You need to own and install the Synth Riders base game on the same platform or storefront where you intend to play, then buy the music pack or other DLC there.
A headset and controllers provide the required VR hardware, but they do not include the game’s software license or any DLC entitlement.

What the Synth Riders purchase actually contains
The base game is the playable application. DLC supplies additional songs and experiences that are attached to that application. Buying an add-on does not give you a separate copy of the game that can launch on its own.
The official PlayStation Store listing distinguishes the two products clearly. It labels the main product “Base Game Including 81 Songs.” Individual music packs, including the Linkin Park and Lady Gaga packs, are listed separately as “Add-On Pack.” The listing also describes “22 optional DLCs adding 8 visually stunning Experiences™ & 127 songs.” Those figures describe the content offered in addition to the base product at the time the listing was checked, not a promise that every platform will always display identical totals.

Steam uses the same basic structure. Its Synth Riders page identifies the title as “VR Only” and provides an “Add all DLC to Cart” option on the game listing. That cart option groups add-ons with the game; it does not turn the add-ons into an independent application.

The PlayStation counts and labels above come from the official listing checked on October 19, 2026. DLC catalogs, names and totals can change, so read the current page for the exact pack you are considering.
Why a DLC track cannot be played alone
A DLC purchase normally grants content data and a license flag for an existing game. The base application supplies the menus, game engine, scoring systems, tracking, settings and other software needed to load that content. The music pack does not replace those components.

That is why a store can show a song pack as a product you can purchase while still requiring the base title. The store is selling an add-on entitlement, not a second executable. Selecting a DLC page, downloading its files or seeing the pack in your library does not remove the base-game requirement.
This distinction also explains why owning the correct hardware is not enough. A compatible VR headset and controllers let the application run, but the hardware does not grant a Synth Riders license and cannot unlock a song pack purchased without the game.

How to buy and install the content on PlayStation
Use the PlayStation storefront for the console and account on which you will play. The wording and menu placement can change with storefront updates, but the entitlement sequence remains the same.
- Open the Synth Riders product page. Confirm that you are viewing the base game rather than an individual add-on. The listing identifies the base product as “Base Game Including 81 Songs.”
- Purchase the base game. Complete the transaction with the PlayStation account that will use the game. A headset by itself does not substitute for this purchase.
- Download and install the base application. The DLC has nothing to launch until this application is installed on the compatible PlayStation system and connected VR setup.
- Choose the desired add-on. On the same storefront, select a music pack or other item marked “Add-On Pack.” Check its description and platform designation before buying.
- Download the add-on. Install the purchased pack after, or alongside, the base game according to the console’s download queue.
- Launch Synth Riders and look for the added content. The songs should appear within the game’s own music selection or the relevant Experience area once the base game recognizes the installed entitlement.
Buying only the item marked “Add-On Pack” leaves you with DLC ownership but no playable base application. Buying the base game on one PlayStation account and the add-on on a different account can also create an entitlement mismatch; use the account and platform arrangement supported by the current PlayStation license terms.

Steam presents Synth Riders as a “VR Only” game. You need the Steam game entitlement, a compatible VR setup and the DLC entitlements you want.
- Open the Synth Riders store page in Steam. Verify that the item is the game, not merely one of the downloadable additions.
- Buy the base game and add it to your Steam library. The base title is the application that Steam launches.
- Purchase individual DLC or use “Add all DLC to Cart.” The latter is a convenience for adding the available add-ons to one cart; it does not make the DLC a standalone title.
- Install Synth Riders. Install the base game through your Steam library before expecting a music pack to be usable.
- Install the selected DLC. Steam may manage the add-on automatically after purchase, or it may expose it as downloadable content in the game’s properties. Follow the current client prompt.
- Start the game in the compatible VR environment. The purchased songs and Experiences are accessed from inside Synth Riders, not from a separate DLC shortcut.
Steam and PlayStation are separate storefronts. A purchase made on one should not be assumed to transfer to the other unless the platform listing explicitly states that it does. The safest approach is to buy the base game and each add-on in the storefront tied to the headset and account you will actually use.
Common purchase situations
“Can I buy Synth Riders songs without buying the game?”
You can usually place an individual music pack in a storefront cart without already owning the base game, because stores sell add-ons separately. That does not mean the songs are playable without the base title. You still need the Synth Riders game entitlement and installation on the same supported platform.

“Do I need the base game for Synth Riders DLC?”
Yes. The base game is the application to which the DLC is attached. The PlayStation “Add-On Pack” labels and Steam’s combined game-and-DLC cart presentation both reflect that dependency.
“Can I play the music packs by themselves?”
No. A pack is loaded from within Synth Riders. It is not an independent VR game, media player or song file that can be opened separately.
“Is Synth Riders DLC standalone?”
No. The downloadable content is additional material for the base game. The store may give each pack its own product page and download entry, but those are catalog and licensing conveniences rather than standalone software.
Storefront, headset and account compatibility
Three separate requirements are easy to confuse:
- Hardware: You need compatible VR hardware for the platform. The official Steam listing calls the game “VR Only,” and the PlayStation listing likewise assumes a compatible VR setup.
- Base-game software: You need the Synth Riders application installed on that platform.
- DLC entitlement: You need a license for the particular pack, obtained through the storefront that serves your platform and account.
Satisfying only one or two of these requirements is insufficient. A headset without the game has no application to run. The base game without a purchased pack cannot unlock that pack’s songs. A DLC entitlement on a different storefront may not be recognized by the platform on which you are playing.
Before purchasing, check the store page’s platform designation, account currently signed in, edition and add-on status. Treat cross-platform or cross-store ownership as unavailable unless the listing explicitly promises it. This avoids paying for a pack that is attached to an account or platform you do not use.

What to check when purchased DLC is missing
If a pack does not appear after purchase, work through the entitlement chain instead of buying it again.
- Confirm the transaction account. Check that the account signed in to the console or Steam client is the one that completed the purchase.
- Confirm the storefront. A PlayStation purchase and a Steam purchase are separate licenses. Verify that the pack was bought in the storefront for the system on which you launched the game.
- Confirm the base game is installed. DLC files cannot provide the missing Synth Riders application.
- Confirm the add-on is installed. A completed purchase can still be waiting in the platform’s download queue or content-management screen.
- Read the pack’s current product description. Make sure you bought the intended song pack rather than a similarly named item, bundle component or different edition.
- Restart the game after installation. Closing and reopening the base application gives it a chance to refresh its installed-content list.
- Use the platform’s official support process if the license is still absent. Keep the transaction record and the exact account and platform details available. Do not assume that buying the DLC a second time will solve an account or storefront mismatch.
These checks address ownership and installation. They do not change the fundamental requirement that the base game must be present.

- Buying only the base game gives access to the listed 81-song starting catalog.
- Buying selected packs adds only the songs and Experiences named by those packs.
- Buying every available add-on is a larger purchase than buying the game, because the DLC catalog is separate and cumulative.
The numbers are catalog information, not a guarantee about future releases, removals, regional availability or a different storefront’s presentation. Steam may display a different current total or grouping. Always use the live product page for the pack list and availability relevant to your account.

Practical buying decisions
If you are new to Synth Riders
Start with the base game. It supplies the playable application and the 81 songs shown on the PlayStation listing. After you have confirmed that your VR hardware and platform run the game correctly, choose only the music packs whose artists or songs you want.

If you already own the base game
You do not need to buy another copy of the game for each pack. Purchase the desired add-on through the same supported storefront and account, then install it into the existing application.
If you own a pack but not the game
The pack is not wasted as a license, but it is not usable until you obtain and install the base game on the matching platform. Check the storefront’s current compatibility and account rules before completing the base-game purchase.
If you are choosing between platforms
Decide first where you will actually play. Then buy both the base game and DLC in that platform’s store unless the listing expressly documents a cross-platform entitlement. Hardware compatibility and software ownership are separate decisions.
