No. Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a single-player game, not a two-player co-op campaign. Its optional online features did not let a friend join your story as a second player. Some editions offered asynchronous activities involving other players’ worlds, but what remains available depends on the platform and edition.
Does Shadow of War have co-op or local multiplayer?
No. You cannot play the campaign with a friend, either locally or online. The official PlayStation listing labels the PS4 game “1 player,” and Steam identifies its version as single-player. The game’s optional online designation refers to separate online features, not a second player joining Talion.

What did the online features do?
In the original game, online play meant asynchronous activities rather than real-time co-op: you could engage with elements of another player’s world without sharing their campaign session.
Online Vendettas
Vendettas let you pursue a target captain in another player’s world. Monolith’s April 2, 2018 update announcement describes Online Vendettas as one of the activities for recruiting Orcs and earning loot chests. Official patch notes also document captains recruited during Online Vendettas being added to the Garrison.

Online Conquests
Conquests let you attack another player’s fortress, using your recruited Orcs. Monolith’s update announcement describes Online Conquests as another way to recruit Orcs and earn loot chests; its patch notes document the Garrison receiving captains recruited during Ranked Conquests. Neither activity made the story a shared, two-player campaign.

No single platform-wide answer is supported by the official listings here. Nintendo UK’s current Switch 2 Definitive Edition listing says Online Conquests, Vendettas, Fight Pits, Chests, and Training Orders are no longer available in that edition. It also says the Garrison works offline, so you can move undeployed Orc followers between regions without an internet connection.

That Switch 2 notice does not establish the current status of services on PC, PS4, or Xbox. If you want a particular online activity, check the current store listing and in-game online options for your own platform and edition. The PlayStation listing describes online play as optional, and Nintendo specifically identifies offline Garrison functionality, but these details should not be taken to mean that every edition has the same features.

- Want to play the story with a friend? No version identified here offers two-player campaign co-op.
- Interested in asynchronous modes? Check whether the specific activity is supported on your platform and edition; the Switch 2 Definitive Edition listing says several are unavailable.
- Want to manage your Orcs offline? Nintendo says the Switch 2 Definitive Edition’s Garrison can be used offline.
