Sometimes. If a developer marks a Steam Playtest Not Playable, Steam will not launch it while that setting remains in place. But that alone does not automatically revoke access already granted to you. The developer can make the Playtest available again, while a separate reset removes participants and disables Playtest keys.
What happens when a Steam Playtest ends?
Steam Playtest is a separate app associated with the main game, with its own access controls. The developer controls whether that Playtest is available. Steam’s documentation says that after deactivation, Steam will not launch the Playtest app; it does not say that marking it Not Playable automatically revokes a key already granted to a player. Valve’s Steam Playtest documentation describes these settings.

What if the developer reopens the Playtest?
If the developer makes the Playtest Visible again, players who had already been granted access keep it. They do not need to sign up again or be admitted a second time. This applies to access already granted; it does not guarantee that a particular Playtest will reopen or remain available.
How does a reset differ from ending the test?
A reset is a separate, consequential action—not simply another name for making the Playtest Not Playable. Steam says resetting removes participants and waiting players, disables all Playtest keys (including unused keys), and archives pending friend invites. Steam describes the reset as irreversible. If a Playtest has been reset, do not assume an earlier entitlement or key will still provide access.

Does a Playtest key work like a main-game beta key?
No. Steam Playtest has its own app and access controls. Steam documents release override keys for testing the main game separately; those keys may be revoked using Valve’s key-banning tool. That process should not be confused with ordinary Steam Playtest access. See Valve’s Testing On Steam documentation for the distinction.
How can you check whether a particular Playtest is still available?
- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for its Playtest availability or signup option.
- Check the developer’s announcements for a notice that the test has ended, reopened, or changed access.
- If Steam will not launch the Playtest, check those sources for its current status; Steam’s general documentation cannot tell you what setting the developer has chosen for an individual game.
There is no universal end date or duration for Steam Playtests in the documentation. Availability depends on the developer’s settings and can change.
