Can You Connect Your Nintendo Switch to a Tablet?

You can display Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch 2 gameplay on a compatible tablet with a dock and HDMI capture card. Switch Lite cannot output gameplay this way.

Yes—but usually not with a direct USB-C cable. To display Nintendo Switch gameplay on an iPad or Android tablet, use the console’s dock, an HDMI cable, a USB HDMI capture card, and a compatible viewing app. The Nintendo Switch Lite is the important exception: it does not support TV-mode video output, so a normal capture-card setup cannot display its gameplay on a tablet.

The connection you need

The reliable signal path is:

Switch
  ↓
Switch dock
  ↓ HDMI
Capture card HDMI IN
  ↓ USB data connection
Tablet USB-C port
  ↓
Capture/viewing app

A capture card converts the dock’s HDMI signal into a USB video stream that a compatible tablet app can receive. A tablet’s USB-C port alone does not guarantee video input, USB-host support, sufficient bandwidth, or compatibility with capture devices.

Which Switch models work?

Console Tablet gameplay display? Main requirement
Nintendo Switch Yes Dock, HDMI capture card, compatible tablet and app
Nintendo Switch OLED Model Yes Dock, HDMI capture card, compatible tablet and app
Nintendo Switch Lite No, through standard video output It lacks TV-mode video output
Nintendo Switch 2 Yes Switch 2 dock, HDMI capture card, compatible tablet and app

The Switch Lite’s limitation is hardware-based. A different HDMI cable, adapter, or app cannot create an HDMI signal that the console does not provide. Nintendo’s guidance excludes the Switch Lite from HDMI-conversion methods (Nintendo support).

What you need

Original Switch or Switch OLED

  • The console and its dock
  • The Nintendo AC adapter connected to the dock
  • An HDMI cable
  • An HDMI-to-USB capture card
  • A USB data cable from the capture card to the tablet
  • A compatible capture or viewing app
  • Optionally, a powered USB-C hub with USB 3 data and USB-C Power Delivery

Switch 2

  • Switch 2 console and Switch 2 dock
  • Switch 2 AC adapter
  • A suitable, preferably Ultra High Speed, HDMI cable
  • An HDMI capture card
  • A USB data connection to the tablet
  • A compatible app

Nintendo’s current Switch 2 TV-mode instructions require the Switch 2 dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable. Do not assume that the original Switch dock or original Switch AC adapter is interchangeable for Switch 2 TV mode; Nintendo says the original dock is not compatible and the original adapter cannot provide the required TV-mode power (Nintendo support).

How to connect a Switch to an iPad

A USB-C iPad is the most straightforward tablet route, but not every USB-C iPad is suitable. For its current iPad capture workflow, Elgato requires a USB-C iPad running iPadOS 17 or later and a compatible Elgato capture device (Elgato’s requirements).

Elgato specifically lists the 10th- and 11th-generation iPads with A14/A16 chips as USB 2.0-limited and incompatible with its capture devices in the Elgato Capture app. Check the exact iPad model and its USB speed before buying a capture card. Elgato’s compatible-device information includes products such as the HD60 S+, HD60 X, 4K X, Cam Link, Cam Link 4K, and Game Capture Neo, with some setups requiring a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter (compatible devices).

For supported Elgato hardware, use the Elgato Capture app. Genki Studio is another iPad option for Genki ShadowCast and compatible USB UVC input devices, according to its App Store listing.

How to connect a Switch to an Android tablet

Android support varies substantially by tablet, Android version, USB implementation, capture-card chipset, app, and available power. Before buying anything, confirm that the tablet has:

  • USB-C with USB host or OTG support
  • Enough USB bandwidth for the capture device
  • The ability to power the connected capture card, or support for a powered hub
  • A compatible UVC viewer or capture app

UVC means the capture device presents itself as a standard USB video source. It improves the chances of working with a generic viewer, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every Android tablet. Prefer a capture card whose manufacturer documents Android or UVC support for your intended setup.

Exact setup steps

  1. Power the dock. Connect the Switch dock to its AC adapter. For Switch 2, use the Switch 2 dock and adapter.
  2. Connect HDMI. Run an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
  3. Dock the console. Insert the Switch and confirm that its display changes to docked TV mode.
  4. Connect USB to the tablet. Use a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable. If the capture card has USB-A, use a suitable USB-C-to-USB-A adapter or hub.
  5. Open the app. Launch a compatible capture app and grant USB access if requested.
  6. Choose the capture input. The app should detect the card and show the Switch signal.
  7. Configure audio and display. Select full-screen mode if available, check the aspect ratio, and verify whether audio is routed to the tablet speakers or headphones.

If the capture card has HDMI passthrough, you can also connect its HDMI OUT to a TV or monitor:

Switch dock HDMI OUT → capture card HDMI IN
capture card HDMI OUT → TV or monitor
capture card USB → tablet

Passthrough can provide a low-latency display for playing while the tablet previews or records the signal. It does not make the tablet’s software preview delay-free.

Choosing a capture card

Look for these specifications:

  • HDMI input and USB output
  • UVC support when using a generic tablet app
  • USB 3 support where required by the device
  • 1080p60 support for smooth Switch gameplay
  • HDMI passthrough if you want to use a TV or monitor simultaneously
  • Documented iPad or Android compatibility
  • Power behavior suitable for use with a tablet

A dedicated branded capture card usually offers better documentation, firmware, apps, passthrough, and support, but costs more and may include computer-focused features you do not need. A low-cost UVC dongle can be adequate for basic viewing, but image quality, latency, audio, power handling, and compatibility are less predictable. “4K” on an inexpensive adapter may refer to passthrough or input support rather than 4K capture.

Examples of documented products include the Elgato Game Capture 4K S, which is positioned for USB-C/UVC, iPad, and Switch 2 use; the Elgato Cam Link 4K, which requires USB 3; and the Elgato Game Capture Neo. Check current prices and compatibility on the manufacturer’s page because availability and pricing change.

Why the setup may not work

“The tablet has USB-C, but nothing happens”

  • The port may be USB 2.0-only.
  • The cable may be charge-only or too slow.
  • The tablet may lack USB host support.
  • The app may not support the capture card or its UVC implementation.
  • The capture card may require more power than the tablet supplies.
  • The app may not have permission to access the USB device.

Reconnect everything, try another known-good USB data cable, close and reopen the app, and use a powered hub if the tablet reports insufficient power.

“I connected HDMI directly to the tablet”

This normally fails because most tablets do not have HDMI input. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter generally sends video out from the tablet to a display; it does not turn the tablet into an HDMI monitor. The same issue applies to most laptops: an HDMI port is commonly output-only, and Nintendo says a computer would need a genuine HDMI input (Nintendo support).

“I connected the Switch directly to USB-C”

For the regular Switch models, do not expect a USB-C-to-USB-C cable to provide the normal video-output path. Use the dock’s HDMI output and a capture device instead. Experimental third-party accessories may have their own requirements, but they should not be treated as a generally supported solution.

“The screen is black”

  1. Ensure the console is seated correctly in the dock.
  2. Confirm the dock has power.
  3. Check that HDMI runs from the dock to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
  4. Reconnect the capture card to the tablet with a data-capable cable.
  5. Confirm that the app supports the device.
  6. Test another HDMI cable or display.

Switch gameplay is not normally the same HDCP problem as protected streaming video, but individual capture cards and apps can still have HDMI compatibility issues.

“There is video but no sound”

Check the tablet volume and app mute setting, then test headphones. The app may need an audio-routing option, or the tablet, hub, and capture card may not be passing audio correctly. On supported iPad setups, Elgato documents routing captured audio to the iPad speakers (Elgato’s iPad setup).

Is a tablet good enough for playing?

Usually, the biggest compromise is latency. The tablet sees a software preview of the captured video, so the image can appear after the action on the Switch. That may be acceptable for turn-based and casual games, but it can be uncomfortable for competitive games, rhythm games, and precision platformers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDMI passthrough is the better arrangement when available: play on the connected TV or monitor and use the tablet for recording, streaming, or monitoring. A capture card advertised with low-latency passthrough does not necessarily provide a low-latency tablet preview.

Also consider aspect-ratio scaling, audio delay, battery drain, and heat. The tablet powers its own display and may also power the capture card. A USB-C hub with simultaneous USB 3 data and Power Delivery can allow charging while connected, but verify those specifications rather than choosing a hub solely because it includes HDMI.

Better alternatives

  • Switch screen: The simplest and lowest-latency option, and the only practical built-in display for Switch Lite.
  • Portable HDMI monitor: Usually simpler and more responsive than a tablet capture setup because it accepts HDMI directly. See portable-monitor ranges from ASUS, Lenovo, or ViewSonic.
  • TV or monitor: The most direct docked setup, without tablet app, USB bandwidth, or tablet-battery complications.
  • Laptop: Use a capture card; do not assume the laptop’s built-in HDMI port is an input.

If the goal is simply to play on a larger portable screen, a portable monitor is generally the more suitable purchase. Choose the tablet-and-capture route when recording, streaming, portability, or using the tablet for other tasks matters as much as the display.

Other meanings of “connect”

A tablet can also be involved in transferring screenshots or videos, using Nintendo-related smart-device functions, or acting as a controller through particular third-party arrangements. Those are separate from displaying live Switch gameplay. The capture-card method described here is specifically for receiving and viewing the console’s docked HDMI video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect a Switch directly to an iPad?

Not as a generally reliable display setup. Use the Switch dock’s HDMI output, an HDMI capture card, and a compatible iPad app.

Can I use a USB-C-to-HDMI cable?

Usually no. Most such cables send video out from a USB-C device; they do not send HDMI into a tablet.

Can I use a Switch Lite?

Not through the standard external-display or capture-card method. Switch Lite lacks TV-mode video output.

Can I connect without the dock?

For the normal, broadly supported setup, use the dock’s HDMI output. Do not assume a direct USB-C cable will replace it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an Android tablet work?

Yes, if its USB-C port supports USB host/OTG, it can power or connect to the capture card, and a compatible UVC app is available. Exact support varies.

Why is the image delayed?

The tablet is showing a software capture preview. Use HDMI passthrough to a TV or monitor for more responsive gameplay.

Why is there no sound?

Check app mute controls, tablet volume, audio routing, headphones, and whether the hub and capture card pass audio correctly.

Can I charge the tablet while playing?

Often, with a USB-C hub that supports both USB 3 data and Power Delivery. The tablet, hub, and capture card must all support the arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the tablet as a controller?

That is a separate function and is not provided by the HDMI capture setup. Compatibility depends on the specific app and controller arrangement.

Can I record or stream Switch gameplay to the tablet?

Often yes, if the tablet app supports recording or streaming. The tablet preview may still be too delayed for playing competitively.
