You can’t fish with the ordinary Fishing Rod in Baldur’s Gate 3’s documented base-game item system. The rod is a miscellaneous item for barter or sale, and the reviewed item information describes no fishing interaction, bait system, or designated fishing spots. Don’t spend time searching shorelines for a fishing prompt that the sources do not document.
Can you fish in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The ordinary Fishing Rod is listed as a common miscellaneous item, primarily useful for bartering or selling—not as equipment for a fishing activity. Its item description reads: “Rusted and slick with grime. The lure may be more valuable than the rod itself.” That is flavor text, not evidence of a usable lure or fishing mechanic. The Fishing Rod item entry was last edited on 12 September 2026.
The entry does not describe casting, bait, or a fishing interaction. The available item information therefore does not support instructions for fishing in the base game. This is limited to the documented game item and does not make a claim about mods or future updates.
Where can you find the ordinary Fishing Rod?
The item entry gives its general availability as “Throughout the game as set-dressing and random loot.” That means you may see it among environmental objects or loot; it is not a list of fishing spots or proof that the nearby water is interactive. No specific coordinates or designated fishing locations are established by the entry. See the item’s location information.

Is the Fishing Rod of Alertness used for fishing?
No. The similarly named Fishing Rod of Alertness is a separate uncommon miscellaneous item associated with the Surprised condition. Mattis sells it at his shop in Last Light Inn. Its listed effect says, “The wielder of this rod cannot be Surprised, unless something unexpected happens,” but the item page notes that it does not actually prevent the wielder from being Surprised. Neither its name nor its listed effect indicates a fishing function. The Fishing Rod of Alertness entry was last edited on 13 September 2026.
What about bait and fish?
Bait
The reviewed Fishing Rod information does not document bait types, where to obtain bait, or any bait requirement. There are no supported casting controls or bait instructions to follow.

Fish as food
Fish appears as an inventory consumable that can be used as Camp Supplies, with a listed supply value of 4. Its item entry does not connect it to catching fish with the Fishing Rod, so finding fish as food should not be taken as evidence of a rod-based fishing mechanic. See the Fish item entry.

The game has an item named Fishing Rod and an inventory food item named Fish, but those names do not establish an in-game fishing system. The item pages are community-maintained references, not official Larian documentation. The findings here describe what those entries document; they do not establish why fishing is absent or rule on modded gameplay.
