No. A PS5 Platinum trophy does not automatically require the hardest difficulty. PlayStation assigns trophy conditions to each individual game, and its support guidance says that the number, grades and requirements vary from game to game. One title may require a named setting such as Crushing or Veteran; another may have no difficulty-related trophy at all; a third may allow the Platinum on its easiest setting. Before you begin, open the exact trophy list for your edition on the console and read every difficulty-related entry. That check is more reliable than assuming a PS5, PS4, remake, remaster or DLC list follows the same rules.
Does every PS5 Platinum require the hardest difficulty?
No. The PS5 platform itself imposes no universal “hardest difficulty” condition. The developer decides which objectives unlock bronze, silver, gold and Platinum trophies for a particular list. PlayStation Support explains that trophies can be earned for objectives such as clearing levels, finding collectibles or completing other tasks, and that both the trophy grades and the conditions vary by game.

That means “Platinum” describes the top award in a game’s trophy list, not a standard level of challenge shared by every game. Difficulty can be part of the requirement, but it can also be irrelevant. Treat the individual list shown on your console as the governing document for your run.
How do I check the requirement on a PS5?
Use the console’s own trophy information before committing to a route. Sony’s support instructions provide this path:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- From the PS5 home screen, open your profile picture.
- Choose Trophies.
- Select the game you intend to complete.
- Open the relevant trophy details and view the full list.
Read the wording of every hidden and visible trophy, not just the Platinum description. Search for a named setting such as Hard, Veteran, Crushing, Survivor or Nightmare, as well as phrases such as “complete the game on” or “finish in this mode.” A trophy can refer to a separate challenge mode rather than the ordinary highest setting in the options menu.
- Confirm that the list is the PS5 version you will play.
- Check whether a separate PS4, remaster, remake or downloadable-content list is displayed.
- Note whether the wording describes one difficulty, several difficulties or a special unlockable mode.
- Look for online, missable, collectible, speedrun and challenge trophies that may affect your route more than difficulty does.
If a guide and the console list disagree, use the in-console wording as your final check. Guides can lag behind a patch, a newly released DLC list or a separate PS5 edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A high setting is required only when at least one trophy explicitly makes it an objective, or when a named challenge mode is part of the list. The requirement may be attached to the Platinum indirectly: you might need to earn a gold trophy for finishing the campaign on that setting, and the Platinum then arrives after all other trophies are complete.
Named settings
Look for the exact name used by the game. “Hard” is not interchangeable with “Crushing,” and “very hard” may be a custom label rather than the highest selectable setting. If the trophy says “complete on Crushing,” selecting Hard will not satisfy that wording unless the game’s own description says the requirements stack or otherwise allows it.
Separate challenge modes
Some lists distinguish the normal campaign difficulties from a challenge mode that unlocks later. A trophy for a timed trial, an extra campaign or a mode with special rules can be more demanding than the ordinary hardest setting, even though the menu does not call it “hardest.” Treat that mode as its own requirement and check when it becomes available.

| Game example | Difficulty condition reported by the cited guide | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End | The Platinum route requires completing the game on Crushing. | Some lists tie Platinum progress to a high named difficulty. |
| Horizon Forbidden West | The base-game set has no difficulty-based trophies. | You can choose a preferred difficulty without blocking the base-game Platinum. |
| God of War Ragnarök | A cited guide says the Platinum is possible on the easiest difficulty and with accessibility options. | Some games explicitly leave difficulty and assist choices open. |
These are examples, not a rulebook for other games. Even a sequel can change its trophy conditions, and a remaster or PS5-native list may not match the original release.
Do difficulty trophies stack?
Sometimes, but the answer is controlled by the game’s wording and implementation. In a stacking system, finishing on a higher setting also awards trophies for lower settings. In a non-stacking system, you may need separate runs, or you may need to replay selected chapters after changing the difficulty.
Before starting, determine which of these patterns applies:
- Stacked completion: one qualifying run awards the high-difficulty trophy and the lower-difficulty awards beneath it.
- Single-tier wording: the list names only one setting, so lower settings may not matter at all.
- Separate runs: trophies are awarded for distinct settings and do not combine.
- Mode-specific completion: a challenge or New Game Plus mode has its own condition that normal campaign completion cannot satisfy.
Do not infer stacking from the difficulty menu. Check the trophy descriptions and a current guide for your exact edition, then plan the fewest safe playthroughs. If the wording is ambiguous, make a manual save before the final mission or mode completion so you can recover without losing progress.
Can I change the difficulty and still earn the Platinum?
Changing difficulty is safe only when the game’s trophy rules permit it. If no trophy references difficulty, the setting generally does not determine the Platinum. If a trophy requires uninterrupted completion on a named setting, lowering the difficulty can invalidate that requirement even if the game lets you change it.
Check for restrictions in three places: the trophy description, the game’s difficulty menu and the guide for the specific list. Some games track the highest setting reached; others require every relevant mission to be completed on the target setting. A pause-menu change may therefore be harmless in one game and disqualifying in another.

Also distinguish difficulty from accessibility. The cited God of War Ragnarök guide reports that its Platinum can be earned on the easiest setting and with accessibility options, but that does not establish the same policy for another title. Accessibility features can include aiming assists, navigation help, damage adjustments or other systems; only the game’s own trophy rules tell you whether they remain compatible.
What can block a Platinum besides difficulty?
Difficulty is only one possible part of a completion plan. A game with no difficulty trophies can still demand a long or easily missed set of other objectives.
Missable trophies
A decision, chapter or collectible may become unavailable after a story point. Mark those entries before your first run and keep a backup save when the game permits it. If a guide labels a trophy missable, follow its timing rather than assuming chapter select will restore every opportunity.
Collectibles and cleanup
Lists may require every collectible, upgrade or optional activity. Decide whether to collect during the story or reserve a cleanup run. A chapter-select menu can help, but only if the game tracks the item globally and the trophy description does not require a single uninterrupted playthrough.
Online requirements
Online trophies can depend on servers, matchmaking or another player. Verify that the required mode is still available for your region and edition before you invest in an otherwise complete run. An offline Platinum route cannot substitute for an explicitly online objective.
Speedruns and challenge goals
A time limit, score target or special combat challenge can be harder than the campaign on its highest setting. Read the conditions precisely: some timers count only active play, while others include loading or deaths. The list may also require a separate challenge mode rather than a normal story completion.

Long grinds
Reaching a level, currency total or upgrade threshold can take longer than finishing the story. Track cumulative progress and avoid spending a resource that a later trophy requires. These requirements are independent of whether the game is set to Easy or Hard.
Why does the PS5, PS4 or remaster version matter?
Trophy lists are attached to a game edition, not just to a franchise name. A PS5-native list can differ from the PS4 list, and a remake, remaster or DLC can introduce a separate set of trophies with different difficulty conditions. Your previous unlocks may not answer what the new list requires.
Compare the title and edition shown in the trophy menu with the game installed on the console. If a guide says “base game,” confirm that it is not describing an expansion. If it refers to a PS4 list, do not assume its difficulty trophies carry over to the PS5 list. This version check is especially important when an upgrade creates a second stackable Platinum.
What is the safest way to plan a Platinum run?
Start with the list, then choose a difficulty that satisfies its strictest requirement while minimizing repeat work.

- Map missables. Identify story choices, collectibles and activities that cannot be revisited.
- Separate online work. Complete server-dependent tasks while the required features are available.
- Choose accessibility options. Use them when the game’s trophy rules allow them and they help you meet the objective.
- Plan cleanup. Decide whether one run, New Game Plus or multiple runs is the least risky route.
- Recheck before the finale. Review the list after patches or DLC and before locking in the final mission or challenge.
This process prevents a common mistake: selecting the hardest setting first and discovering later that the list’s real obstacle was a missable or online trophy.

- Confirm that the mode was the required campaign or challenge mode.
- Check whether a final results screen or post-game save is needed before the trophy triggers.
- Sync trophies from the console after the completion event and restart the game if the list remains pending.
- Consult a current guide for known edition-specific requirements, especially after a patch.
If the trophy still does not appear, preserve your save and avoid overwriting the completion slot. A repeat of the final objective may resolve a delayed trigger, but the appropriate recovery depends on the game’s own tracking system.
Is there a universal list of PS5 games that require the hardest setting?
No authoritative platform-wide percentage or master list establishes how many PS5 Platinums require the hardest difficulty. The available official guidance supports a game-by-game answer, while individual guides document examples. Any list that claims a universal share should state its sample, edition scope and date; otherwise it cannot be applied safely to your title.

What is the practical answer for your next Platinum?
Do not select the hardest difficulty merely because you want the Platinum. Select the setting that the exact trophy list requires—if it requires one at all—and verify stacking, version, accessibility and non-difficulty objectives before you begin. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarök show the three outcomes you can encounter: a named high setting, no difficulty condition, or an easiest-setting route with accessibility support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I earn a PS5 Platinum on Easy mode?
Yes, when the game’s trophy list has no higher-difficulty condition or explicitly permits an easier setting. The cited guide for God of War Ragnarök reports an easiest-difficulty route, but that permission cannot be assumed for another game.
Does changing difficulty erase trophies I already earned?
Previously unlocked trophies normally remain on your profile, but changing settings can prevent a still-pending completion trophy from unlocking if it requires an uninterrupted named difficulty. Check the individual game’s wording before making the change.
Do PS5 and PS4 versions share the same Platinum requirements?
Not necessarily. Each edition can have its own trophy list, and a remake, remaster or DLC may add a separate set with different conditions. Select the edition shown in your console’s Trophies screen before following a guide.
Are accessibility options allowed for every Platinum?
There is no platform-wide rule. Some games allow assists without affecting trophies, while others restrict specific modifiers; rely on that title’s trophy descriptions and current edition-specific guidance.
What if the hardest setting is optional but the Platinum still feels difficult?
Focus on the list’s non-difficulty workload: missable choices, collectibles, online tasks, speedruns, challenge modes and long grinds can determine the real time and risk. Build your route around those objectives instead of raising the setting unnecessarily.
