Yes, a Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card can be handed to another person to use. Nintendo says it works on any system, but the new system must download the game data and the card must be inserted whenever the game is played. Resale is a practical possibility because the card is physical and system-independent; Nintendo’s official materials explain how it works but do not expressly confirm resale rights.
What a game-key card contains—and what it does not
A game-key card is a physical card that stores the key needed to start a game, not the full game data. On the first play on each system, that system downloads the game data over the internet. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ says a Nintendo Account is not required for that download.
The card remains necessary after the download: it must be inserted whenever the game is played. Nintendo also says subsequent gameplay does not require an internet connection, although a particular game may require connectivity for its own online features. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa’s 2025 shareholder Q&A answer describes the card’s function and these play requirements.
What happens when you lend or pass on the card?
Nintendo says a game-key card can be used on any system. In practice, you can lend the card or hand it to another person; they need to download the game data onto their own system and keep the card inserted to play. Each system needs an internet connection for its first download and enough storage for the data. Nintendo says the required space is shown on the game’s packaging, and the data can be stored in internal storage or on a microSD Express card.

Save data is stored in the system’s internal storage, not on the game-key card. Passing on the card therefore does not transfer your save data.
Does Nintendo allow you to resell a game-key card?
Nintendo’s official FAQ and shareholder Q&A explain that the physical card works on any system, but they do not expressly state a resale policy, guarantee resale rights, or set out a legal rule for secondhand transfers. The practical point is that the card can be handed to someone else for use under the same download and insertion requirements. Treat that as an inference from how the card works, not as an explicit Nintendo authorization or a universal legal conclusion.

How this differs from lending a virtual game card
A virtual game card is a Nintendo Account-managed digital game or DLC purchase, not a physical game-key card. Nintendo supports lending virtual game cards to members of a family group under specific rules. Those rules do not govern handing over a physical game-key card.

Before handing over a game-key card
- Make sure the recipient can connect to the internet for the first download on their system.
- Check that the system has enough internal or microSD Express storage for the game data; the packaging lists the required space.
- Keep the card available whenever the game is played.
- Remember that save data stays in the system’s internal storage rather than moving with the card.
