What the PS5 Digital Edition actually is
Sony describes the Digital Edition as “an all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” In its original form, that means there is no slot for a game disc, Blu-ray movie or DVD. Games must be obtained digitally and downloaded to the console.
That description does not apply identically to every console sold as a “Digital Edition.” The newer slim hardware has a removable-drive design. Sony sells a separate accessory that can be attached to those systems, changing how they handle physical media. The model number on the console is therefore more important than the retail wording on the box.

Which PS5 models support the add-on Disc Drive?
Check the CFI model group before buying the accessory. Sony’s stated compatibility list distinguishes the newer slim consoles from the launch Digital Edition.

The CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 references identify slim model groups, not a storage-capacity or color variation. If a listing only says “PS5 Digital Edition” without a CFI number, ask the seller for the exact model group or check the console’s label and packaging before spending money on the drive.
The accessory you need: PS5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1
The compatible accessory is Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1. It is sold separately from a compatible Digital Edition Slim console. Attaching it supplies the physical-media hardware that the digital console lacks.
The drive is not a universal upgrade for every PlayStation 5. Its compatibility is tied to the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim designs and, according to Sony’s accessory listing, PS5 Pro. The launch CFI-1000 Digital Edition is absent from that list. Treat that omission as a compatibility limit rather than assuming the drive will fit or function because both products carry the PS5 name.
What you can play or watch after installing the drive
Physical PS5 games
With the drive attached, supported PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs can be used. This is the key upgrade for owners who buy boxed games, borrow discs or use the second-hand market. The disc must still be a supported PS5 game release; adding a drive does not turn every physical PlayStation title into a PS5 version.

Compatible PS4 game discs
Sony’s accessory manual also lists compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs. “Compatible” matters here: the drive reads the disc format, while game compatibility remains subject to the PS5’s supported PS4 software list. A PS4 disc that is not supported by the console will not become playable merely because the accessory is installed.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD movies
The accessory is not limited to games. Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray video media, Blu-ray video discs and DVDs among the supported formats. This gives a compatible Digital Edition Slim the same broad physical-video categories expected from a console equipped with a disc drive, subject to the normal format and region requirements of the media.

Sony’s accessory information states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Plan for an online connection when you first install the drive. The requirement is for pairing the accessory with the console during setup, so an otherwise offline installation should not be treated as a supported setup path.
Have the console connected to the internet before beginning. If you are buying a used console or setting up at a location without broadband access, arrange connectivity first; otherwise, you may have the physical hardware installed but be unable to complete the pairing step.
How to add the drive to a compatible Digital Edition
- Identify the model group. Confirm that the console is a CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Digital Edition Slim, or a PS5 Pro listed by Sony as compatible. Stop if it is the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition.
- Obtain the correct accessory. Buy the Sony CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive and verify that the seller identifies it by that model number. Do not substitute an unrelated optical drive.
- Prepare an internet connection. Connect the PS5 to the internet before setup because Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console.
- Attach the drive to the console. Follow the installation instructions supplied for your console and drive. The slim Digital Edition chassis is designed for this removable accessory; do not force a drive into a launch-model enclosure.
- Complete pairing during setup. With the drive attached and the console online, complete the on-screen setup process that pairs the accessory with the PS5.
- Test the media you intend to use. Insert a supported PS5 game disc, compatible PS4 game disc, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD. Testing one of your actual discs confirms that the installation and pairing succeeded before you rely on the drive for a purchase or trip.
The exact physical mounting procedure can vary with the console revision. Use the manual supplied with the CFI-ZDD1 and your console for the removal of covers and attachment details rather than forcing panels or connectors.

Digital Edition with a drive versus other buying options
The right choice depends on whether you need physical games and movies now, or want the option later.

Used, borrowed and resale games
A compatible drive lets you use the physical-game ecosystem: buying used copies, borrowing a disc from someone else, or reselling a game after you finish it. None of those options is available on a Digital Edition that remains drive-free.
Existing collections
If you already own PS5 or compatible PS4 discs, the accessory can prevent you from repurchasing those games digitally. Verify each title’s compatibility rather than assuming that every PS4 disc or every PlayStation-branded release will work.
Physical movie libraries
Owners of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD collections can use those discs once the compatible drive is installed. A console that remains purely digital cannot read that library.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the drive for a launch Digital Edition
The most consequential error is confusing the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition with a slim CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model. Sony’s current drive listing does not include the launch family. Check the model number first; if it is CFI-1000, do not present the CFI-ZDD1 as a supported upgrade.
Relying on a generic product description
Retail listings may shorten the name to “PS5 Digital” or “PS5 Slim.” Those labels are not enough to establish compatibility. Require the CFI group and the CFI-ZDD1 accessory model in the listing or confirm them with the seller.
Skipping the internet requirement
Installing the hardware without an internet connection can leave pairing incomplete. Connect the console before setup and complete Sony’s pairing process while online.
Assuming every PS4 disc works
The supported category is compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs, not an unrestricted promise for every PS4 title. Check the game’s PS5 backward-compatibility status when a particular disc matters.

The accessory reads physical media; it does not convert a digital purchase into a disc or create a digital license for a game you do not own. Use the disc formats Sony lists and sign in to the account that owns any separately purchased digital content.
