Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second game in Square Enix’s three-part reimagining of the 1997 Final Fantasy VII. It follows Cloud and his companions after they escape Midgar and pursue Sephiroth across the wider world. Square Enix says new players can start here, though playing Remake first gives the story its intended chronological context.
What is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a full second installment in Square Enix’s remake project—not a remaster, expansion, or complete retelling of the original game. The project reimagines the 1997 Final Fantasy VII with additional original elements. The first game, Final Fantasy VII Remake, covers the party’s escape from Midgar; Rebirth follows the journey beyond the city. Square Enix describes a third game as the trilogy’s final entry. Square Enix’s 2023 announcement calls Rebirth the second title and places its story between the start of the journey outside Midgar and the midpoint of the original game. The publisher’s official story page specifies that the account runs through the Forgotten Capital.

What is the story about?
After leaving Midgar, Cloud and his friends travel across the planet in pursuit of Sephiroth, a figure connected to Cloud’s past who seeks control of the planet. The story also follows Zack Fair in circumstances presented in parallel with the group’s journey. That is the spoiler-light premise; the game’s major developments are best experienced without advance explanation.
Who are the characters?
Cloud is the protagonist, and Sephiroth is the party’s target. The central group includes Tifa, Barret, Aerith, and Red XIII, with Yuffie and Cait Sith among the companions who join them. Square Enix’s Japanese character page identifies these seven as controllable characters.

Do you need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake first?
No. Producer Yoshinori Kitase says Rebirth can be enjoyed as a standalone adventure and includes a recap of the previous game for players who want more context. Still, playing Remake first is the clearest choice if you want the story in sequence and already know the characters and events leading up to the escape from Midgar.
“FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH can be enjoyed on its own as a standalone adventure, with the party leaving Midgar to explore the wide world beyond. But for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the story, a recap of the previous game will also be provided.”

What is the gameplay and world like?
Square Enix describes a broad world to explore, reimagined locations from the original, party synergy abilities, side stories, and mini-games. Director Naoki Hamaguchi estimated nearly 100 hours of adventure in the 2023 launch announcement. That is his launch-era estimate, not a guaranteed playtime or measured average; actual time depends on how much optional content a player takes on.
What platforms is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on?
In an announcement dated June 5, 2026, Square Enix lists Rebirth for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, and PC. That announcement also says the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox versions have a free demo covering Chapters 1 and 2, with progress carrying over. Availability can change; check the current platform store or Square Enix listing before buying or downloading.

Which edition should you choose?
Choose based first on platform and whether you want the earlier story; consider physical extras only if they matter to you. In its September 2023 announcement, Square Enix described a Standard Edition, a Deluxe Edition with a mini-soundtrack CD, artbook, and steelbook, and a Collector’s Edition with a Sephiroth statue and Deluxe contents. It also announced digital editions and a Twin Pack with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. These are launch-announced edition details, not confirmation that any particular edition is currently stocked or sold by a retailer. Check the current listing for platform, contents, and availability.
How does Rebirth fit into the original story?
The remake project divides and reimagines the story rather than reproducing the entire 1997 game in one release. Remake covers the escape from Midgar, Rebirth takes the party’s journey through the midpoint of the original story, and a third game is planned as the trilogy’s finale. Square Enix reported in 2026 that Rebirth had received more than 125 perfect media scores and 40 Game of the Year awards; these are the publisher’s figures.
