Yes, you can still play State of Decay 2 as of October 30, 2026, because Undead Labs has not shut down. On September 22, 2026, the studio announced that it had separated from Xbox and become an independent, employee-owned developer. It also said State of Decay 3 remains in development.
If Undead Labs were to close later, an installed and properly licensed copy might continue to run, especially in single-player, but no source promises permanent access. Steam requires internet for initial sign-in and a free Xbox Live account to play, while co-op relies on Xbox account and Xbox Live services. A future closure would therefore create uncertainty around authentication, downloads, licenses and multiplayer rather than automatically switching off every copy.

Is Undead Labs shutting down?
No. The studio’s September 22, 2026 announcement describes independence from Xbox, not closure. Undead Labs said it is now employee-owned and that development of State of Decay 3 continues.
Studio head Philip Holt wrote, “State of Decay exists because millions of players have made that choice over the years, and we’re dedicated to honoring their trust.” “Millions” is his broad characterization, not a precise current player count for State of Decay 2, but the announcement clearly presents an active studio rather than a shutdown.

That distinction matters because becoming independent can change ownership, staffing or support arrangements without taking an existing game offline.
Did State of Decay 2 stop receiving updates?
Undead Labs ended planned content development, not the game’s current availability. Update 38, announced on October 22, 2024, was described as the final content update. It permanently unlocked previously gated or seasonal items. The studio’s support FAQ now calls October 2024 the final content update and says it is no longer accepting new bug reports directly; the wishlist is also closed.
The announcement said, “This is our final update for State of Decay 2, but this is not the end of the journey!” In context, that statement concerns development. It is not a promise that the game will remain downloadable, authenticated or playable forever, and it does not establish that no later hotfixes could exist.
Undead Labs later reflected on the game’s history in a November 27, 2024 Steam announcement, describing nearly 40 free updates across six years. That is a record of past support, not a commitment to future service operation.
Would a studio closure automatically disable the game?
Not necessarily. A closure would not by itself prove that an installed, licensed single-player copy stops launching. The practical result depends on the platform’s licensing checks, authentication design, installed files, account services and the hardware you use.

There is also no substantiated permanent-playability guarantee. The available information does not say that Xbox or Steam will preserve authentication, redownloads, ownership validation or multiplayer indefinitely if the studio disappears. Treat continued play after a hypothetical closure as conditional, not assured.

State of Decay 2 includes single-player, but the documented requirements do not support a blanket “works forever without internet” claim.
Single-player on PC
Steam lists an internet connection for initial sign-in and a free Xbox Live account to play. That means a freshly installed or newly authenticated copy may need network access before you can reach a solo game. The sources do not establish whether every later launch works completely offline on every PC configuration.
An installed or purchased copy
A properly licensed installation is the most relevant route if your concern is retaining solo access. Before relying on it, confirm that the game is installed, your platform account owns the license, required content has downloaded and your hardware still supports the title. Prior sign-in may help in some circumstances, but no platform-wide offline guarantee has been published.
What “offline” does not cover
Offline solo play, if a platform permits it, does not preserve online co-op, account services, cloud features or future downloads. A game can remain playable from local files while network-dependent functions fail.

Will State of Decay 2 multiplayer still work?
Only while the required account and Xbox services remain available. Undead Labs documents cross-play and co-op for the host plus up to three other players. The session uses peer-to-peer networking, but peer-to-peer describes how players connect to one another; it does not remove Xbox account sign-in or Xbox Live service dependencies.
For co-op, players need an Xbox account, Multiplayer enabled in the game’s settings and functioning Xbox Live services. If those services are retired or authentication changes after a future closure, co-op could stop even if a solo installation still launches.

If you buy a disc, verify the seller’s console compatibility, region, edition and condition separately. Installation and updating are separate steps, so a disc should not be treated as a complete substitute for platform services.

No. A disc can reduce dependence on a storefront remaining open for the initial purchase, and Undead Labs provides separate disc-reinstallation instructions, but it cannot preserve Xbox account authentication, online co-op, patches or compatibility with future hardware.

Physical ownership is therefore useful for access planning, not proof of permanent playability. The same distinction applies to a digital purchase: owning a license is different from having a guaranteed future authentication or download service.
How should you prepare while the game is available?
Preparation cannot guarantee access after a hypothetical closure, but it can remove avoidable problems now.
- Install the game and required content. Confirm that the complete installation finishes on the PC or Xbox you intend to use.
- Launch while services are operating. Sign in with the platform account tied to your license and verify that a solo save opens.
- Record your account and edition details. Keep the account credentials, platform, region and edition information needed to identify the license or disc later.
- Test co-op separately. Enable Multiplayer, sign in to the Xbox account used by each player and confirm that the service can create or join a session.
- Keep realistic expectations. Local files may preserve solo play, but there is no published guarantee covering authentication, redownloads, cloud functions or multiplayer after a studio or platform-service change.
What should you check if co-op stops working?
An individual connection or launch failure is not evidence that Undead Labs has closed. The support FAQ’s current checks are:

- On PC, check for Gaming Services updates in addition to normal Windows, game and driver updates.
- On Xbox, follow the FAQ’s platform-specific launch steps; if you use a disc, use its separate disc-reinstallation path rather than assuming the studio has shut down.
These steps address present account, service and installation problems. They cannot restore a service that a platform has permanently retired.
What remains unknown about a future closure?
No published statement establishes how Xbox or Steam would handle authentication, ownership checks, downloads, updates or multiplayer if Undead Labs eventually ceased operating. The sources also do not promise that every platform will support account-free offline launches.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: State of Decay 2 remains available now; its final content update did not turn it off; solo play may outlast a studio closure on some installations; and online functions require services that could change independently of the local game files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I redownload State of Decay 2 if Undead Labs closes?
There is no published promise covering future redownloads. Redownloading would depend on the platform storefront, your ownership record and whatever authentication services remain available at that time.
Does Update 38 mean State of Decay 2 servers are already offline?
