Sometimes, but a game’s shutdown does not automatically guarantee a refund. Your options depend on your country, what you bought, when you bought it, and whether you paid through a game store or directly to the publisher. Start with the transaction receipt and the refund rules for the seller and region involved.
What affects whether you can get your money back?
Consider each purchase separately. A virtual-currency pack, a one-time item, a subscription, and access to a game may be treated differently. The key question is not just whether the game closed, but what you paid for and whether that content or service is now unavailable or fails to meet the applicable requirements.

- Your location: Consumer law and platform policies differ by country or region.
- Who processed the payment: The relevant contact may be an app store, console or PC storefront, or the game publisher.
- When and how you paid: Some policies cover only purchases made through a particular channel or from a specified date.
- What remains usable: A fully unavailable purchase may raise different issues from content that is partly usable or still delivered as described.
There is no universal shutdown-related refund rule, and the sources below do not establish the rules for every country, storefront, game, or contract.
How to request a refund
- Find the transaction. Check your receipt or account purchase history. Record the date, item, amount, game, and payment channel.
- Identify the seller or payment channel. Check whether the charge went through an app store, console or PC store, or the publisher. Use the refund process for the channel that handled the purchase, and check its policy for your location.
- Explain what became unavailable. Include when the shutdown or feature closure took effect, what you purchased, and whether any part of it can still be used. A shutdown alone does not settle whether a particular legal or policy test is met.
- Keep supporting records. Save the receipt, shutdown notice, purchase terms if available, and support correspondence. If local law provides a refund, you can ask for payment through the original method.
- If the request is denied, check local options. Look up the consumer-protection route for your jurisdiction. A chargeback, complaint, or other remedy is not guaranteed by the sources cited here.
Examples: UK law and store refund policies
United Kingdom: statutory digital-content remedies
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides remedies when digital content fails to meet statutory requirements. Whether a particular shutdown means those requirements were not met depends on the facts; the closure itself does not establish entitlement.

Where a consumer is entitled to a statutory refund, section 45 says the trader must pay without undue delay and within 14 days after agreeing that the consumer is entitled to it. The refund is generally made using the original payment method unless the consumer expressly agrees otherwise. This deadline applies after entitlement is agreed; it does not mean every shutdown qualifies.
The Act’s explanatory notes also discuss the amount of content affected and trader-specific in-game currency. For example, where a statutory refund is due for money paid to a trader for its own virtual currency, returning only that currency may not meet the requirement to return money through the original payment method. The appropriate application depends on the purchase and circumstances.

In a written answer published on 11 March 2025, the UK government said it had no plans at that time to amend consumer law on digital obsolescence and noted that UK law did not require software companies to support older product versions. That dated statement is not a decision about an individual refund claim.

Google says most Google Play purchases are not refunded under its general policy, although exceptions apply. For games and in-app purchases, its EEA/UK guidance says that agreeing to immediate access to digital content waives the automatic statutory withdrawal right. It also says a refund or another remedy may be available when digital content is defective, unavailable, or does not perform as stated; the policy distinguishes digital content from digital services.

The regional policy applies to people in the EEA or UK and purchases made on or after 28 March 2018. Google says the rules can vary according to what was bought, when and how it was paid for, and where the customer lives. It also notes that contacting the app developer may be the quickest way to resolve some purchase issues. Do not assume this regional policy applies outside the EEA and UK.
Apple: submit a request, but approval is not assured
Apple says some App Store and other Apple-service purchases may be eligible for a refund. To request one, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “Request a refund,” select a reason and the item, then submit. Apple says it provides an update within 24 to 48 hours; that is an update timeframe, not a promise that the request will be approved or that the money will arrive within that period. Regional consumer-law protections may also apply. Apple does not say that a game shutdown alone guarantees approval.
