Yes. Current MW4 DMZ guides do not describe an enemy-proximity lock that hides or disables the tank’s Repair Engine interaction. Nearby AI or operators therefore do not, by themselves, make the prompt unavailable. They do make the repair extremely dangerous: the Tank Depot can contain Lieutenant Bale and elite guards, and a tank at a Gas Station must sit still and advertise your position.
There are two separate jobs. You first rebuild the wrecked tank in Chang-san Air Base’s Tank Depot by installing four specific parts. After it is running, damage and fuel are handled automatically at Gas Stations. The roaming Tank Commander (also called the NK Battle Tank) is a boss and cannot be rebuilt with those parts.

Players use “repair” for two different systems. Mixing them up is the main reason a prompt appears to be missing.

The four-part rebuild is a mission-gated objective, not the same interaction as ordinary vehicle servicing. Once the tank is alive, it behaves like a vehicle with finite armor and fuel. Activision’s general DMZ guidance says vehicles are repaired and refueled at Gas Stations; the Air Base tank was documented after launch as a special, mission-linked vehicle rather than a normal map spawn.

Can enemies nearby disable the Repair Engine prompt?
No such lock is documented. Detailed guides attribute a missing prompt to an incomplete Armory route, missing components, or interacting with the wrong tank—not to an enemy standing in the room. The mode does contain other proximity restrictions: for example, the Possum trait cannot be activated while the squad that killed you is nearby, or until four minutes have elapsed. No current source applies that rule to tank repair.
That is a mechanical answer, not a recommendation to repair in the open. DMZTracker reports Lieutenant Bale and an elite guard in the Tank Depot. The official Hajin briefing describes Chang-san Air Base as a heavily fortified complex with numerous guards and high-value targets. Clear the room and check the approaches before you kneel at the rear of an immobile vehicle.
How do I rebuild the Air Base tank?
You need access to Operation Iron Citadel, the four parts in the same deployment inventory, and a safe route to the Tank Depot. Parts can be collected over several deployments, but only items you bring into the current raid count for that repair interaction.
Unlock the mission and Armory route
- Complete the three tier 1 Story Missions—Critical Extraction, Silent Ledger and Shopping Hacks. Operation Iron Citadel is a tier 2 mission locked behind them.
- Select Operation Iron Citadel before deploying. The mission sends you to Chang-san Air Base and its Armory objective. Youxia/Ali213’s 26 October 2026 guide places the tank objective after the mission has progressed to planting explosives on an aircraft.
- Obtain an upgraded Air Base Access Card or Multi-Use Air Base Hangar Key Card. The Armory vault also requires a six-digit code assembled from three “Transfer Slip – Do Not File” notes. The code changes between matches, so do not copy a code from an earlier raid.
- Enter the Armory. A Colossus is reported behind the vault door. On the ground floor, turn right toward the Tank Depot; the wreck is at the back of the room.

Gamer.org, DETONATED, Gfinity, Gaming ProMax, Fanboydestroy and DMZTracker all describe four required components. Spawns are randomized and the components are loose, so a failed exfil can erase a set unless you protect it. DMZTracker recommends placing collected parts in a Secure Slot when extracting. Items left in Stash storage do not satisfy the prompt until they are carried into the repair deployment.

Install the parts
- Clear Lieutenant Bale, the elite guard and other AI in the Tank Depot. Have a squad member hold the doorway and likely sightlines; a solo player should take the extra time to remove every nearby threat.
- Stand at the rear of the wrecked tank and look for Repair Engine. If it is absent, verify the vehicle, the four components and your Armory/mission progress before blaming enemy proximity.
- Use the interaction and install all four parts. Wait for the on-screen Vehicle Repaired confirmation.
- Open the Hangar doors and drive out. The tank is loud and draws attention, so expect rival squads to investigate the Air Base or follow your route.
One TechnoSports article describes a repair tool, progress indicator and breaking off when shot. The detailed four-part guides instead describe the rear-of-tank installation above. Treat a progress-bar repair tool as generic or possibly mixed with another vehicle/tyre interaction; do not bring a named tool unless that exact prompt appears in your build.
Can I fix the tank under fire?
The prompt is not documented as being cancelled merely because an enemy is nearby or shooting. However, no source establishes a repair-channel duration, an interruption flag or a safe damage threshold. If bullets start flying, survival takes priority: leave the interaction, get behind cover, eliminate the threat and return. TechnoSports’ practical warning is apt: “A half-fixed tank stays half-fixed; your health doesn’t.”

For the initial rebuild, the best interpretation is clear-then-repair. The tank cannot move while you are installing parts, and the Depot’s confined room gives AI or an opposing squad easy angles. For a squad, one player can search or interact while one or two watch entrances. A solo operator should not assume that a still-valid prompt means the room is safe.
How do I repair and refuel the running tank?
Drive to a Gas Station, place the tank under the canopy near the pumps and keep it stationary until the automatic service completes. Activision’s 5 October 2026 DMZ deep dive states that vehicles have finite armor and fuel and are repaired and refueled at Gas Stations; it also notes that Gas Stations can refill carried Gas Cans.

- Approach from an angle that gives you an exit rather than stopping broadside in the open.
- Center the tank beneath the canopy and close to the pumps. The service is automatic; there is no four-part installation at this stage.
- Keep a teammate outside as lookout, especially for RPG-8 or JOKR fire. Gaming ProMax warns that a stationary tank at a Gas Station is an easy target.
- Leave as soon as the tank is serviced. Do not turn a repair stop into a prolonged fight.
Gfinity (28 October 2026) and DETONATED (26 October 2026) report that carried Gas Canisters do not service the Air Base tank. Gas Canisters can be refilled at a Gas Station for other uses, but they are not a confirmed replacement for parking this tank at the pumps.
Do I have to clear the Air Base or Tank Depot first?
You do not have to clear the entire Air Base map. You should clear the Tank Depot and establish a defensible route through the Armory before starting the rebuild. AI outside the room can still hear the engine once you leave, and an opposing squad may arrive because the area is loud and mission valuable.
- Inside the Depot: remove Bale, elite guards and remaining AI before interacting.
- Armory approach: check corners and the vault route; a missing key, code or mission step is a more likely prompt failure than nearby enemies.
- Exit: open the Hangar doors before committing to the drive and identify cover or a fallback Gas Station.
- After departure: keep moving when launchers are likely; parking is reserved for a short, covered service stop.
Which tank can be repaired with the four parts?
Only the wrecked player tank in the Air Base Tank Depot uses the four tank components. Several Hajin vehicles and bosses look similar in guides, but their mechanics are different.

The player tank’s cannon is reported to one-shot most ordinary vehicles but performs poorly against other tanks. Do not drive toward the roaming NK Battle Tank expecting the Depot interaction to appear.

Does the tank stay yours after extraction?
Current guides treat the rebuilt tank as a same-match asset. Gamer.org and TechnoSports describe no confirmed permanent unlock, while DMZTracker still lists post-extraction persistence as unresolved as of 27 October 2026. Parts can be stashed across extractions; the running vehicle itself should not be planned as an account-wide reward.

- Missing part: check that all four named tank components are in the current backpack, not merely in Stash.
- Mission state: confirm Operation Iron Citadel is active and that its Armory/aircraft objectives have been advanced far enough.
- Access failure: verify the upgraded access card and the current match’s six-digit Armory code from the three notes.
- Position: move to the back of the tank and aim at the interaction point; the guides place the prompt there.
- Combat pressure: if the prompt appeared and gunfire began, disengage to cover and return after the room is secure. No published guide supplies a measured enemy radius or a guaranteed interruption rule.
What is the safest plan for a squad?
A two- or three-player squad should divide jobs: one operator carries or installs the parts while the others guard the Tank Depot, Armory route and Hangar exit. In the field, designate a Gas Station lookout and keep an escape direction open before parking. A solo run is possible if the room is cleared, but it has no one to watch launchers while the tank is stationary.
Use the tank as a mobility asset after the rebuild, not as a reason to remain at the Air Base. Its noise can attract third parties, and no published source establishes its fuel-burn rate, launcher time-to-kill or a permanent ownership system. Those unknowns are reasons to leave exposed positions quickly, not evidence that the repair prompt is disabled near enemies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Repair Engine prompt appear if AI is in the room?
Current guides do not report AI presence as a condition that hides the prompt. The interaction can still be a bad tactical choice because Tank Depot guards, including a possible Lieutenant Bale encounter, can kill you while you are stationary.
Can I repair the tank at a Gas Station while another squad attacks?
The tank must remain under the canopy and near the pumps for automatic service, so an attack can force you to abandon the stop. Pull away, use cover or fight first, then return; there is no published safe-distance or invulnerability rule for Gas Station servicing.
Do Gas Canisters work on the Air Base tank?
Reports from Gfinity and DETONATED say they do not. Carrying a canister is not a substitute for taking the rebuilt tank to a Gas Station for automatic repair and refueling.
How many seats does the repaired tank have?
Gamer.org, Fanboydestroy and DMZTracker, citing Game Rant, report two player seats. Plan your guard and driver roles around that capacity rather than expecting a full squad to ride inside.
Is the roaming NK Battle Tank the same vehicle as the repaired tank?
No. The NK Battle Tank is a roaming Commander boss and is not repaired with the four Depot parts. The repairable vehicle is the wreck found inside Chang-san Air Base’s Tank Depot.
