How do I submit the Xbox refund request?
Have the Microsoft account, the game title, and the order details available. Then complete the form in this order:
- Open the official Microsoft refund page. Follow the link above in a browser and sign in.
- Find the purchase. Review the displayed order list and select the digital Xbox game that disappointed you. Confirm that the edition and purchase date are the one you intend to return.
- Select Request a refund. The control appears on the item when Microsoft’s system offers the request route.
- Choose the real reason. Microsoft asks why you want the refund. Describe the actual problem, such as the game not meeting your expectations, a feature not working as advertised, or an accidental purchase. Do not claim a technical defect that did not happen.
- Select Next. Review the information shown by the form and make sure the explanation matches the purchase.

What should I write as the reason for disappointment?
Be specific without exaggerating. A short explanation that identifies what went wrong is more useful than a generic complaint, and it keeps the submission accurate.
- Expectation mismatch: Explain that the game differed materially from the description or features you understood when buying it.
- Accidental purchase: Say that the purchase was made unintentionally and identify the order if the form asks for more detail.

How long does an Xbox game refund take?
There are two separate waits, and confusing them is a common source of frustration.
Microsoft’s review of the request
Microsoft Support says a submitted request may take up to 72 hours to process. That is a processing estimate, not a guaranteed approval deadline and not the time required for money to appear in your bank account. Check the Refund status tab and watch the email address associated with the purchasing account.
Posting the approved refund
For a qualifying refund that Microsoft has issued, the September 2026 Terms of Sale state a typical timing of approximately 3–5 business days. Your card issuer, bank, or other payment provider can take additional days to post the credit. A status showing that Microsoft issued the refund therefore may appear before the balance changes on the payment account.

- Confirm that the refund status says the credit was issued rather than still under review.
- Check the original payment method, not only a different card or a current account balance.
- Allow for weekends, bank holidays, and the payment provider’s own posting schedule.
- Keep the Microsoft email and order details available if you need to contact support or the payment provider.
Why can’t I see “Request a refund”?
The missing control does not by itself explain the outcome. Work through these checks before submitting a different kind of request.
- Verify the account. Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that paid for the game. A console can have several profiles, while the purchase belongs to only one account.

Start from Microsoft’s returns and refund support guidance and select the physical-product instructions for your location. If online returns are unavailable in your market, Microsoft points customers to Sales support. Packaging, proof of purchase, and any regional exceptions are determined by that physical-return process.
What if the game came from another retailer?
The seller that charged you controls the transaction. Microsoft’s digital refund form cannot reverse a purchase made through a different store, even if the game runs on an Xbox console. Check the receipt or bank statement to identify the merchant, then follow that merchant’s refund policy and support route.
Do not ask Microsoft to refund a third-party order and do not describe the purchase as a Microsoft Store transaction if it was not one. Providing the wrong seller can delay the response because Microsoft cannot access another retailer’s order record.
