Yes—if you’re playing Minecraft Bedrock or Minecraft Education. Both include tools for creating and customizing NPCs, but the setup differs by edition. The built-in NPC editor is not part of base vanilla gameplay, and the instructions below do not apply to Java Edition.

Which Minecraft editions let you make an NPC?

Edition or route What you can do What you need
Bedrock Edition Use the in-game NPC editor to set a name and skin, add dialogue, and configure commands or command buttons. Creative mode, cheats enabled, and operator permissions, according to Microsoft Learn’s Create a Custom NPC tutorial.
Minecraft Education Create an NPC with a name, skin, dialogue, and URL or command buttons. World Builder permission to place and edit NPCs, according to the Minecraft Education support guide.
Java Edition The built-in Bedrock and Education NPC editors are not available through the workflows covered here. The official sources cited here do not establish a current Java Edition method.

Minecraft’s creator article, “Beginners guide to adding NPCs,” says NPCs are not part of base vanilla gameplay. It reports that NPCs were added to Bedrock in version 1.16.0; that version detail does not mean the Bedrock editor is available in Java.

How to create a custom NPC in Bedrock Edition

  1. Meet the prerequisites. Switch to Creative mode, enable cheats, and make sure you have operator permissions in the world.
  2. Get an NPC spawn egg. Find one in the Creative menu, or use the documented command /give @p spawn_egg 1 51.
  3. Place the NPC. Use the spawn egg where you want the character to appear, then interact with the NPC to open its editing interface.
  4. Customize the character. Set its name and choose from the skins available in the editor. Microsoft’s tutorial lists a maximum name length of 32 characters.
  5. Add dialogue or actions. Enter the text you want players to see and, if useful, add commands or command buttons. The tutorial says the basic dialogue box supports 307 characters before text runs off-screen.
  6. Choose when commands run. Depending on the advanced settings, an NPC command can run when dialogue opens, when it closes, or when a player presses a button. Button mode lets the player choose an action before its associated command runs.

Keep commands limited to the action you intend. Before adding one that changes or damages the world, explain what it does to players and check the command carefully.

How to create an NPC in Minecraft Education

  1. Check your permission. You need World Builder permission to place and edit NPCs.
  2. Select the NPC spawn egg. The Education support guide says it is available from the Creative Tools tab.
  3. Place and customize the NPC. Give it a name and skin, then write its dialogue.
  4. Add buttons if needed. The guide describes up to six buttons in any combination of URL and command buttons. A URL button opens the link in the user’s default browser.

Can you make an NPC with branching dialogue?

Yes, but branching dialogue uses a more advanced Bedrock content-authoring method rather than just the in-game NPC editor. Microsoft’s NPC dialogue guide describes a behavior pack with a dialogue/scene.json file. Scene tags identify dialogue scenes; the /dialogue open and /dialogue change commands can open or switch scenes.

Do you need to create a custom entity?

No—not to make an ordinary custom NPC using the built-in editor. A custom Bedrock entity is a separate development task. Microsoft’s custom entity tutorial says it requires both a behavior pack for server-side behavior and a resource pack for appearance, and recommends familiarity with JSON and a code editor.

Does the built-in NPC editor work in Java Edition?

No. The official workflows cited here cover Bedrock Edition and Minecraft Education, not Java Edition. Minecraft’s creator article describes NPCs as outside base vanilla gameplay; the reviewed official sources do not verify a current Java mod or other Java-specific workflow.
