Square Enix ended online service for the combined KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ Dark Road app on June 30, 2021 UTC, then converted it for offline play. The two games did not become equivalent offline: Union χ became a story-viewing mode with mini-games, while Dark Road later received its story and battles. Square Enix warned that uninstalling the app deletes its data; whether Apple or Google currently offers it for download or redownload is not established by the official sources cited here.
What happened to Unchained χ, Union χ, and Dark Road?
These names refer to successive versions or stages of the same app. Square Enix’s official archive records that it began as Unchained χ, was renamed Union χ in 2017, and became Union χ Dark Road in 2020. The publisher announced the service closure in February 2021 and later set the end date as June 29, 2021 PDT, which was June 30, 2021 UTC. Square Enix’s service notice explains the closure and planned offline transition; its series history archive records the app’s name and service changes.

Can you still play the games offline?
The offline app preserved different things from each game. The distinction matters if you are looking for playable quests rather than a way to revisit the story.
| Mode | What the offline app included | What was not retained |
|---|---|---|
| Union χ | Theater viewing, avatar customization, records, and five Classic Kingdom mini-games. | Story quests and other playable sections were no longer available. |
| Dark Road | Its later offline version included the main quest, battles, world battle, albums, shop, and crafting. | Dark Road was initially unplayable in version 4.4.0; Square Enix said gameplay was planned for version 5.0.0. |
Square Enix’s service notice describes the initial transition, including Union χ’s theater mode and Dark Road’s planned return to gameplay. The publisher’s later offline-version notice lists Dark Road’s retained features.

Square Enix warned that uninstalling the app would delete all of its data. The publisher did not describe a way to restore that local data after deletion, so do not uninstall it if you want to preserve an existing installation and its contents. The offline version was free to download and install, and in-app purchases were no longer available, according to the publisher’s offline-version notice.

Current Apple and Google download or redownload availability is unverified here, and may depend on region or account history. The official pages cited above do not establish that either store currently offers the app, so it would be unsafe to assume it can be newly installed or recovered from a purchase history.
