The studio postponed the planned September 23, 2025 launch after feedback on the reveal and Alpha test, saying it needed more time to improve the game. Later reporting placed launch in March 2026, and Bungie’s September 2026 update described the game as being in its post-launch phase.
Why did Bungie delay Marathon?
On June 17, 2025, Bungie announced it was moving Marathon from its planned September 23 release. The studio said player feedback and lessons from the Alpha test showed where the game needed more work. Bungie did not give a replacement release date in that announcement; it said it would share one later in the fall. Bungie’s June 17 announcement framed the decision as a chance to focus the game around survival under pressure, mystery and lore, demanding endgame challenges, and its first-person-shooter combat.

The delay was therefore more than a calendar adjustment: Bungie outlined changes to several parts of the experience. The following were priorities it announced at the time, not a guarantee that every element would arrive exactly as described.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- More demanding runs: tougher AI encounters, more strategic combat, new loot, and dynamic events intended to make successful runs more rewarding.
- Stronger atmosphere and storytelling: increased visual fidelity, more narrative and environmental storytelling, and a darker tone.
- Better play for smaller groups: improvements to the solo and duo experience.
- More player interaction: proximity chat.
When did Marathon come out?
The word “indefinitely” described the June 2025 announcement: Bungie had removed the September 23 date without naming a replacement. It should not be read as a current status. On December 16, 2025, TechRadar reported that Bungie had announced a March 2026 launch window and a $39.99 price. That is historical secondary reporting, not confirmation of a current price.

Bungie’s September 24, 2026 update then described the game “Since launch” and discussed its post-launch development. That later, dated Bungie update is the clearest official indication in the available record that Marathon had moved beyond the pre-release delay. It also set out future plans, which should be distinguished from features already delivered.
How Bungie said Marathon would evolve
In its September 2026 update, Bungie described a sequence of planned changes extending into 2027. It presented them as roadmap steps, not completed releases.

| Planned step | What Bungie said it would include |
|---|---|
| October refresh | An announced refresh; the update did not specify further details here. |
| December: Symbiosis | The game’s first permanent PvE experience, an expanded Perimeter, a new shell, improved onboarding, and a social space. |
| Further evolution in March | A connection between PvE, PvP, and PvEvP, alongside deeper progression, more narrative, new enemies, and a new zone. |
Bungie’s launch retrospective also discussed experiments aimed at supporting different play styles, including PvE and PvP-lite modes. The studio said those ideas were still in development and could change as it learned from later seasons. That makes the broader shift clear: Bungie was describing an evolving game, not a fixed set of promised additions.

The delay began with a reassessment prompted by Alpha feedback, but Bungie’s later plans point to a wider effort to broaden the experience beyond extraction-focused play. PC Gamer attributed this explanation to Marathon creative director Julia Nardin: “We all thought we were gonna bring extraction to the masses, and we didn’t. We built very much an extraction shooter as you’ve ever seen one.” PC Gamer’s report provides that context; it does not, by itself, establish how successful the changes were.

Bungie Help’s surfaced Marathon FAQ says the game is in development and has no release date. That statement conflicts with Bungie’s later September 24, 2026 post discussing the game since launch. For current context, the dated post-launch update is the more relevant source; the FAQ wording appears stale.
