®3 discs.” A PS3 disc therefore cannot be used as an install source, ownership key or automatic upgrade path on PS5.
How broad PS4 backward compatibility is
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2020 Ultimate FAQ reported that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible with PS5. Current Sony support language describes the playable catalog as the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. The 99% figure is a historical published estimate from 2020, not a guarantee that every title, mode or peripheral behaves identically today.
Compatibility is broad rather than perfect. Sony warns that some PS4 games can display errors or unexpected behavior on PS5. Certain PS4 functions are unavailable, and selected games receive Game Boost for higher or smoother frame rates. Game Boost is title-specific; it does not mean every PS4 game receives a performance upgrade.
Check a specific game before relying on it
Use Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility list for the exact game you own or plan to buy. Check it before purchasing a used disc, an add-on, a required accessory or a title whose special features matter to you. The compatibility list can change, and a game’s basic launch compatibility does not promise that every PS4-era feature is present.
How to use a PS4 disc on PS5
The following procedure applies to a PS5 model with a disc drive:
- Confirm the hardware. Make sure your PS5 has a built-in disc drive or a compatible Sony add-on drive. The original Digital Edition has no drive and cannot perform these steps.
- Insert the PS4 disc. Place the disc in the drive with the correct side facing as indicated by the console. The PS5 identifies the game and begins installing it automatically the first time.
- Allow installation to finish. A disc-based PS4 game is installed to the PS5’s storage before you play. The disc is the ownership check; it is not merely an optional installer.
- Install any offered update. The console may require an update before the game is ready. The available update and its timing vary by title.
- Leave the disc inserted when playing. You must insert the same disc every time you start the installed game. Removing it after installation does not turn the physical copy into a permanently unlocked digital license.
- Check the game hub for an upgrade offer. Some PS4 discs can unlock or upgrade to a PS5 digital version, but eligibility is specific to the title and the offer shown for your account and region.
A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot use a physical PS4 disc, even when that game is otherwise fully compatible.
PS4-to-PS5 digital upgrades
A compatible PS4 disc can sometimes provide access to a PS5 digital version. This is not an automatic entitlement for every game: publishers decide whether a title has an upgrade path, and the offer can vary by game, edition and region. Open the game hub on PS5 and read the current offer instead of assuming that a disc includes an upgrade.

When the upgrade is based on a physical disc, the disc remains the proof of ownership. The PS5 digital version does not remove the hardware requirement for a drive or change the need to keep the qualifying disc available for launch.
Which PS5 models can read discs?
| PS5 configuration | Physical PS4 discs | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with built-in disc drive | Yes | Supports the PS4 disc procedure, subject to the individual game’s compatibility status. |
| Original PS5 Digital Edition | No | It was sold without a disc drive and cannot read PS4, PS3, PS2 or PS1 discs. |
| CFI-2000 model-group Digital Edition | Yes, with Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive | Verify that the console is in the CFI-2000 model group before buying the accessory. |
| CFI-7000 model group | Yes, with Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive | Drive compatibility is model-specific; confirm the exact model family. |
The CFI-ZDD1-series drive is not a universal add-on for every Digital Edition console. Check the model number printed on the console and Sony’s compatibility information before spending money on the accessory. If you regularly buy used discs or want to keep using a physical PS4 collection, include the cost and availability of the correct drive in your hardware decision.

- Unsupported titles: A small number of PS4 games are not compatible. The official list is the authority for a specific title.
- Errors or unexpected behavior: Sony warns that some compatible games can show errors or behave differently on PS5.
- Missing PS4 functions: Compatibility with the main game does not guarantee that every PS4 feature is available.
- Performance differences: Some games receive Game Boost, while others run without that enhancement. Do not assume a universal frame-rate or resolution improvement.
- Accessories and add-ons: A game can be playable while a particular PS4-era accessory, add-on or function is not. Check the title’s current compatibility notes before buying related hardware or downloadable content.
Disc PS5 versus Digital Edition: choosing for a physical library
| Decision factor | PS5 with a disc drive | Digital Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Use existing PS4 discs | Yes, for the overwhelming majority of titles | Not on the original model; possible on specified newer model groups after adding CFI-ZDD1 |
| Buy or borrow second-hand discs | Yes | Only after installing a compatible drive on supported newer models |
| Install a PS4 disc game | Insert the disc; PS5 installs it automatically the first time | Requires a compatible add-on drive and the disc |
| Use a PS4 disc upgrade offer | Possible when that title offers one | Possible only when the console can read the qualifying disc |
| Storage and updates | Disc games still install to PS5 storage and may need an update | Digital purchases and disc-based installs both use console storage |
Choose a disc-equipped PS5 if physical ownership, used-game purchases or an existing PS4 disc shelf is important. Choose a Digital Edition only if you are comfortable buying digitally, or if your newer supported model can accept the separately sold drive and that extra hardware fits your budget and plans.
Troubleshooting common compatibility questions
“My PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc is not recognized.”
This is expected behavior, not a setup fault. Those disc formats are not supported for direct playback on PS5. No installation or system setting can make the original disc playable.
“My PS4 disc does nothing.”
First verify that the console actually has a disc drive. If it is a Digital Edition, identify whether it belongs to the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model group and whether a CFI-ZDD1-series drive is installed. On a disc-equipped console, check the game’s status on Sony’s current compatibility list and allow the initial installation and any required update to complete.
“The PS4 game installs but shows an error.”
Sony acknowledges that some otherwise compatible PS4 titles may display errors or unexpected behavior. Confirm the title’s current compatibility notes and whether the missing item is a known PS4 function rather than a failed installation.
“The game offers no PS5 upgrade.”
Upgrade eligibility is title-specific. The absence of an offer does not mean the disc is defective; it means that game, edition or region may not provide a PS4-to-PS5 digital upgrade.
The practical answer
For physical backward compatibility, PS5 is effectively a PS4 machine with broad support, not a universal PlayStation disc player. PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs cannot run directly. Most PS4 discs work on a PS5 with a disc drive, install automatically on first use, may need an update, and must remain inserted during play. The original Digital Edition cannot read discs, while CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups can use Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive after you verify the exact model.
