No—not through a rollback method documented in Sony’s published PS5 or PS4 support instructions. Sony explains how to update or reinstall system software, but reinstalling is not a way to return to an older version. It deletes console data, so don’t choose it as a downgrade attempt.
Update, reinstall and rollback are different
| Action | What it does | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Update | Installs system software through a Sony-supported process. | It is not a documented way to choose and restore a previous version. |
| Reinstall | Reinstalls system software through the console’s reset or initialize process. | Sony warns that reinstalling deletes console data. Back up what you can before proceeding. |
| Rollback or downgrade | Would return the console to an earlier software version. | Sony’s reviewed support instructions do not document a user rollback procedure. |
This answer is limited to Sony’s published support instructions; it does not establish that every conceivable unofficial method is impossible. Sony warns against update files from other sources or methods outside its documentation, which can impair console operation and affect warranty or repair-service eligibility.
What to do if an update fails or causes trouble
If an update is stuck or fails, use Sony’s supported troubleshooting rather than trying to install an older system version:
- Retry the download using the console’s system software update process.
- Try updating through Safe Mode.
- Use a manual update with the official file and instructions for your console.
For wider system problems, Sony’s Safe Mode guidance also covers options such as rebuilding the database or restoring default settings. Read the description of each option before selecting it: some troubleshooting or reset choices erase data. Back up your console where possible before taking a destructive step. If the supported update or Safe Mode steps do not resolve the issue, use Sony’s repair support.

Manual USB updates are not downgrades
A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT can be used for Sony’s manual update or reinstallation process. It does not make a rollback possible. Follow the instructions for the correct console, use the official file, and create the required folders and filename exactly:
- PS5 update file:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP - PS4 update file:
PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP
Reinstallation uses a separate reinstallation file and a Safe Mode reset or initialize option—not the ordinary update file. Sony states that reinstalling deletes all data on the console. Check Sony’s current instructions before starting, and do not proceed unless you understand the data-loss consequences.
