Short answer: what you receive in Total War: SHOGUN 2 now depends on your storefront and whether you already own the original game. The Complete Edition launches on October 13, 2026. A new Steam purchase includes the Complete Edition, the original SHOGUN 2 and associated legacy DLC except the Blood Pack; Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG purchases include the Complete Edition only. Existing owners keep their original game, receive legacy DLC they do not already own at no cost, and are eligible for a time-limited 75% loyalty discount on the upgrade, according to SEGA.
What is Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition?
Total War: SHOGUN 2 combines a turn-based campaign map with real-time land and naval battles. The Steam listing describes campaign management, general and agent skills, multi-stage sieges, hero units and a rotating 3D campaign map. Those are publisher and store-listing descriptions rather than independent performance or quality tests.

The Complete Edition is the 2026 release that SEGA says launches on October 13, 2026 for Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. The important practical distinction is that “Complete Edition” does not mean the same bundle on every storefront. Steam buyers receive an additional legacy copy and associated DLC; the other listed PC storefronts receive Complete Edition only.
Storefront contents at a glance
| Where you buy | What SEGA says is included | What that means for a new buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Complete Edition plus the original SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC, except the Blood Pack | You receive both the new edition and the legacy game in one purchase. |
| Epic Games Store | Complete Edition | The original-game entitlement is not listed as part of this bundle. |
| Microsoft Store | Complete Edition | The original-game entitlement is not listed as part of this bundle. |
| GOG | Complete Edition | The original-game entitlement is not listed as part of this bundle. |
SEGA also says standalone Steam sales of the original game stopped on September 28, 2026. The original remains playable for existing owners and is included for new Steam buyers through the Complete Edition. Store listings and account entitlements can change, so check the product page attached to your account before paying.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from 9 different clans and compete online and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation
- Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
- Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
Should an existing owner buy the Complete Edition?
If you already own the original SHOGUN 2 on Steam, your situation differs from that of a new customer. SEGA says existing owners retain the legacy game, receive legacy DLC they do not already own at no additional cost, and qualify for a time-limited 75% loyalty discount when upgrading to Complete Edition.
The discount is an eligibility benefit, not a guarantee that every account will show the same checkout result indefinitely. Sign in to the storefront account that owns the original game, open the Complete Edition product page and verify the displayed entitlement and price before purchasing. Do not buy a second copy of the original merely to obtain the upgrade.
Ownership decisions
- You own the original on Steam and want the new edition: check for the loyalty offer and confirm which legacy DLC is already attached to your account.
- You own only a non-Steam version: do not assume the Steam loyalty entitlement applies; the official eligibility statement specifically describes existing owners in the Steam context.
- You are buying for the first time: choose the storefront according to whether you need the original game and its legacy DLC, or only Complete Edition.
What DLC exists, and how is it accessed?
Feral’s legacy Steam/Linux FAQ lists these SHOGUN 2 DLC packs:

- Dragon War Battle Pack
- Hattori Clan Pack
- Ikko Ikki Clan Pack
- Otomo Clan Pack
- Rise of the Samurai Campaign
- Saints and Heroes
- Sengoku Jidai
Those are legacy-game details. They should not be treated as a complete list of what a particular Complete Edition storefront purchase contains, because SEGA’s 2026 bundle rules differ by platform and specifically exclude the Blood Pack from the Steam bundle.
Rank #2
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Automatic activation and the two exceptions
For the legacy game, Feral says most purchased DLC is enabled automatically. Two pieces of behavior are easy to miss:
- Blood effects: open the game’s Options menu and enable the Blood Effects checkbox. Owning the Blood Pack does not mean the effects are necessarily displayed until that setting is turned on.
- Rise of the Samurai: start it from its separate campaign selection rather than looking for it as a faction or map inside the standard campaign menu.
If a DLC item is missing, first confirm that you are launching the edition for which you bought it and that the same storefront account owns the entitlement. A legacy DLC entitlement is not evidence that a corresponding Complete Edition feature is present.
How do the campaigns and battles work?
The core loop alternates between strategic turns and real-time engagements. On the campaign map you manage territory and armies, develop generals and agents, and make decisions that determine where battles occur. When armies meet, you can fight a real-time land battle; the store description also includes naval battles, sieges with multiple stages and specialized hero units.

DLC campaigns such as Rise of the Samurai use their own campaign entry point in the legacy interface.

How to start a Steam multiplayer campaign
Feral’s Steam instructions describe a two-player campaign workflow. Use this sequence when both players are using the same supported Steam edition and can see one another through Steam:
- Open Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Select Multiplayer Campaign.
- Choose Host Campaign.
- Set the campaign options, then start the lobby. The host can optionally invite a Steam friend.
- The second player opens the multiplayer campaign list, selects the advertised session and joins.
- Begin the campaign after both players appear in the lobby and have accepted the selected settings.
Resuming a saved multiplayer campaign
Feral says the original participants must be present to resume a campaign, and the original host must resume it as host. If a different participant tries to host the save, the documented resume path may not be available. Keep the original host account involved when planning a continuing campaign.
Battle-resolution conflicts
Players can choose different battle-resolution options, but Feral states that the host’s Default Battle Resolution setting determines precedence. Set that option deliberately before beginning a long campaign so both players understand whether battles will be fought manually or resolved according to the host’s default.

Can Linux players use LAN or play with other platforms?
Feral’s Linux FAQ documents a local-network campaign path: one player hosts through the Local Network campaign list and the other joins from that list. It also states that Linux multiplayer is compatible only between Linux versions. That is an explicit operating-system limitation, not evidence of universal cross-platform support.
Rank #4
Do not assume a Linux installation can join a Windows or macOS campaign, or that a Steam session automatically provides cross-platform play. The official instructions explain how to create and join sessions but do not establish current player counts, matchmaking activity or connection reliability. Those conditions can change independently of the game’s menu options.
How do mods work in Complete Edition?
Complete Edition launches with integrated Mod.IO support. The critical compatibility rule from SEGA is that original SHOGUN 2 mods are not compatible with Complete Edition. Mods made for the original game remain unchanged for that original game; they do not become Complete Edition mods automatically.
Choose the edition before installing anything
- Playing original SHOGUN 2: continue using mods intended for the original game and its existing mod workflow.
- Playing Complete Edition: use the edition’s integrated Mod.IO support and only install content identified for Complete Edition.
- Switching editions: treat the mod setups as separate. Disable or remove legacy mod files before troubleshooting the other edition, and keep separate saves where possible.
The official material does not provide a maintained list of currently supported mod authors, individual projects or a universal compatibility matrix. A mod name found in an old guide is therefore not proof that it works with the 2026 edition.

The Steam listing gives these legacy storage figures:
Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
| Platform | Listed storage requirement |
|---|---|
| Windows | 32 GB |
| macOS | 24 GB |
| Linux | 26 GB |
These are the game’s legacy listed requirements, not a promise that every modern computer or operating-system release will run it correctly. The Steam Client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024, but that client policy does not replace the game’s own compatibility requirements. Check the current storefront listing for your edition, allow additional free space for updates and verify graphics-driver and operating-system support before installing.
Mac troubleshooting workflow
For an unresolved Mac problem, Feral asks users to collect the exact error message and a Total War SHOGUN 2 Report.txt file. Open the pre-game Options window, select the Support tab and use the available reporting instructions, then contact Feral with that information. This is a support escalation path, not a guaranteed repair; the report gives support staff the diagnostic context needed to investigate the failure.
Which edition and storefront fit your situation?
| Your priority | Most relevant choice | Check before checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Need the original game and legacy DLC in one new purchase | Steam Complete Edition | The Steam bundle includes the original and associated DLC except Blood Pack. |
| Already own original SHOGUN 2 on Steam | Check the loyalty upgrade offer | Confirm the time-limited 75% discount and any DLC entitlements on your account. |
| Want only the 2026 edition | Complete Edition on your preferred supported storefront | Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG listings are described as Complete Edition only. |
| Depend on an existing original-game mod setup | Keep using original SHOGUN 2 | Original mods are not compatible with Complete Edition. |
| Plan a Linux LAN campaign | Linux version with Linux participants | Feral documents Linux-to-Linux compatibility and Local Network hosting. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every storefront’s Complete Edition bundle contains the original game.
- Assuming the Steam bundle includes the Blood Pack; SEGA explicitly excludes it.
- Installing an original SHOGUN 2 mod into Complete Edition.
- Looking for Rise of the Samurai in the standard campaign list instead of its separate campaign menu.
- Expecting a resumed multiplayer save to work when the original host is absent.
- Treating legacy storage figures as a modern compatibility guarantee.
- Assuming Linux multiplayer works with Windows or macOS because all versions use Steam.
