The fruit grows in an empty block next to a mature stem, with suitable soil-like ground beneath it.
Where a pumpkin can grow
A mature pumpkin stem tries to create fruit in one of the blocks next to it. The target block must be empty, and the block directly beneath that space must be one of the following:

- Dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, or a grass block
- Farmland
- Podzol or mycelium
- Moss block or pale moss block
- Mud or muddy mangrove roots
A slab does not meet either condition when it occupies the fruit space or sits beneath that space as support. The Minecraft Wiki’s pumpkin and melon farming tutorial lists the valid support blocks and describes fruit forming in an adjacent space.
Can a slab cover the farm’s water?
Yes. A slab can be used to cover a water source in a farm layout; the tutorial also mentions a lily pad or carpet for this purpose. This is separate from the fruit-growth space: keep an adjacent empty block above a suitable support block so the stem has a place to produce a pumpkin.

Set up the stem and growth space
- Plant a pumpkin seed on farmland and leave at least one neighboring block available for fruit.
- Make sure the block under that neighboring space is one of the suitable blocks listed above—not a slab.
- Provide light level 9 at the stem block for growth. Hydrated farmland next to the stem improves growth and fruit-production rates.
- Wait for the stem to mature. Stems pass through eight growth phases; bone meal can speed stem growth, but it cannot force a pumpkin to appear.
These mechanics come from a community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorial, which does not specify an exact current Java or Bedrock version. Mojang’s MCPE-91021 bug-tracker record documents a historical Bedrock change associated with version 1.16 and a growth-rate parity issue; it is not a complete current-edition comparison. For version-specific builds, check the conditions in your edition and version.
