Its card text overrides the usual four-copy limit, but it does not override format restrictions. Commander is the key exception: its singleton rule does not allow repeated copies.
Which Cid card can you play more than four copies of?
The exception applies specifically to Cid, Timeless Artificer. Its card text says, “A deck can have any number of cards named Cid, Timeless Artificer.” Wizards of the Coast confirms that this allows more than four copies in constructed play, while stressing that it does not bypass format legality. Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY release notes provide the card text and rules explanation.
It is not a blanket rule for cards that depict Cid or use another Cid name. The release notes list Cid, Freeflier Pilot separately; they do not give that card the any-number clause. Check the exact card name and its own rules text rather than relying on the character depicted.
Does the exception apply to Commander?
No. Commander is a singleton format: apart from basic lands, a deck generally may not contain more than one card with the same name. The deck has 99 cards plus its commander. Cid, Timeless Artificer’s any-number text does not remove that format rule. See Wizards’ Commander format rules.

| Format context | Can you include multiple Cid, Timeless Artificer cards? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Constructed format that otherwise permits the card | Yes; the card text permits any number. | It overrides the usual four-copy ceiling, not format legality. |
| Commander | No; duplicate copies are not allowed. | Commander’s singleton rule still applies. |
Do alternate art or another Cid name change the rule?
No. Wizards says that for deck construction and game rules, only the card name in the secondary title bar counts. Alternate art does not make a copy a different card name, and a character’s alternate identity is not a loophole for duplicating cards. Wizards’ collecting coverage reports 15 alternate-art variants for one uncommon Cid, Timeless Artificer version, but those treatments do not change how the card is named for deck construction. Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY collecting article covers the variants.
Why build around Cid, Timeless Artificer?
Cid is a white-blue legendary Human Artificer. Its static ability rewards artifact creatures and Heroes according to the number of Artificers you control and in your graveyard, giving an artifact-focused deck a reason to develop that creature type as well as its artifacts.

That is a limited-play context, not evidence that a constructed deck built around Cid is competitive. Read the FINAL FANTASY prerelease guide.

What to check before adding copies
- Confirm the exact card is Cid, Timeless Artificer, not another Cid card.
- Check that the card is legal in the format you plan to play; the any-number clause does not override that format’s legality rules.
- If you are building Commander, follow singleton deck construction rather than the card’s constructed-play exception.
- For alternate-art versions, use the secondary title-bar name when checking deck construction.
